TODAY'S TOP STORY

Girl, 3, Accidentially Shoots Herself in Leg: A little girl in Southwest Philadelphia shot herself in the thigh Sunday after finding her father's gun, police said. The shooting occurred inside a home in the 1300 block of South Wilton Street in the Kingsessing section of Philadelphia. The girl's father told detectives that he always locks up his .40 caliber handgun, but he was running late Sunday afternoon and asked his mother to hide the weapon while he was away, police said. "You have these parents who want to have guns - and you have the right to own a gun - but when you have children, you have a bigger responsibility to make sure that gun is put away," Lt. John Walker said. Doctors at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia performed surgery on the 3-year-old in hopes of saving her leg, police said. A gun was recovered at the scene, police said. Four adults home at the time of the accident are being questioned by police and could face child endangerment charges.

Woman Found Dead on I-95 Victim of Apparent Murder-Suicide: A 32-year-old woman found dead near an on-ramp of northbound Interstate 95 in Bucks County Saturday evening was the apparent victim of a murder-suicide, Pennsylvania State Police said Sunday. The body of Maria Choo Lin Choo was found Saturday shortly after 5:30 p.m. by police responding to a call of a woman running against traffic in the northbound lanes of I-95 and Woodhaven Road in Bensalem. When officials arrived to the scene, she was already dead. Police discovered multiple gunshot wounds on her body, officials said. Laying on top of her, also dead, was 60-year-old David Choo Lin Choo. He held a semi-automatic handgun in his right hand, according to investigators. An autopsy revealed the woman died from multiple gunshot wounds while the man died from a single, self-inflicted gunshot. Both people were from Philadelphia.

Eagles Defense Does the Electric Slide, Offense Goes Bowling: The NFL relaxed its rules on touchdown celebrations just in time for the Philadelphia Eagles to be incredibly good at scoring points and it's a wonderful thing. But the Birds aren't just doing choreographed celebrations when they score touchdowns, they're also doing them when the defense makes big plays -- and even when those interceptions are overturned. Carson Wentz and the boys had a bevy of opportunities to celebrate on Sunday when they embarrassed the Chicago Bears to the tune of 31-3. Your Philadelphia Eagles are 10-1 and they're having fun doing it. The two most notable celebrations came on an Alshon Jeffery touchdown and a Rasul Douglas interception that was later ruled an incomplete pass. But not before the defense got their party on. Jeffery went bowling after his TD with the rest of the offense playing the part of bowling pins.

Prince Harry, Actress Megan Markle to Wed Next Year: Actress, humanitarian campaigner, lifestyle blogger — and, next spring, a princess. Palace officials announced Monday that Prince Harry is engaged to Meghan Markle, confirming months of rumors that the couple was close to tying the knot. In some ways, Markle — a mixed-race American raised in California, an outspoken full-time actress, and a divorcee — makes a surprising addition to Britain's monarchy. But the institution has moved on with the times, and the romance between Markle and Harry — who has repeatedly stressed his wish to lead as "normal" a life as he could — has a decidedly unstuffy, modern feel to it. Markle, best known for her role as an ambitious paralegal in the hit U.S. legal drama "Suits," surprised many when she shared her feelings for Harry in a September cover story for Vanity Fair. Asked about the media frenzy surrounding their courtship, the 36-year-old said: "At the end of the day I think it's really simple ... we're two people who are really happy and in love.” Describing Harry as her "boyfriend," Markle said that while she expected that she and Harry would have to "come forward" about their relationship at some point, the two were just a couple enjoying time spent with each other.

Firefighters Sift Through Garbage Truck to Rescue Man

Firefighters dug through trash and debris in the back of a garbage truck as they worked for hours to free a man stuck outside a Philadelphia halfway house.

The dramatic rescue played out inside a Waste Management Truck outside the The Kintock Group home along the 300 block of East Erie Avenue around 5:30 a.m. Monday, according to the facility and fire dispatchers.

Firefighters located the 33-year-old man in the compacter section of the truck and worked to get to him by removing trash for more than two hours. Firefighters got the man onto a stretcher and out of the truck around 7:40 a.m.

You could see the man moving his arms while strapped to a stretcher. He was listed in critical condition with abdomen, hip and leg injuries, Philadelphia Police said.

Kintock serves as a rehab center, the final stop, for incarcerated people before they reenter the general community.

Authorities initially said the man had escaped from the facility but a roll call revealed no escapees, Pennsylvania Department of Corrections spokeswoman Susan McNaughton said.

It was unclear how the man got into the secured facility grounds. He could have been asleep in the dumpster or wound up in the truck before it drove onto the grounds.

Murder Trial for Chesco Road Rage Suspect Continued

        0

The trial for a Pennsylvania man charged with shooting and killing an 18-year-old student during a road rage encounter won't happen until next year.

David Desper was set to go on trial in the Court of Common Pleas Monday but the case was continued to January when a hearing will be scheduled, his attorney Daniel McCarrigle told NBC10.

Desper, 28, is accused of gunning down Bianca Roberson on June 28.

