AROUND THE WORLD
Trump Vows to Win Unseemingly Unwinnable War: President Donald Trump is vowing to win what has seemed to be an unwinnable war. How he plans to do so is still murky despite the months of internal deliberations that ultimately persuaded Trump to stick with a conflict he has long opposed. In a 26-minute address to the nation Monday, Trump alluded to more American troops deploying to Afghanistan, but refused to say how many. He said victory would be well-defined, but outlined only vague benchmarks for success, like dismantling al-Qaida and preventing the Taliban from taking over Afghanistan. He said the U.S. would not offer Afghanistan a "blank check," but provided no specific timetable for the end of an American commitment that has already lasted 16 years. Instead, Trump projected an "I got this" bravado that has become a hallmark of his presidency.

Visually Impaired Friends Celebrate Solar Eclipse: Monday’s solar eclipse was a visual spectacle for millions of people across the country. Yet not everyone experienced the event the same way. NBC10 photojournalist Jim Friedman spoke to two best friends in the Lehigh Valley, one blind and one visually impaired, who still celebrated the historic day. Judy Caruana told NBC10 she’s been blind for her entire life. “I can basically see everything except the message is not getting to the brain because the optic nerve is deteriorated,” she said. Caruana’s best friend Rita Lang, of Whitehall Township, suffers from Retinitis pigmentosa, an eye disease that causes vision impairment. “Basically, so what type of vision I have is what we call a tunnel vision,” Lang said. “I see a pinpoint. So if I’m looking straight ahead that’s all I really see.” Both friends decided to have an eclipse party in Whitehall Monday to experience it together in their own unique way.

A LITTLE SWEETENER
Philly Cop Covers 'Total Eclipse of the Heart': Two things were almost unavoidable leading up to Monday’s solar eclipse: warnings for people to not look directly at it without wearing special glasses and references to Bonnie Tyler’s hit 1983 song, “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Philadelphia Police Captain Sekou Kinebrew managed to combine both in a video that you’ll find hilarious, cringe-worthy or maybe even a mixture of both. Captain Kinebrew showed off his singing and acting chops in the two and half minute clip, which interspersed scenes from the music video, as he covered Tyler’s classic while sporting the special protective glasses and staring dramatically toward the sky. It also featured enough overdramatic posing and pained facial expressions to make the average eighties power ballad enthusiast happy. Read more.
