Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood says $100 in cash and a phone were taken in the attack that happened Sunday around 2:30 p.m. while walking home from the 69th Street Terminal. Speaking from the hospital, the victim told NBC10 that he is "upset" and "not too happy" after the attack. Chitwood took to Twitter on Monday to ask for the public's help in catching the person who committed the crime. He called the suspect a "scumbag" and a "predator" who needs to be taken down. The victim, who has not been identified, has been hospitalized with a possible fractured femur.

Nurse Walking to Car Stabbed in Stomach Steps from ER: A veteran nurse at a New Jersey hospital was stabbed in the stomach just steps away from the emergency room Sunday evening by a man who demanded money, authorities say. The Rutgers University Police Department says it is investigating the 7:30 p.m. attack in a campus-owned parking lot near University Hospital on South Orange Avenue. Police said the nurse, identified by her union as a 25-year, extremely dedicated employee at the hospital who is in her late 60s, was walking to her car when the would-be robber approached and stabbed her. Police say she was able to stumble into the hospital's emergency room, where she was rushed into surgery. Her condition was not released. The union says it has raised security concerns with management in the past. It says it will address the concerns again at a pre-scheduled meeting to be held Tuesday.

Volcano Gushing Ash Over Bali Closes Airport: A volcano gushing towering columns of ash closed the airport on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali for a second day Tuesday, disrupting travel for tens of thousands, as authorities renewed their warnings for villagers to evacuate. Mount Agung has been hurling clouds of white and dark gray ash about 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) above its cone since the weekend and lava is welling in the crater, sometimes reflected as an orange-red glow in the ash plumes. Its explosions can be heard about 12 kilometers (7 1/2 miles) away. The local airport authority said Tuesday that closure for another 24 hours was required for safety reasons. Volcanic ash poses a deadly threat to aircraft, and ash from Agung is moving south-southwest toward the airport. Ash has reached a height of about 30,000 feet as it drifts across the island. Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency raised the volcano's alert to the highest level Monday and expanded an exclusion zone to 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the crater in places from the previous 7 1/2 kilometers. It said a larger eruption is possible, though a top government volcanologist has also said the volcano could continue for weeks at its current level of activity and not erupt explosively. Agung's last major eruption in 1963 killed about 1,100 people.

An American graduate student has attempted suicide during his nearly 16 months in an Iranian jail, his wife told NBC News as she pleaded with the Trump administration to help free him.

"Only the U.S. government can sort this out, only the U.S. government can help us," Qu Hua said of her husband, Princeton Ph.D. candidate Xiyue Wang. "I hope President Trump can open up a dialogue with Iranian authorities to discuss a resolution of my husband's case."

Wang, 36, was born in China but is a naturalized American citizen. He is "extremely stressed" and depressed, said Qu, with whom Wang has a 4-year-old son.

Wang was arrested in August 2016 while researching an Iranian dynasty for his degree and sentenced nearly a year later to 10 years in prison for "spying under the cover of research," according to Iran's judiciary news service.

Trash Truck Strikes, Kills Woman, 24, Biking in Center City

A sanitation truck struck and killed a cyclist while making a turn in Center City Philadelphia Tuesday morning.

The privately-owned trash truck and the 24-year-old woman were both going along Spruce Street when the truck turned onto 11th Street and struck the woman around 7:25, Philadelphia Police Capt. Sekou Kinebrew said.

The woman was rushed to nearby Jefferson University Hospital where she died a short time later, Philadelphia police said. She lived nearby in the area of 7th and South streets.

The Gold Medal trash truck stopped along 11th Street after the crash and the driver cooperated with investigators. Police spent three hours investigating the wreck. The roadway reopened around 10:30 a.m.

Spruce Street, a one way street westbound, has a dedicated bicycle lane on the right hand side. It wasn't clear if the cyclist was in that lane. 11th Street goes one way northbound.

Kinebrew said that further investigation would be needed to see if any traffic violation or other charges would be filed. He didn't know if the cyclist was wearing a helmet.