Police say Desper, of Trainer, Pennsylvania, and Roberson, of West Chester, were engaged in a high-speed "cat-and-mouse game" as both tried to merge into a single highway lane on Route 100 in Chester County. Desper shot Roberson in the head and then sped off, according to investigators. After a dramatic manhunt that spanned multiple states and days, Desper turned himself into authorities on July 2.

Desper is charged with first- and third-degree murder, criminal homicide, possession of an instrument of crime and reckless endangerment.

Those who knew Roberson described her as a “sweet child” with a “full life to live.” On the day she died, the recent high school graduate was returning home from a college shopping trip.

She was set to attend Jacksonville University in Florida this fall and wanted to study criminal justice, her family said.

“There are no words that can describe what he did,” Renee Manon, a close family friend, said. “A mother, a father lost their child. What can [Desper] say? There is nothing he can say.”

“He took something away from us,” Roberson’s father, Rodney Roberson, said after an early court hearing.

“We need to have justice on some other things. We need to take some things from him, make some things painful for him. It’s not about money. We’re just trying to do whatever it is we can to get back at him.”

Desper continues to be held without bail at the Chester County Prison. McCarrigle declined to comment further about the case.

'Humiliated': Pa. Massage Envy Victim Speaks Amid New Report

A Delaware County woman is speaking publicly about the sexual assault she endured at a Chester County Massage Envy franchise as a new report alleges there are dozens more victims like her across the country.

Susan Ingram was in the middle of a massage at Massage Envy's West Chester location in May 2015 when her massage therapist, James Deiter, sexually assaulted her with his fingers. Ingram said Deiter also placed his erect penis in her hand and ran it across her body.

"I felt humiliated. I felt used. I felt broken...," Ingram said in an interview that aired Monday on The Today Show.

Ingram was one of nine women assaulted by Deiter, who later admitted to the crimes in a 2016 plea agreement. Court documents show the 65-year-old Lancaster County man pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated felony indecent assault and six counts of misdemeanor indecent assault. He is serving up to 13 years in a state prison and is registered as a sex offender.

Ingram also shared her story as part of a BuzzFeed News investigation published Sunday. The report found Ingram is among some 180 people who filed sexual misconduct complaints or lawsuits against Massage Envy employees at locations nationwide. The report alleges the billion dollar spa chain and its franchisees mishandled or ignored these cases and many more.

NBC News has not confirmed all of the allegations.

In Deiter's case, two women tried to warn the franchise about inappropriate behavior before Ingram was assaulted, BuzzFeed reports. Ingram told NBC News and BuzzFeed she was dismissed by the West Chester location's manager when reporting the incident. Deiter was fired after Ingram filed a police report.

In a statement Sunday, Massage Envy — which has more than 1,100 franchises in 49 states, according to the company's website — said the incidents described in the report were "heartbreaking for us and for the franchisees that operate Massage Envy locations."

Adam Horowitz, a lawyer who has worked on two dozen cases against Massage Envy, said the actual number of assaults is likely considerably higher.

Ingram has filed a civil lawsuit against Massage Envy alleging in court documents that the West Chester staff "unfathomably recommended Deiter to unknowing female customers after they knew he had already sexually assaulted at least one client at that location."

The suit is pending a jury trial in Philadelphia's Court of Common Pleas.

Nurse Walking to Car Stabbed in Stomach Feet From ER

A veteran nurse at a New Jersey hospital was stabbed in the stomach just steps away from the emergency room Sunday evening by a man who demanded money, authorities say.

The Rutgers University Police Department says it is investigating the 7:30 p.m. attack in a campus-owned parking lot near University Hospital on South Orange Avenue. Police said the nurse, identified by her union as a 25-year, extremely dedicated employee at the hospital who is in her late 60s, was walking to her car when the would-be robber approached and stabbed her.

Police say she was able to stumble into the hospital's emergency room, where she was rushed into surgery. Her condition was not released.

The union says it has raised security concerns with management in the past. It says it will address the concerns again at a pre-scheduled meeting to be held Tuesday.

You Can Be a Child's Secret Santa by Answering Letter Wish

Since 1912, the United States Postal Service has provided people with the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children around the holidays.

Operation Santa connects our area’s children with one of Santa’s helpers who can answer their Christmas wishes. With locations around the country, the Operation Santa program continues to fulfill the Christmas dreams of children nationwide.

The Philadelphia Main Post Office on Chestnut Street is serving as Santa's local workshop, and everyone is encouraged to stop by and 'adopt' a letter. Once someone chooses a letter, they go out and buy what the child wished for and bring it back to the post office wrapped, all ready for shipping. Make sure to bring proper identification and your holiday spirit when you come in.

Ray Daiutolo Sr., a USPS representative, says he enjoys seeing people come into the office and look through the letters.

“That’s what the season is about, the gift of giving,” says Daiutolo.

People can go pick out as many letters as they want from noon to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday until Dec. 8.

