PA Airport to Be 1st Since 9/11 to Let Non-Flyers Past TSA

Breaking with a practice that began after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Pittsburgh International Airport will soon allow non-ticketed patrons past its security checkpoints, NBC News reported.

The airport, getting back to the "good-old days" of air travel, will let non-flyers access inside gates, shops, restaurants and artwork year-round. With approval from the Transportation Security Administration, the change will take effect Sept. 5.

Non-flyers will have to check in at a special desk, show a valid photo I.D., have their name checked against a "no fly" list and then, just like regular flyers, go through security.

While the TSA said it supports Pittsburgh's change, it noted that no additional staff has been hired for the change. It also said there are no plans to expand the program.

A massive drug bust in the Summerdale section of Northeast Philadelphia last week led to the arrest of nine suspected drug dealers and $1.5 million worth of heroin, officials said.

Agents working with the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General seized an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 bags of suspected heroin, in addition to 3 to 4 kilograms of unbagged narcotics.

Three Philadelphia police officers and an agent with the attorney general's office were exposed to the drugs and suffered physical reactions. Narcan, an antidote for the reversal of overdoses, was used on them. The four officers are recovering, officials said.

“As I told the neighbors in Summerdale … drug dealing is not a victimless crime,” Attorney General Shapiro said in a statement. “We hear them, we know what they’re going through, and we’ll work around the clock to get the people peddling these poisons out of their community.”

The suspected drug dealers are from the Dominican Republic and currently in custody, officials said. They are being arraigned on various drug related charges.

“Our agents, working with Philadelphia police and the Pennsylvania State Police, got these drug dealers out of Summerdale and took the necessary steps to restore public safety to that neighborhood,” Shapiro said.

    AROUND THE WORLD

Florida Enters Category 4 Hurricane Irma's Forecast Cone: South Florida was placed in the official forecast cone of Hurricane Irma Monday as hurricane watches and warnings were in effect for islands in the Caribbean for the powerful Category 4 storm. Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency for all 67 counties in the state, so that "state, federal and local governments are able to work together and make sure resources are dispersed to local communities as we get prepared for this storm.” "Hurricane Irma is a major and life-threatening storm and Florida must be prepared. Current forecast models have Florida in Irma’s path – potentially impacting millions of Floridians," Scott said in a statement. Early Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Irma reached 150-mph winds and posed a serious threat to the Leeward Islands, where it is expected to hit late Tuesday. The storm could bring storm surges of 6-9 feet and dump as much as 12 inches of rain as it moves through the Caribbean.

Hurricane Relief Drive Raises $1M: Unprecedented flooding from Harvey has created a catastrophe across southeast Texas and parts of Louisiana — leaving behind a swath of destruction that has yet to be fully understood. Harvey's victims will travel a long road to recovery and they need our help getting there. That's why NBC10, Telemundo62 and Comcast teamed up with the American Red Cross to support the victims of Harvey through our Hurricane Relief Drive. For 13 hours Thursday, an army of volunteers — including sports legends and even the Phillie Phanatic — took calls from Harvey Heroes all across the Philadelphia region. Thousands of calls came in and we were able to raise more than $1 million thanks to small donations from individuals and families and large pledges from local companies including Wawa, Parx Casino, NRG, Toyota, and Essity. Man Wearing MAGA Shirt Attacks NJ Anti-Hate Volunteer: Cops

A New Jersey rally against hate inspired by the tragedy in Charlottesville last month was itself the victim of a hate attack, before it could even begin.

Asbury Park Police say 22-year-old Morris May of Scotch Plains was arrested for pepper spraying a rally volunteer making signs Sunday night before the Labor Day rally.

Mays was wearing a T-Shirt that read, "For those about to MAGA we salute you." It also had a picture of Pepe the Frog, which has been adopted by the so-called alt-right movement as a mascot. A person who identified himself as May's brother, but was not arrested, was wearing a Donald Trump T-shirt.

Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Casey said the pair had gone to where volunteers were making signs and gotten into a "verbal argument" with them over politics.

Volunteer Allison Kolarik, who is transgender, said she tried to walk away, but was continually blocked by May, then suddenly pepper sprayed.

She said hate like that has to be "driven into the sea."

When asked why she went ahead and attended the Labor Day Stand Against Hate rally despite the attack, she said "What are you going to do, let it take over? Let people like that win?"

May was charged with two felony counts, aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon, police said.

NJ's Menendez Set for Rare Senate Corruption Trial

The trial of Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., begins on Wednesday, the first time a U.S. senator faces bribery charges in nearly four decades and a case that could affect the balance of power in the Senate, NBC News reported.

Menendez is accused of doing favors for a Florida eye doctor who allegedly overbilled Medicare, getting "private jet rides and vacations in Paris and the Caribbean" in return, according to prosecutors.

Menendez has said he was simply trying to help an old friend, and the trial will test a recent Supreme Court ruling that narrowed the definition of official bribery. The senator's lawyers say nothing he's accused of qualifies as quid pro quo corruption.

Menendez would likely resist calls to resign if he's convicted, and while he could be expelled, that would take a two-thirds vote, something that hasn't been done in 155 years. His successor would be appointed by the governor of New Jersey, currently Republican Chris Christie.