The death puts a spotlight on cycling safety in Center City where cars, trucks, buses and bikes share the road daily.

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia planned a 5 p.m. Wednesday vigil at the site of the deadly crash in the memory of everyone killed in traffic crashes in the city. The bike coalition says three cyclists have died this year.

"Just being one (death) is significant enough to, at least, look at what happened and maybe see what can be done to make sure things like this don't happen again," Kinebrew said.

Gold Medal didn't reply to requests for comment.

Breaking Ground on Philly's New Holocaust Memorial Plaza

A new Holocaust Memorial Plaza that promises to be "a singular place of learning and remembrance" is coming to Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney joined Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, Center City District CEO Paul Levy and others at Tuesday’s groundbreaking ceremony at 16th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

"In light of the toxic national rhetoric, it's more important than ever that we properly commemorate the victims of the tragedy and never forget this dark period of history," Kenney said.

The new $7-million memorial plaza, funded by the Philadelphia Holocaust Remembrance Foundation, features Six Pillars, concentration camp train tracks, a tree grove, the Theresienstadt Tree and an eternal flame. It will be built around the existing Monument to Six Million Jewish Martyrs that remembers the six million Jewish people killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust.

The Plaza includes "elements that showcase how American constitutional protections and values can prevent crimes against humanity from being committed," organizers say.

Meek Mill Judge Must Decide on Bail, Superior Court Says

        $
        0
        0

The Philadelphia judge overseeing rapper Meek Mill’s probation case must quickly decide whether or not he should be granted bail, the Pennsylvania Superior Court ruled Tuesday.

The decision came as the higher court denied an emergency motion for writ of habeus corpus — filed hours before — asking that Mill be released on bond as his case is reviewed.

Attorneys for Mill say Common Pleas Judge Genece Brinkley has ignored their motions asking for bail and that she recuse herself from the case. That led them to appeal to the higher court. But the Superior Court kicked the case back to Brinkley saying she must make a ruling before they can hear any appeal.

"The Court of Common Pleas is directed to enter a disposition of Petitioner's November 16, 2017 motion for bail without further delay," the ruling states.

Brinkley will also need to send a brief explanation about her decision — whatever it may be — to the Superior Court.

The quick decision pleased Mill’s legal team, which has been exploring many legal avenues to get the Philly-born rapper, whose legal name is Robert Williams, out of a state prison in Chester, Pennsylvania.

"We’re pleased that the Superior Court took immediate action to direct the Court of Common Pleas to decide on the application for bail "without further delay." We remain hopeful that Mr. Williams will be promptly released on bail," attorney Jordan Siev said in a statement.

Tuesday's legal wrangling is the latest chapter in a decade-long saga over Mill's freedom.

The 30-year-old is nearly a month into a 2 to 4 year prison sentence for violating probation.

The probation stems from a 2007 arrest for drug possession and carrying a firearm without a license. He was convicted two years later and placed on parole after spending several months in jail.

The sentence has been called harsh and unfitting of the lapses, which included an alleged fight in the St. Louis airport and performing tricks on a dirt bike in New York City. Prosecutors had recommended no jail time, but Brinkley felt otherwise.

Two weeks ago, Mill was mistakenly granted a bail hearing after a court clerical error. The hearing was canceled later that day.

Brinkley has not commented on the controversy since she's barred from doing so by court rules.

The decision comes a day after prominent civil rights activist and MSNBC host Rev. Al Sharpton visited Mill in Chester prison.

Sharpton has joined a growing chorus of people who see Mill's case as an example of unfair and harsh treatment of African-American and Latino people in the criminal justice system.

Mill's management company, Roc Nation, and friends like rap mogul Jay-Z and Philadelphia 76ers minority owner Michael Rubin have launched an advertising campaign to #FreeMeekMill on social media and outdoors with billboards, bus shelter posters, and bus signage.

