Dad's Discovery of Training Devices Leads to Bomb Scare

A concerned father’s discovery of his son’s military training materials inside his bedroom led to a bomb scare and evacuations in Franconia Township, Montgomery County Wednesday afternoon.

The ordeal began shortly after noon when a man brought several packages to the Franconia Township Police Department on 671 Allentown Road. The man told police he had found the packages while cleaning his son’s room. His son is an explosives technician who is serving in the military overseas.

The packages contained five clay bricks and an aluminum container with wires protruding from the opening. Police say the items appeared to be materials used to make explosive devices for demolition.

The packages were immediately placed on the lawn in front of the police building and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Unit responded to the scene. Police officers, firefighters, an ambulance crew and fire police units from nearby townships also assisted.

“When they got here they said the items looked as though they were live so as a precaution we had everyone evacuate from the park and from our township building and police department building,” Franconia Township Police Chief Joe Kozeniewski said.

Employees and visitors at both the police department and municipal offices building were evacuated while residents in homes on the opposite of Allentown Road were told to shelter-in-place.

The Sheriff’s Deputy’s technicians initially believed the items were live explosives. They soon discovered however that the materials were marked as “inert” indicating they were most likely used for training purposes. The items were removed and no detonation was required.

Investigators say the man who delivered the materials later spoke to his son overseas who confirmed the items were training materials. No one was injured during the incident, which lasted for about two hours.

Chief Kozeniewski told NBC10 that while he recommends residents contact police if they find potentially explosive devices, it’s dangerous to handle them.

“If they discover it call 911,” Chief Kozeniewski said. “We’ll come to their house to get it. The danger of transporting it from their house to our station could take out the car or worse.”

Mackenzy Trievel was supposed to be picking up her son Tuesday after he spent four days with his dad. Instead, she went to the hospital to identify the body of her 2-year-old child.

“When he walked into a room, people would smile,” Trievel told NBC10. “He was a good boy. He was a perfect child.”

Qaden Trievel was sitting in a Walmart shopping cart when his father, Christopher Kuhn, stole $228 speakers from the Levittown store Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Kuhn allegedly got into his car and then sped away on Route 13. His Jeep crashed, rolling over several times and ejecting the young boy, who was not strapped into his seatbelt.

Kuhn ran away from the accident while his son lied in the middle of the street, officials said.

“He’s a disgusting human being,” Trievel said of her ex-boyfriend. “He was only worried about himself.”

Trievel told NBC she suffered years of abuse during her relationship with Kuhn, who was charged with third-degree murder, homicide by vehicle, accidents involving death or injury while not properly licensed, retail theft, endangering the welfare of children, recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license and running a red light.

His bail was set at $5 million cash.

Sources told NBC10 Kuhn had previously been arrested for credit card fraud, which cost him a job as a substitute teacher in New Jersey.

Trievel, who was never married to Kuhn, attempted several times to get sole custody of her son with no success, she said. On Facebook, the grieving mother accused Kuhn of using drugs and the courts of not listening to her concerns.

Qaden "needs some justice," Trievel said. "The courts need to step up."

She also posted about the overwhelming pain of losing a child:

“He saved my life and I wish I could have saved his I would give anything to hold him again. He was the light to my life and I’ll never forget all the laughs and smiles we shared I just can't believe this happened to you. I love you with all my heart I hope your laughing and having the best time. all I ever wanted was for you to be happy. Mommy misses you so much and loves you with all my heart.”

A Delaware day care worker is accused of beating a baby girl in her care and fracturing her tibia in an attempt to get the child to fall asleep.

Amber R. Worthy, 31, of New Castle, Delaware was arrested and charged with child abuse.

The investigation began on September 27 around 9:30 a.m. when Worthy was attending to an 11-month-old girl at the Happy Kids Academy on Old Baltimore Pike in Bear, Delaware.

Around 40 minutes after attending to the child, Worthy submitted an incident report to the day care’s director stating that while re-positioning the baby, she heard a crack in her foot, officials said. The director immediately reported the incident to the Delaware Division of Family Services. The case was then turned over to Delaware State Police.

Police say their investigation revealed that Worthy repeatedly hit the baby on the back and buttocks and aggressively re-positioned her multiple times in an attempt to get her to go to sleep. Worthy also allegedly repeatedly shook the girl’s legs and at one point intentionally twisted her right leg.

Officials say the baby suffered a fractured right tibia due to the abuse.

Worthy turned herself in to Delaware State Police Wednesday. She was arraigned and released on a $20,000 unsecured bond.

Anyone with information on the incident or any similar incidents should call Detective A. Lloyd at 302-365-8411. You can also call the Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or submit information on the Delaware Crime Stoppers website.

Worthy’s arrest comes less than a month after a man broke into Happy Kids Academy, punched a staff member in the face and tried to abduct two infants. More staff members thwarted the abduction and the man, identified by investigators as 47-year-old Calvin Davis, was apprehended by police after he attempted to flee the scene.

Police arrested a man who they say was caught on surveillance video taking an upskirt photo of a woman inside a Gloucester County Walmart store.

Joshua Nicholas of Williamstown, New Jersey was arrested Wednesday and charged with invasion of privacy and harassment.

Police say Nicholas was inside the Walmart on Route 42 in Turnersville, New Jersey on Sept. 26 between 3 p.m. and 5:11 p.m. A woman told police she noticed him following her around the store and texted a friend. At one point the woman suspected Nicholas was trying to take a picture up her skirt and made eye contact with him, according to investigators.

After several minutes, believing he had left and stopped following her, the woman heard a camera sound and turned to find Nicholas with his phone under her skirt, police said. The incident was captured on surveillance video.

