Carjacker Crashes Stolen Car of Off-Duty SEPTA Worker: Cops

The suspect in the carjacking of an off-duty SEPTA worker as well as an armed robbery was arrested after crashing the stolen vehicle in South Philadelphia, officials said.

The suspect, identified as Marquan Pitts, 24, allegedly carjacked an off-duty SEPTA maintenance worker at gunpoint around 4 a.m. Sunday on 4th and Spring Garden streets. The worker was not injured during the incident.

Pitts then drove the stolen vehicle, a gray Dodge Challenger, into New Jersey at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour and continued down the Atlantic City Expressway to the Farley Service Plaza, investigators said. After getting gas, Pitts allegedly showed his gun to an attendant while claiming to be a police officer.

"I can't even imagine what was going through his mind doing that this morning," said Dominique DeMichael, a witness. "It's crazy."

Pitts then drove back into Philadelphia and tried to travel down the narrow Mercy Street and onto 8th Street, police said. At that point however he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a parked Nissan Altima on South 8th Street early Sunday afternoon, according to investigators. He was apprehended by police a short time later.

"I'm really glad there were no kids or elderly people out here," DeMichael said. "Could have been a lot worse."

Pitts is charged with robbery, impersonating a police officer and other offenses.

Former Phillies Player Darren "Dutch" Daulton Dies at 55

Friends, family and sports fans nationwide are mourning the loss of one of Philadelphia's most beloved players. Former Philadelphia Phillies player Darren "Dutch" Daulton passed away Sunday at the age of 55 after a four-year battle with brain cancer.

Born on January 3, 1962 in Arkansas City, Kansas, Daulton attended Arkansas City (KS) High School. He was selected by the Phillies in the 25th round of the 1980 draft. He was a three-time All-Star during his 14 seasons with the Phillies (1983, 1985-1997), the longest tenure for a catcher in the team's history.

Daulton won a Silver Slugger and led the National League with 109 RBI in 1992. He became the only catcher in Phillies history with two 100-RBI seasons with 109 in 1992 and 105 in 1993.

One of Daulton's greatest seasons was 1993 in which he set Phillies single-season records for a catcher in walks (117), doubles (35), putouts (981) and double plays. He also made 143 starts at catcher that year, the most in Phillies history, and played a pivotal role when the team won the 1993 National League pennant.

Aside from the records he set, Daulton also developed a reputation as one of the toughest players in baseball.

Daulton was traded to the Florida Marlins in 1997 where he spent his final two and a half months of his baseball career. Marlins manager Jim Leyland credited Daulton's leadership in the clubhouse with helping the team win the World Series that year.

During his time with the Phillies, Daulton batted .245 in 1,109 games with 189 doubles, 134 home runs and 567 RBI. He also received the Players Choice Comeback Player of the Year Award, the Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year Award and was inducted into the Reading Baseball Hall of Fame, all in 1997. He was also selected as the starting catcher on the All-Vet Team in 2003 and was inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame in 2010.

“Darren was a true leader of men. The Phillies would not have gone to the 1993 World Series without his leadership,” said Phillies Chairman Emeritus Bill Giles. “In addition to being an outstanding clubhouse leader, he was also a fighter. He battled through five knee operations to become an All-Star. I really enjoyed watching him for 14 years in uniform. Darren was a super human being. His teammates loved him, I loved him like he was one of my own. In fact, he called me ‘Uncle Bill.’”

While Daulton spent most of his adult life in Clearwater, Florida, in 2010 he spent the season in Philadelphia hosting the "Talking Baseball with Dutch" radio show on 97.5 The Fanatic.

In 2013, Daulton's family announced he had a glioma, a tumor that arises from the brain tissue itself and is not spread from cancer anywhere else in the body. He underwent surgery for seven hours on July 1, 2013 at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital to remove the two brain tumors. That same year, his foundation, the Darren Daulton Foundation, which was established in 2011, shifted its mission to raise funds for brain cancer.

"All of us at the Phillies are saddened to hear of Darren's passing. From the day that we drafted him until today, he constantly earned our respect and admiration as both a player and person,” said Phillies Chairman David Montgomery. “Darren was the face of our franchise in the early 1990's.  Jim Fregosi asked so much of him as catcher, clean-up hitter and team leader.  He responded to all three challenges. One of my toughest decisions as team president was to approve his trade to the Marlins in July of 1997.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Amanda, his parents, his brother and his four children. Dutch was truly ‘one of a kind’ and we will dearly miss him."

Daulton is survived by his parents, one brother, his wife and four children. Funeral services for Daulton will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Darren Daulton Foundation Foundation, 1339 Chestnut Street, Suite 500, Philadelphia, PA 19107.

Three teenagers were arrested Sunday night after they allegedly threw bottles at Philadelphia Police officers at the same Philadelphia rec center where a similar incident took place last month, according to investigators.

Police say about 400 teenagers gathered at the Lonnie Young Rec Center on 1100 Chelten Avenue around 7:30 p.m. for a cookout. Some of the teens allegedly began acting disorderly and threw bottles and rocks at the officers.

At least one of the officers was hit by a bottle though he or she was not injured. Police also say two of their vehicles were vandalized.

Police cleared the rec center and activated patrol units and TAC Air to force the teens out of the area. At least three of the teens were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

Police say a similar incident occurred at the same rec center back on July 17 in which a large crowd of teens who gathered for a cookout began throwing items at police officers. Police decided not to arrest anyone during that incident however. Photos on social media advertised Sunday night’s incident at the rec center as “Cookout Pt. 2.”