Jay-Z penned an op-ed in The New York Times saying Mill's case demonstrates how the criminal justice system “entraps and harasses” African-Americans.

Coroner IDs 4 People Killed by Smoke in Senior Home Fire

        0

Four people who died in the burned out Barclay Friends Senior Living Community earlier this month died of smoke inhalation, according to the Chester County Coroner's Office.

The victims were identified as Mildred Gadde, Theresa Malloy, Delores Parker and Thomas Parker.

The inferno broke out at the Chester County, Pennsylvania, facility on Nov. 16. It took crews days to recover the bodies from the West Chester fire scene.

The manner of death — including what cause the fire — is pending further investigation, Coroner Gordon Eck said.

Special agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) National Response Team, Pennsylvania State Police and Chester County Fire Marshal’s office announced last week they had recovered remains of all those believed to have perished in the fire.

Investigators continued to sift through the rubble of the Barclay Friends Senior Living Community along North Franklin Street through the Thanksgiving holiday, officials said. A large crane and other excavating equipment was brought to the fire scene as investigators continued the search for a cause of the fire.

No foul play is suspected in the fire, the ATF said.

The fire erupted shortly before 11 p.m. while most of the 137 residents were sleeping. The blaze started in the back of one of the buildings, ripped through the center and all the way to the ceiling, creating a "raging inferno," Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said.

Flames tore through the senior living community's personal care wing with such speed that hundreds of first responders rushed into the building without securing their breathing equipment.

Several firefighters described their helmets melting and cracking from the intense heat.

Most of the residents were bedridden or in wheelchairs. Senior home staff and outside neighbors rushed from room to room in the facility, wrapping residents in blankets and sweeping them out in to the frigid night in wheelchairs and even in beds.

Paramedics took 27 residents to hospitals for treatment. Some of the injuries were described by authorities as "serious." Of those that were rescued without injury, 102 were placed in other facilities and 31 have been taken in by family members.

Parts of the complex burned for more than 24 hours and unstable walls teetered over the scene.

Last year, state health officials cited Barclay Friends and its owner Kendal with fire safety violations, including a failure to maintain corridor smoke doors. The violations were recorded in the facility's nursing home section, which was not touched by fire.

A provisional license status for the nursing home was lifted in February following a new inspection, but at least one fire safety violation remained, state records showed.

Philly Teen ID'd as Person Found Dead on Top of SEPTA Train

A West Philadelphia teenager was identified Tuesday as the person found dead late last week on top of a SEPTA train when it pulled into a Center City station.

The burned body of Raekwon Jones, 15, of the Mill Creek section, was found on top of the Regional Rail train when it pulled into Jefferson Station during the Friday morning rush hour, city police said.

Jones' remains were burned beyond recognition, which made it impossible initially for police to identify the person killed.

It remains unclear what Jones was doing on top of the train, or how he got up to the area where he was apparently electrocuted.

The "charred body," as police described it, was found about 7:30 a.m. at Jefferson Station, with the person's legs dangling off the side of the top of the train.

The body was found near the rear of the train in the vicinity of the power lines that connect to overhead the electrical source, police said. The connection between train and SEPTA power is high-voltage and deadly to the touch.

"The male has severe burns all over his face and body," city Officer Eric McLaurin said in a statement. "The male's clothing and belongings were also burned beyond recognition."

Delays of up to 20 minutes on Regional Rail lines were initially reported, but by noon, most of the train lines were running close to schedule.

6 Teens Charged in On-Ice Hockey Brawl in March

The score was 7-1 late in the quarterfinals game of the Philadelphia "Flyers Cup" Scholastic Championship Class 2A.

With about seven minutes left, the blowout in March between the Ridley Raiders and the Central Bucks West Bucks club teams turned violent. Video showed fights breaking out all over the ice.

What was a hockey brawl in March became a court battle Tuesday when six players from Ridley were charged with simple assault and two other related counts in Montgomery County district court.

The game was played at Hatfield Ice on County Line Road.