        A Quiet End to November

        $

You may picture temperatures plummeting and snow falling as we round into December. It’s the winter itch. But don’t get ahead of yourself! We’re running warmer than average, with dry and sunny conditions stretching the week.

        What’s going on?

During winter, we commonly track cold arctic (northern) air slipping to the south and pooling cold air atop of us. When this weather pattern occurs, we forecast bitter cold mornings and chilly afternoons.

        [[460356253, C]]

Take a look at the temperatures across the nation as of Monday afternoon. The pattern I described above is NOT currently occurring. Quite the opposite.

The southwest and mid-west were far warmer than average (shaded orange and yellow). Plus, notice the coldest temperatures (blues and purples) sit well to the north of our region. In the following days, the weather pattern pushes the warmer air our direction, and forces the coldest air even farther away. As a result, our temperatures will be above average-- flirting with 60 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday.

        Plenty of Sunshine

High pressure will linger atop our region over the next several days. What does that mean? High pressure commonly creates something like a “bubble” over a region; it keeps rain or snow or any active weather out of its path. Instead, our region will see sunny to mostly sunny conditions. Rain doesn’t return to the forecast until Thursday night, when a cold front approaches the region.

        Is this unusual?

        Temperatures are above average.

        [[460356373, C]]

This time of year, Philadelphia sees an average high temperature of 52 degrees. So, upper 50s and low 60s is nearly a 10 degree difference. But, last November ended with two days in the 60s, too. And the record high temperatures for the next several days are in the low 70s. Yes, this is unusual, but not incredibly so.

        Was November Warmer Than Average?

Nope! With only several days left in the month, Philadelphia’s November is actually slightly BELOW normal (0.9 degrees below, to be exact). Why? Have you already forgotten the bitter cold we battled mid-month? Temperatures only rose to the 40s several days in a row!

        [[460356433, C]]

That cold helped to balance the warmer than average days we experienced at the beginning and end of the month. We expect with the last few days of the month hitting near 60, the monthly average will be near normal.

        So What Does December Hold?

It will begin fairly average, but models are starting to suggest a big cool down is possible as we progress through the month. This far out, models are just giving a hint of the possibilities, but they seem to be in fairly good agreement on a major pattern shift.

         [[460356713, C]]

Check out the American model (GFS) heights projection for next next weekend (Dec. 9). All that blue indicates MUCH cooler temperatures, which may come with more storms as well. Details on that as we get into December and the picture becomes more clear.

Sharpton: Meek Mill Is a Symbol of Criminal Justice Abuse

        $
        0
        0

Standing under the shadows of Chester State Prison near Philadelphia, the Rev. Al Sharpton delivered stern and impassioned remarks Monday evening after spending more than one hour with incarcerated rapper Meek Mill.

“Meek represents thousands of people in Pennsylvania — and even tens of thousands of people around the country — that have been victimized by abusive probationary and parole systems that give room for judges to act way beyond what is necessary,” Sharpton said.

Mill was sentenced earlier this month to two to four years for violating his probation despite prosecutors recommending no jail time.

Since the ruling, Mill has skyrocketed to national fame and become a symbol for critics of the criminal justice system, which they say unfairly targets African-Americans.

“If you can do something like this to a successful artist like Meek Mill, you can do this to many around the country,” Sharpton said.

Mill was first arrested in 2007 on charges that included carrying a firearm without a license and drug possession. He was found guilty two years later and sentenced to 11 to 23 months in prison with five years of probation.

He was released after eight months for good behavior and then arrested several times in subsequent years for violating his probation, mostly for leaving the state of Pennsylvania without the court's approval.

Several of his violations were more serious. He was arrested for allegedly being involved in a fight at a St. Louis airport — though those charged were later dropped — and for popping wheelies on a dirt bike in New York City.

In 2013, Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Genece Brinkley ordered Mill to attend etiquette classes.

The two have faced off several times in Philadelphia courtrooms over the past decade. Both Sharpton and Mill’s attorney, Joe Tacopina, accused Brinkley of having some kind of vendetta against the rapper during their decade-long legal battle.

Mill’s defense team filed a motion earlier this month asking Brinkley to recuse herself from the case and allow a new judge to reconsider the rapper's fate.

“This young man did his time,” Sharpton said. “You’re really exposing a ruthlessness in the system that should be changed.”

Sharpton finished his remarks by vowing to see Mill’s case through until the end.

But Mill is far from alone. Other celebrities have flocked to his side and even created billboards calling for his release. The hashtag #FreeMeekMil has trended on social media for weeks.

Activists and renowned musicians from Colin Kaepernick to Jay-Z have pointed to his jailing as representative of what they describe as the harsh treatment of blacks by the criminal justice system.

In a New York Times op-ed, Jay-Z said Mill’s case shows how the criminal justice system “entraps and harasses” African Americans.

“He has been on probation for basically his entire adult life. For about a decade, he’s been stalked by a system that considers the slightest infraction a justification for locking him back inside,” Jay-Z wrote.

Al Sharpton runs the National Action Network and is a talk-show host on MSNBC, which is owned by NBCUniversal, the parent company of this site.
