Hurricane Irma Sets Sights on Florida: What It Looks Like

Hurricane Irma made landfall over Cuba Friday night.

It was the first time a Category 5 hurricane hit the country since 1924. While it was wreaking havoc over Cuba, Florida began experiencing Irma’s wrath.

Strong gusts and pockets of heavy rain within arm bands approached the southern tip of the state. Take a look at the photo above, shot by NBC10 photojournalist Augie Conte. Gusts were already between 50-60 mph around Miami Saturday morning.

Here are Irma’s current conditions, as of the 11 a.m. update. While Irma’s winds weakened from Category 5 level down to Category 3 throughout Saturday morning, it’s still an incredibly dangerous storm. It’s more than 500 miles of wind, while the state of Florida is only about 150 miles wide. The turn north is projected to begin Saturday afternoon, which will lead Irma to Florida.

Irma’s latest track, output by the National Hurricane Center, continues to keep Irma against the western coast of the state. Landfall over the Florida Keys as early as Sunday morning is expected.  As Irma moves through the warm water of the Straight of Florida, it’s likely the storm will power back up to a Category 4 hurricane. Irma is projected to ride the coast throughout the rest of Sunday, approaching Tampa for a possible second landfall by Sunday night into early Monday morning. Notice the cone projection. It still includes much of Florida, or even areas slightly farther off shore into the Gulf of Mexico. This indicates the track still is not set-in-stone. Hurricanes fluctuate too much for a guarantee of specific landfall location. Regardless of the exact path, it is certain that Florida will experience devastating and life-threatening effects. Let’s talk about those threats below.

First, storm surge. What is storm surge? It’s the rising of the ocean waters due to a hurricanes powerful winds and extremely low pressure. The water piles up and is thrust forward onto land. The worst storm surge hits the areas where the winds are flowing onshore, and in the locations closest to the strongest gusts.  In Southwest Florida, the storm tide may hit between 8-12 feet if peak surging occurs with high tide.  For the Southeastern coast of Florida, 5-10 feet is possible.

Take a look at what 12 feet of storm surge could look like: absolutely devastating. The purple area is 6 feet of surge, and the blue is 3 feet.

Now let’s talk winds. Category 4 hurricanes are defined by winds between 130 and 156 mph, sustained. Gusts can be even higher. At that speed, catastrophic damage is likely to occur. The strongest winds wrap around the eye of the storm, in something called the eyewall. The very strongest winds typically extend about 10-30 miles outside of the eye, but hurricane force winds (74+ milies per hour) are extending about 70 miles out from the center.  Tropical storm force winds (39 mph – 73 mph) will envelope the entire state of Florida as Irma passes.

How about rain? Here’s a look at the latest rain total forecast by the NHC. The Keys may see 10-20” of rain, with locally higher amounts. The Florida peninsula is likely to receive between 8 and 15 inches, with isolated higher amounts. This will lead to flooding concerns, even for areas that are not impacted by storm surge.

Irma, combined with Hurricane Jose (a category 4 storm projected to impact the Leeward Islands before spinning out to sea), are churning the waters. As a result, we’re seeing high risks for rip currents to form along all of our shores. From the Jersey Shore to the Delaware Beaches, it’s best to stay out of the water. We’ll have more updates on Irma’s movement as the storm aims to make landfall tomorrow morning.

Teen, Brother Arrested in Murder of Dad in Front of Daughter

Police arrested a teen boy accused of shooting and killing a father who tried to protect his 2-year-old daughter during a carjacking in the Spring Garden section of the city Thursday night.

The 16-year-old boy's older brother, identified by police as 21-year-old Maurice Roberts, was also arrested in connection to the carjacking and shooting.

Police say the 16-year-old boy shot and killed Gerard Grandzol, 38, as he got out of his car along the 1500 block of Melon Street just after 8 p.m. Thursday.

The father of two had just returned from an outing at Fairmount Park's Lemon Hill with his 2-year-old daughter and dog when the teen and Roberts, who were both dressed in black, held him up at gunpoint, police said.

Grandzol handed over his wallet, but when the men demanded his car keys, he refused. His daughter was still inside the car.