Philadelphia police are trying to piece together how a 13-year-old boy was shot in the right foot.

The incident happened around 11:30 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Kensington Avenue and East Ontario Street. The 13-year-old told police he had been walking with a friend when he heard a gunshot, looked down and noticed his foot was bleeding.

When police went to investigate the crime scene, they could find no evidence of a shooting. Officials interviewed neighbors, none of whom heard gunshots. Surveillance video also did not show signs of an incident, police said.

“We’re not certain at this time that this 13-year-old boy is telling us the truth about where he shot,” Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

The teen was taken to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition.

No, Coyotes Aren't Running Around Sea Isle's Beaches

0

Everyone knows foxes are the trickiest creatures on the planet. It should be no surprise, then, that they went incognito over the weekend and posed as their canine cousins.

A number of people reported seeing coyotes on the beaches in Sea Isle City, New Jersey.

But local animal control has cleared the air: People were seeing actually spotting foxes, which are part of the local ecosystem and natural inhabitants of New Jersey barrier islands.

Don’t worry — foxes generally do not pose a threat to humans, local officials said. They do, however, carry mange and should be avoided.

Animal control believes the foxes seen over the weekend are a mother and pup. Traps have been set to capture the pair in an effort to transfer them to an animal rehabilitation facility and treated for mange. Traps have been set and will be checked regularly, officials said.

Any sightings of foxes should be reported to Sea Isle City Police Department’s Dispatch Office at (609) 263-4311.

Photo of Suspect Car in Center City Fatal Hit-And-Run

Philadelphia police are still hunting for the driver of a white SUV that allegedly ran over a 53-year-old woman in Center City early Sunday morning and left her die.

The car in question is a white, four-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with black wheel wells and a spare tire on the back.

The Jeep would likely have front-end damage, police said.

Below is a picture of the suspected vehicle:

The driver of the Jeep hit Ann P. Broderick around 3:20 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Race and Watts streets.

Another witness, who did not want to be identified, told NBC10 she was talking to Broderick minutes before the crash.

"We saw her lying in the street dead," she said. "Somebody just left her there like an animal."

The witness said Broderick was going through tough times and was living on the streets prior to her death.

2 NJ Shore School Districts Subpoenaed in Drug Fraud Probe

Prosecutors at the Jersey Shore subpoenaed employee records from two school districts as a probe into potential prescription drug fraud widens.

The Margate City School District and Ventnor School District received the writs Friday from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office requesting information about employees and their health insurance coverage, officials in both cities tell NBC10.

John DiNicola, the Margate City school superintendent, said his district will be turning over the names of all district staff to comply with the order.

Officials with the Ventnor City school district could not immediately be reached for comment.

The subpoenas are similar to ones doled out in recent weeks and months to several Atlantic County municipalities including Margate, Ventnor, and Atlantic City.

County and federal prosecutors are investigating whether municipal employees have been engaged in a scheme involving prescription drugs. Both the FBI and Atlantic County district attorney are conducting parallel investigations.

Records uncovered by NBC10 showed a massive spike in brand name prescription drug costs by Margate City employees — from nearly $714,000 in 2014 to more than $3.3 million in 2015, with only a small increase in the number of prescriptions filled.

So far, no one has been indicted or charged, but police and fire department employees were mentioned in past subpoenas.

Last week, Atlantic County prosecutor Damon Tyler said the probe could involve public employees, pharmaceutical reps or doctors, and have hundreds of defendants.

Images from the city of Salisbury Twitter account showed downed trees and flipped over cars. Police and fire crews have been sent to multiple locations.

While the damage appeared extensive, there were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities. Crews and residents are still dealing with the aftermath.

There was no tornado warning or watch for the Salisbury area issued by the National Weather Service.

James Foster, a meteorological technician with the National Weather Service, told The Daily Times of Salisbury it is sending investigators to confirm whether a tornado touched down.

While looking at some damage, Salisbury Mayor Jake Day said, "It's not good here."

Man Flees After Running Woman Over With Dirt Bike

The search is on for a dirt bike rider who ran over a woman and dragged her several feet before fleeing the scene on foot in Pleasantville, New Jersey over the weekend.

The 27-year-old Galloway Township woman had just left a fried chicken restaurant on Main Street around 6:30 p.m. Saturday and was walking on the sidewalk when she was knocked to the ground and dragged at least 75 feet by a man on a dirt bike. The rider then fled the scene on foot, leaving the woman and his dirt bike behind. The hit-and-run crash was captured on surveillance video.

“I just couldn’t believe,” said Monique Burton, who witnessed the crash. “A human being. It wasn’t no animal. It was a person.”

The woman was taken to the hospital where she is being treated for serious head injuries and internal injuries.

The hit-and run comes less than two months after NBC10 first reported about Pleasantville’s ongoing issues with off-road dirt bikers casing problems on the streets, where it's illegal to ride. Police say the hit-and-run biker, who had a mask covering part of his face, rode onto the sidewalk to avoid traffic that was stopped at a light.

“This is akin to us as taking out a firearm and shooting somebody that happens to be standing on the sidewalk that has nothing to do with whatever business you’re conducting,” said Pleasantville Police Captain Matthew Hartman.

Pleasantville officials say they’ve been in touch with the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office and state agencies to help with a more aggressive crackdown on the problem that will include locating and confiscating the bikes if necessary and taking action against the riders.

“It’s something we’ve been working on,” Captain Hartman said. “Unfortunately something like this happens and it basically jumpstarts everything and moves it forward.”

If you have any information on the incident, please call Pleasantville Police.