Investigators say the woman confronted Nicholas who showed no remorse or concern. He then walked away before running to the parking lot.

Arrests Made in Debit Card Skimming at Montco ATMs

Two suspects are currently in custody for allegedly installing skimming devices to ATMs in Abington, Upper Moreland, Springfield, and Cheltenham Townships, according to Abington Police.

Police say debit card information from 182 customers was compromised over eight separate days between Aug. 11 and Aug. 26 when skimming devices were placed on the ATM at the Citizens Bank at 1359 Old York Road in Abington.

The same suspects also installed matching devices on the ATM at the Beneficial Bank on 1601 The Fairway in Jenkintown, the Citizen’s Bank at 1919 Easton Road in Willow Grove, police said.

Similar Crimes being investigated by the New York Police Department led detectives from Abington and Upper Moreland Police Departments to travel to New York and assist in executing search warrants at two suspects’ apartments in Queens, according to investigators.

Detectives found approximately $16,000 cash, several hundred VISA and store gift cards, and supplies used to manufacture their own skimming devices, Abington Police said.

Officials say the devices used would duplicate the account information from the card’s magnetic strip and a small camera would capture the PIN input.

Bogdan Gheorghe Stoica, 36, and Janos Mihalka, 36, of Queens were arrested in connection to the theft and are currently in custody at the New York Police Department.

A Montgomery County warrant was filed charging both suspects with 761 counts of alleged Access Device Fraud and 184 counts of alleged identity theft.

'Miracle' Boy Survives North Philadelphia Shooting

$

A shooting shouldn’t be a situation that a young boy has to mentally and emotionally deal with. But that’s the situation 6-year-old Jaden Anglin finds himself in.

“I’m mad,” Jaden told NBC10.

When asked why he was mad, the boy could only say “because.” He then looked on in silence.

It was Friday shortly before 8 p.m. when Jaden was standing next to a stop sign outside his home on 24th and Norris streets. He was one of several children playing in the area, which is located near a school. Suddenly a gunman opened fire and a bullet went through the boy’s left shoulder. Jaden crawled on his hands and knees to his home for safety as the shooter fled.

“When they were shooting, I saw blood on the pole and then I ran in the house,” Jaden said.

The boy was taken to the hospital where he was treated and eventually released. On Wednesday he showed the bandages that covered his bullet wound as his grandmother Bernice Beattie held him tight. Beattie now refers to her grandson as “miracle baby.”

“We could have just lost him,” she said. “The bullet could have just went to his heart and he would have been gone.”

A few days after the shooting, police arrested 22-year-old Abdul Holmes in connection to the incident. Investigators don’t believe Jaden was Holmes’ intended target. Yet regardless of what the intentions were, the impact the shooting had on an innocent boy remains.

Jaden talked about the treats he received in the hospital and was remarkably composed as he described he reflected on the shooting. Perhaps he’s still too young to fully comprehend what happened to him. Or perhaps he’s merely coping with a situation that a 6-year-old child shouldn’t have to cope with in the first place.

UPDATE: Police have guns drawn on pickup truck as they search for the suspected shooter.

The manhunt for a gunman who killed a man and injured the victim's wife spanned miles across a Pennsylvania county, eventually leading to an armed standoff near a school.

Gunfire rang out at a home on the 500 block of Longacre Drive in Lehigh Township Wednesday. Neighbors told NBC10 they heard the sound of people fighting around 6:30 p.m.

“We started hearing a woman screaming," said neighbor Kelsea Weber.

When police arrived at the home, they found an unresponsive 61-year-old man dead from and his wife hurt. Police have not yet revealed her condition.

Police released few details regarding what led to the incident, only saying that the gunman drove off in a truck after the shooting.

[[449519523, C]]

State Police did not release the suspect’s identity or description.

The search for the shooter spanned across Northampton County as it became focused on a home about 13 miles away from the scene of the killing in the area of Clearfield and Moorestown roads in Bushkill Township overnight.

Just after daybreak, SWAT officers could be seen entering the home. Then before 8 a.m., police could be seen racing from the Bushkill Township scene.

A short time later, police in Bethlehem Township surrounded a pickup truck near Oakland and Santee roads -- more than 11 miles from the Bushkill Township home. The armed standoff caused nearby Bethlehem Area School District schools including Freedom High and East Hills Middle schools to be put on lockout.

Earlier, investigators spent hours at the scene of the shooting collecting evidence.

“I had people scared texting me asking if we’re OK,” Weber said. “Because you just would never hear it in a small town like this."

Rare October Harvest Moon Will Illuminate Night Sky Thursday

$

0

Talk about an October surprise.

This year's Harvest Moon, the full moon that falls closest to the Northern Hemisphere's autumn equinox, when the harvest traditionally takes place, will grace the night sky on Thursday, Space.com notes

"With everything ripening at once, there was too much work to to do to stop at sundown. A bright full moon — a 'Harvest Moon' — allowed work to continue into the night," Tony Phillips wrote in a 2006 NASA article around the time of another October Harvest Moon.

The moon will be fully visible when it appears on Oct. 5, barring any cloud cover. The Harvest Moon normally falls in September, closer to the start of autumn, but September already had a full moon, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

Since the full moon usually appears very bright, anyone wanting to see the celestial body's noticeable features should be able to without a telescope.

What to Know

  • The peak of this year's Harvest Moon comes at 2:40 p.m EDT Thursday, according to Space.com, though the full moon lasts for a couple of days before and after.
  • Oct. 5 is the only night of the month where the moon will be in the sky all night. It rises after sunset and sets around sunrise the next morning, NJ.com reported
