Super Frost Moon Lights Up the Sky This Weekend

Send us your photos of the Super Frost Moon HERE

It's a Supermoon weekend!

The moon is almost full Saturday night and will be full Sunday. At that same time, the moon will make its closest approach to the Earth -- the definition of a supermoon.

That combination will make the moon seem about 14 percent larger in diameter than usual this weekend, NASA said. Supermoons typically appear about 30 percent brighter than the usual moon.

And this will be a particularly bright supermoon for the United States, thanks to the more intense sunlight that reflects off the moon in winter, NASA said.

As if that weren't enough: This supermoon, the only one visible in 2017, is also a Super Frost Moon.

This last full moon of the year is known as a Frost Moon, Cold Moon or Moon Before Yule. It doesn't always correspond with a supermoon (though it did in December 2016).

In other words: Don't miss it.

You can see the Super Frost Moon any night this weekend; conditions in most of the country should be favorable for viewing, though there may be clouds in the far northeast and in the central parts of the country. (If that happens to you, check out this Virtual Telescope for some gorgeous pictures from elsewhere.)

And even though the moon isn't completely full until Sunday, viewers won't notice a difference on Saturday night.

The best time to see it will be as the moon rises just after sunset, according to National Geographic.

And if you want to snap a picture on your smartphone, don't zoom in using your camera app, advises a National Geographic photographer. (Read their tips for taking pictures of a supermoon here.)

Two other tips? National Geographic suggests putting the phone down. "Supermoons aren’t rare, but they’re not an everyday occurrence either. Don’t be so focused on your sensor that you miss such an otherworldly sight," they said.

And NASA, which apparently has a sense of humor, suggests dressing for the occasion. "As usual, the wearing of suitably celebratory celestial attire is encouraged in honor of the full Moon."

Teacher, 28, Arrested for Having Sex with NJ Student

A 28-year-old teacher was arrested Friday on charges that she had sex with a 16-year-old South Jersey student.

Alyssia Marie Reddy had taught English at the Pennington School, a day and boarding school in Pennington, New Jersey, a police report shows.

In December 2016, Reddy gave the student her cell phone number and then added him on Snapchat, according to the police records. The student said in February 2017 he received messages from Reddy saying, "I want your hands on me."

About three weeks after that, Reddy picked up the student from a friend's house in Solebury, Pennsylvania, drove him to a nearby park and had sex with him, according to the police report.

Police received the first report of the incident on November 20. In a statement to parents, the school said they had reported the case to prosecutors after being made aware of it.

The school said it is cooperating with law enforcement, and that the head of the school plans to meet with students Monday.

Reddy had since left the school and moved to Maryland. A Baltimore television station reported that Reddy had been teaching at the St. Paul School for Girls near Baltimore, and that she had been fired.

She was arrested by the Baltimore County Fugitive Task Force, police said.

Reddy is charged with institutional sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor, criminal use of a communication facility and corruption of a minor.

Welcome to Pennsylvania, Tatu the Giraffe

Welcome to Pennsylvania, Tatu!

The Lehigh Valley Zoo announced Saturday that the 20-month-old giraffe had arrived at the zoo from the Greenville Zoo.

Tatu traveled in an "extra tall trailer," zoo officials said.

"Our Tatu is doing great, and is already bonding with the keepers over his favorite treats of kale and grain," the zoo said in a press release.

In May, a 6-year-old giraffe died at the zoo after it leaned into an adjoining staff and was injured by its father, Murphy. That young giraffe, named Ernie, suffered a blow to his neck from Murphy while leaning into an adjoining stall. There's no way to tell if that blow was playful or aggressive, zoo officials have said.

The zoo will take its time introducing Tatu to Murphy, it said in a news release. But eventually they believe having the older male giraffe and the young male together will teach Tatu valuable giraffe behavior.

"And Murphy will benefit from the stimulation of a companion," the zoo said.

Tatu won't be introduced to zoo guests until the zoo knows that he has adjusted to his new home and his new roommate.

Philly Football Star, PSU Recruit Charged With Wawa Robbery

A Philadelphia high school football star and Penn State University recruit is accused of robbing a local Wawa store over the summer.

Isheem Young, 18, was arrested early Friday morning. His bail is set at 10% of $150,000.

Police say Young, who was 17 at the time, robbed a Wawa store on the 1600 block of Delaware Avenue in Philadelphia back on July 30. Surveillance video captured a suspect, identified by investigators as Young, entering the office of the store. Police say he was armed with a gun and demanded cash from the safe. He then took $13,600 in cash and ordered two Wawa employees to lie on the floor before fleeing the scene on foot toward Tasker Street, police said.

Surveillance video captured the suspect running into a gold Buick Century which police say fled southbound on I-95, according to investigators.

On Nov. 30, exactly four months after the robbery, police spotted the getaway vehicle on the 200 block of W. Seymour Street. As officers towed it, the owner of the car, identified as 21-year-old Rafi Johnson, approached his vehicle, investigators said. Johnson was then arrested and a search warrant was executed at his home and on the car, according to investigators.

Johnson allegedly admitted to being the getaway driver during the robbery. Police obtained more information and identified Young as the robbery suspect. They also determined the Wawa assistant manager, identified as Quasir Wingate, who they originally interviewed as a witness, was involved in the robbery.

Philly.com reports Wingate is Young's brother though police did not confirm this with NBC10.

On Friday, police executed a search warrant at Young's home. They then arrested both Young and Wingate at the location. They also say they found the hooded sweatshirt Young allegedly wore during the robbery though they did not find the money or a weapon.

Young, Johnson and Wingate are all charged with aggravated assault, robbery, criminal conspiracy and other related offenses.

Young was a star running back at Imhotep Institute Charter High School who was profiled on NBC10's High School Blitz. ESPN ranked him the No. 6 recruit in Pennsylvania and the No. 170 recruit in the Class of 2018. Young committed to the Penn State Nittany Lions on July 18, nearly two weeks before the alleged robbery.

Young missed Imhotep Charter’s Class 4A state semifinal win over Bethlehem Catholic Friday night due to the arrest.

Penn State has not yet released a statement on the charges against Young.

An 11-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital after an apartment fire in Blackwood, New Jersey, killed her father and injured her mother, fire officials said.

Her mother was also taken to the hospital with second and third-degree burns.

The fire broke out sometime before 3 a.m. Sunday at Blackwood Falls Apartments in Camden County. It was mostly contained to the second-floor unit where the family lived.

A neighbor described the father as a hardworker who always looked out for his friends and family.

"He had just given my daughter a new Christmas tree for her new apartment," Kesha Welton said. "She took [his loss] really hard."

Officials do not know what caused the fire.

Drivers are seeing slightly lower prices at the gas pump in Pennsylvania.

AAA Mid-Atlantic said Sunday the average price of a gallon of regular gas in the state was $2.75, which is down 2 cents from last week. Motorists were paying $2.39 for gas in Pennsylvania at this time last year.

Analysts say pump prices should continue to fall in the weeks ahead as demand declines but say motorists will be paying the highest December gas prices since 2014.

The national average gas price Sunday was $2.48, down 3 cents from last week. But that's still 30 cents higher than the national average from a year ago.
