Soil Contamination Shuts Down Montgomery County Park

A sign warning neighbors to stay away from Pollack Park in Montgomery County greeted unsuspecting visitors Wednesday afternoon.

Unsafe levels of heavy metals could be to blame for the contamination, but further tests will have to conducted, officials said. Until then, the park will be closed indefinitely.

“We are working to finalize the results of a study and secure funds for cleanup required to reopen the park. We do not have a timeline for reopening the park at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience,” officials posted on Facebook.

Residents told NBC10 they are worried how a potential contamination could impact their families.

“I raised four kids here and now I’m concerned for them and myself,” Karen Bonenberger said. “It crossed my mind to put the house for sale.”

Officials discovered the contamination while upgrading the park, according to the Pottstown Mercury. A full environmental report is expected sometime next week.

“Maybe all the property in the borough that the children play on should be tested,” Bonenberger said.

A burned body was found early Friday morning on the top of a SEPTA Regional Rail train when the train pulled into Jefferson Station in Center City, Philadelphia.

Transit police were holding the scene at the underground station at 11th and Market streets about 7:30 a.m., and the body was visible to an NBC10 photographer.

It may have been electrocuted by the high-voltage equipment connecting the train to electrical lines. They provide power to the trains.

SEPTA did not provide details about the incident, but described it as a medical emergency in a tweet.

The transit agency's media relations officials could not be reached.

SEPTA also tweeted that Regional Rail trains through the station were experiencing delays up to 20 minutes.

Philadelphia officials hoping to sell engraved blocks from the original Love Park were surprised to learn about an hour before the granite keepsakes went up for grabs that they didn't have the right to sell them.

A spokeswoman for the city's parks department said Friday that they incorrectly assumed they had permission to sell the small souvenirs, which are marked with the iconic lettering of artist Robert Indiana's LOVE sculpture.

But right before they were to go on sale, the department was informed that they couldn't sell them. She says they hope to clear up the matter as soon as possible.

The city aimed to sell 250 of the mementos at a Christmas market. A long line had formed, but shoppers' names instead were added to a reservation list.

'I Was Traumatized': Senior Home Resident Recalls Inferno

The wreckage remains more than one week after an assisted living facility in West Chester was burned to the ground, killing four elderly residents who could not escape in time.

On Friday, officials gave NBC10 a close-up look at the damage sustained at the Barclay Friends Senior Living Community.

“I turned around and saw a sheet of fire,” resident Sue Broderick, who lived in room 215 on the second floor of the south wing, said. “I never seen anything like that before.”

The fire erupted shortly before 11 p.m. last Thursday while most of the 137 residents were sleeping.

The blaze started in the back of one of the buildings, ripped through the center and all the way to the ceiling, creating a "raging inferno," Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said.

Flames tore through the senior living community's personal care wing with such speed that hundreds of first responders rushed into the building without securing their breathing equipment.

Several firefighters described their helmets melting and cracking from the intense heat.

The remains of four victims were recovered several days after the inferno. Family members have been notified.

“I can’t really tell you how I felt,” Broderick said. “It was horrifying and, I guess, I was traumatized.”

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.

"When you look at scene like this, what goes through your mind?,” she asked NBC10. “It's unbelievable so many people were able to escape in such a short amount of time.”