The teen boy then allegedly opened fire and shot Grandzol twice in the face.

"They wanted the car and he wouldn’t give up the car and they shot him for it," Ryan said Friday afternoon at a brief news conference outside police headquarters.

The gunmen fled the scene on foot. The killing was captured on surveillance video, police sources said.

When first responders arrived, they found Grandzol's daughter crying in the backseat, sources said.

Brendan Fernald, Grandzol's friend and neighbor, rushed over to help and try to keep him alive.

"[I] jumped down and started putting pressure on his wounds. Then, scooping the blood out of his mouth so he could breathe," Fernald said.

Grandzol was rushed to a nearby trauma center where he died about 90 minutes later, police said.

Police identified the teen boy and Roberts as suspects in the shooting. The teen was arrested Saturday and charged with murder. U.S. Marshals also tracked down Roberts in North Jersey. He will be charged after being taken back to Philadelphia, police said.

Ryan described the deadly carjacking as an apparent "crime of opportunity" saying that the men seemed to be passing through the neighborhood when they singled out Grandzol.

A St. Joseph's University alum who was highly involved in the community, Grandzol volunteered for Project HOME, served on a neighborhood organization and belonged to various civic groups.

"We called him the mayor," Fernald said. "He engaged himself with everyone he met. That was remarkable. I'll miss him so much."

Grandzol served as a leader of Special Counsel, a legal staffing recruiting service.

"Gerry was loved by everyone who had the privilege to know him, not just as a colleague, but as a force of nature who loved life. We will always remember him as a leader, philanthropist, proud father, loving husband and good friend," Special Counsel president Laurie Chamberlin said.

Grandzol leaves behind a wife and two children. The family welcomed home a newborn baby girl only five weeks ago.

"He was an amazing dude," said Scott Rudich, the co-founder of Lansdale, Pennsylvania-based Round Guys Brewing where Grandzol would occasionally tend bar.

"My heart is hurting for them, for their family."

Man Tries to Rescue Driver as Vehicle Sinks Into River

Video from a witness captured a Good Samaritan’s brave attempt to rescue a trapped and unconscious driver as his vehicle sank into the Christina River in Delaware. The Good Samaritan survived but the driver was later pronounced dead.

The unidentified, 42-year-old driver exited the riverwalk boardwalk and crashed into the water near the 600 block of S. Madison Street in Wilmington, Delaware around 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Michael PJ, who did not want to reveal his full name, told NBC10 he was eating with his friend at the Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant nearby when they heard the vehicle crash into the river near the waterfront.

Michael and his friend walked over and saw the vehicle partially submerged and slowly descending into the water between the dock and pier area.

“We went over there and it was still wedged in between,” Michael said.

A Good Samaritan who was with his wife and daughter jumped in and attempted to rescue the driver who was unconscious in the driver’s seat, according to Michael.

“He unbuckled him but couldn’t get to him,” he said.

Michael recorded as the vehicle began to sink into the water and the passenger door slammed shut, trapping both the unconscious driver and the Good Samaritan inside. The rescuer’s wife and daughter scream in the video as the vehicle continues to sink. The video shows the Good Samaritan escaping from the vehicle however and getting out of the water as the vehicle becomes fully submerged.

Officials told NBC10 responding officers with the Wilmington Police Marine Boat, Wilmington Fire Department and Delaware State Police Dive Team removed the driver from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics.

Investigators have not yet revealed his identity or an exact cause of death though they don't suspect any foul play was involved. Michael told NBC10 the body was pulled out about an hour after the vehicle crashed into the water. Police have not confirmed this however.

Workers at the Lehigh Valley Zoo safely recaptured a bobcat that escaped her exhibit Saturday.

The female bobcat, named Shishka, managed to squeeze out of her natural exhibit through a barrier surrounding a tree growing inside, zoo officials said. Staff members issued a “code red” and ushered visitors at the zoo to a safe location. Zoo workers then safely recaptured Shishka within 50 feet of her enclosure.

The bobcat was taken to the zoo veterinary facility for an evaluation. They determined she was not injured.

Officials say Shishka’s exhibit will undergo an inspection and safety check.
