Activist Gets OK to Burn Flag at Pennsylvania Town's Fair

A Pennsylvania activist has gotten permission to burn a combination Nazi-Confederate flag to protest a town fair's decision to allow the sale of Confederate flags.

Gene Stilp says he'll burn the flag Friday in a garbage can at the Columbia County courthouse after getting permission from the county commissioners on Thursday.

Stilp tells The (Wilkes-Barre) Times Leader he's upset that the Bloomsburg Fair is allowing six vendors to sell Confederate flags this year. The same fair drew national headlines last year when a vendor sold swastika flags before he was asked to leave.

Fair board president Paul Reichart says organizers have asked this year's vendors to display just one flag and put any they sell into bags. He says if the situation gets out of hand, fair officials will take action.

A man was shot just before noon Friday on a busy Center City street in Philadelphia, and police at the scene believe the shooter may be the man's 3-year-old nephew.

The shooting at 16th and Arch streets occurred as downtown streets began to fill with lunchtime crowds. The little boy, police said, was sitting in the back seat of a sports utility vehicle parked at the corner while the man shot was sitting in the driver's seat.

Numerous police cruisers swarmed the intersection near The Phoenix apartment building, which houses the Tir Na Nog restaurant, across 16th Street from Love Park.

The boy somehow unbuckled himself from the child seat and found the gun, which belongs to another uncle who had went into City Hall for an errand, police said. The child shot it once and struck his uncle, who is believed to be in stable condition at a nearby hospital.

The uninjured uncle is a Philadelphia Housing Authority police officer, according to officers at the scene. The gun used in the shooting is not believed to be his service weapon.

One Disaster After Another: What Can I Do to Help?

From whole islands losing power to entire neighborhoods flooded, millions affected by a string of natural disasters are in need of help. Loved ones in Mexico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Florida, and Texas continue to suffer in the aftermath of hurricanes and earthquakes.

Here are the ins and outs of how you can make a difference:

Q: Where can I donate?

A: First, a few steps you should take in order to find the right organization for you to donate to:

  1. Who have you heard about? Donate to organizations you know are reliable and trustworthy.
  2. Double check the charity is real. You can go to websites such as CharityCheckCharity Navigator, and GuideStar to make sure your donation goes to the right place.
  3. Designate where you want the money to go. Some organizations allow you to pick where you want the donation to go, such as the Earthquake Efforts in Mexico or Hurricane Relief in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  4. Be aware of the scams. GoFundMe pages and other individually-run funds are less trustworthy, so only give to who you trust. If you are texting to donate, confirm the number with organization on their website or by calling.

Q: What organization could I give to?

A: The following are examples of organizations that are known for their relief services and are currently working on site in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Mexico:

UNICEF

Global Giving

Catholic Charities

American Red Cross

American Kidney Fund

Save the Children

Mercy Corps

Q: What do they need?

A: Each situation is different, but the overarching necessity is money. By sending money, the organizations can use those fund in any way they see necessary: food, water, shelters, etc.

Q: Can I still send items such as clothes, water bottles, or blankets?

A: If you would like to send a non-monetary donation, please check with the organization. Many times, these items go to waste because they are not needed at the time of arrival. If items are needed, they will be on the organization's website. You can also call to find out what to send and where to send it.

Q: How much could I give?

A: The amount is up to you, and any amount is helpful. It can be a one-time gift or multiple gifts over weeks or months as an ongoing effort to hep.

Thousands of doses of heroin have been diverted from the streets after Delaware authorities confiscated the illicit opioids during a search of a Dover hotel.

The drugs were discovered as U.S. Marshals, Dover Police and Delaware State Police took 27-year-old Cameron Norwood and 25-year-old Natasha Morris into custody at the Best Western Galaxy Inn at 1700 E. Lebanon Road in Dover Thursday, officials said.

Norwood was wanted on a probation violation, state police said.

During a search of the hotel room and a 2000 Saturn Aura sedan, officials found 13,000 bags of heroin — 96 grams — and a loaded 9mm handgun, state police said.

Norwood and Morris have been charged with drug possession with intent to deliver, possession of a firearm, conspiracy and related offenses. They are being held on $170,000 cash bail. It is not clear if they retained legal counsel.