Two Central Bucks West students reported being injured, police said initially. Some of the players later talked with NBC10 about the melee.

        [[415936573, C]]

Five of the six are charged as adults because they are 18 years old. The sixth is a juvenile who has not been identified. The adults are Nathan Dunning, of Kendron Avenue in Morton, Jake Cross, of Greenhouse Lane in Secane, Ryan Gricco, of Blackrock Road, Swarthmore, Thomas Plotts, of Donna Avenue, Woodlyn, and Brock Anderson, of Morton.

In addition to simple assault, they each face a count of conspiracy to commit simple assault and harassment.

Video from the stands posted to social media appeared to show some scuffling among the two teams' fans as well.

Plastic vs. Cosmetic Surgery: What to Know Before a Nip-Tuck

        $
        0
        0

After being diagnosed with gestational diabetes and losing her baby while 9 months pregnant, Linn Rowell from North Philadelphia felt uncomfortable in her own skin. Her body had changed and she wanted to get her life back.

Rowell researched local cosmetic surgeons and stumbled upon celebrity doctor Dr. Ayman Shanine, who provided butt injections to “Mob Wives” star Renee Graziano. Shanine, a New York-based gynecologist, ran a Havertown location that offered good prices.

“I’m thinking I hit the jackpot,” Rowell said.

She prepaid his office $2,150 - about one-third of the total cost for a Brazilian butt lift with fat transfer. But two months before her planned procedure, Rowell started hearing horror stories from Shanine’s patients, including one woman who took her complaint to the E! television show “Botched.”

“I was mortified. I was scared,” she said.

Rowell canceled her procedure and asked for a refund, but one never came until NBC10 Responds stepped in.

During our investigation into Shanine, our team discovered the good doctor had at least 29 administrative charges waged against him. The allegations came from eight separate patients who accused him of gross negligence and gross incompetence.

One patient emerged with a deformed buttocks while another was allegedly rushed to the hospital after a liposuction procedure.

“Because I’m a gynecologist, I have a special eye for a woman’s body. I know how to sculpt a woman,” Shanine told NBC10.

No criminal charges have been filed against Shanine, and he still has an active license to practice in both Pennsylvania and New York.

But avoiding any unnecessary discomfort while undergoing cosmetic procedures in paramount, said Dr. Richard Brannon Claytor, a plastic surgeon in Bryn Mawr. The first thing to know, he said, is the difference between a plastic surgeon and cosmetic surgeon.

“Plastic surgeons are members of the medical community who have gone through medical school residency and training specific for plastic surgery,” he said.

In other words, plastic surgeons are doctors who have finished medical school and subsequent residencies, passed verbal and written exams specific to plastic surgery and then become board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The added training can sometimes take an additional 10 years, Claytor said.

Cosmetic surgeons, on the other hand, receive training after their residency in a different field in some instances, including Shanine who was first a gynecologist. Also, cosmetic doctors do not always have the necessary privileges to perform procedures in the hospital, so they operate from their office.

“We don’t like to do [cosmetic procedures] in the hospital because they get bad results,” Shanine said. “Hospitals have a lot of infections from other sick patients.”

But there is also a difference between cosmetic and plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is for enhancement while plastic surgery is for repairs and reconstruction. It’s the difference between getting lip injections for a fuller-looking mouth and stitching up a split lip in the emergency room.

Other things to keep in mind before going under the knife:

Do you research. Who is your doctor? What is their training, speciality and status of their certification? Do they have litigation against them? Are their patients happy have the fact?

Also, where will your procedure take place? Going to the hospital could have benefits such as emergency treatment if something goes wrong.

Consider your overall health: Are you a smoker? Are you pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant? Do you eat well? Are you at a healthy body weight? All of these factors can contribute to your recovery time and potentially put you at risk.

If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.

        Bottom line? Do your homework.

“Patients today are very savvy,” Clayton said. “The internet is a phenomenal resource.”
