A dramatic rescue unfolded Thursday morning in Delaware’s Brandywine River.

Wilmington firefighters were returning from a call around 6:30 A.M. when they noticed a man in distress stuck in the middle of the river, authorities said.

Wilmington’s rescue squad was called to the scene, where they deployed into the river to rescue the man. The rescue team got him into a life jacket and attached a tag line to bring him back to shore.

The rescue took approximately 20 minutes while 24 first responders were on the scene. The man was transported to Wilmington Hospital.

Mayor Jim Kenney has endorsed longtime criminal defense attorney Larry Krasner in Philadelphia's race for District Attorney.

Kenney said Krasner "has a history of standing up for the underdog" and is"determined and tenacious fighter and a long-time advocate for the homeless and those powerless to defend themselves."

Krasner has never worked as prosecutor, but has been a longtime defense attorney in Philadelphia. He fought strongly against mass incarceration and the death penalty, and defended Black Lives Matter and Occupy Philadelphia protesters.

Krasner emerged out of a crowded field and won the Democratic primary on May 16 and will square off against Republican nominee Beth Grossman.

The two will fight to succeed disgraced District Attorney Seth Williams. Last month, Williams pleaded guilty to accepting a bribes and gifts while in office and immediately resigned. He is set to be sentenced in October.

After Williams' resignation, Kelley Hodge was sworn in as interim DA on July 24, the city's first female African-American in the position. Hodge is a former prosecutor and will serve until her successor takes office in January.

Who becomes the next DA will be decided in November's general election.

Decorative iPhone cases sold at Victoria's Secret, Nordstrom Rack and other stores have been recalled by their manufacturer because a liquid glitter inside the cases can cause skin irritation and chemical burns.

MixBin Electronics recalled 24 styles of cases for iPhone 6, 6S, and 7. Over 260,000 affected cases were sold at websites and stores for Victoria's Secret, Nordstrom Rack, Amazon, Tory Burch, Henri Bendel and MixBin.

Worldwide, 24 cases have been reported of the liquid inside the cases causing skin irriation or chemical burns, including 19 cases in the U.S., according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

One consumer reported permanent scarring from a chemical burn, and another reported chemical burns and swelling to her leg, face, neck, chest, upper body and hands.

Only fluid released from a cracked or broken case may cause skin irritation. If you come into contact with the liquid glitter, immediately wash affected areas with warm soapy water and seek medical attention if irritation continues.

A New Jersey man and Delaware teen are both charged in the death of a woman who was found by her father inside a Winslow Township farmhouse.

Tyler Dralle, 20, of Vineland and a 17-year-old New Castle boy are both charged in the murder of Deanna Scordo, 45. Police say their motive was burglary.

Winslow Township Police responded to a report of gunshots inside a farmhouse on the 700 block of Baridmore Avenue around 3:50 a.m. back on June 25. In a 911 call obtained by NBC10, Scordo's father told the dispatcher two men wearing black hoods broke into the home, shot his daughter and left her in a corner.

"My daughter is laying on the floor," he told the dispatcher.

"And she's shot?" the dispatcher asked.

"Yes," he replied.

When police arrived at the home they found Scordo on the floor suffering from gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Camden County Prosecutor's Office and Winslow Township Police detectives pursued several tips and leads after Scordo's death. They later identified Dralle and the 17-year-old as the suspects.

Dralle was charged on Monday and arrested at his home without incident on Tuesday. He was remanded to the Camden County Jail. The New Castle teen was arrested and charged Wednesday.

Dralle is set to appear in front of a judge for a pretrial hearing Friday.

Two men drowned at beaches in Sea Isle City, New Jersey in two separate incidents this week.

The first incident occurred Monday around 2:45 p.m. Sea Isle City Police officers responded to the 86th Street beach for a report of a medical emergency in the water. When they arrived they found lifeguards and Good Samaritans performing CPR on Brian Zwaan, 58, of Berwyn, Pennsylvania.

Zwaan was taken to the Cape Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 4:40 p.m. Officials determined he died from head and neck injuries complicated by drowning.

The second incident occurred Wednesday around 1:40 p.m. at the 59th Street beach. Witnesses say a 74-year-old man was knocked over by a large wave and remained underwater. Nearby swimmers and the Sea Isle Beach Patrol found the man and pulled him up on the beach. They then performed CPR on him with help from police officers.

The man was taken to the Atlantic City Medical Center by helicopter. He was later pronounced dead Thursday morning. Officials are withholding his identity until his family is notified.

Both deaths were ruled accidental.

Suicide Among Teen Girls Hit 40-Year High

$

0

Suicide among teen girls between the ages of 15 and 19 years old hit a 40-year high, according to new data released by the National Center for Health Statistics.

Male teens, by comparison, experienced an increase in suicides from the mid-1980s to mid-1990s.

The new data from 2015, which is the most recent data available, comes on the heels of sentencing for Michelle Carter, who was 17 years old when she urged her 18-year-old boyfriend to kill himself. Conrad Roy Jr. died by intentional carbon monoxide poisoning in 2014.

Academic pressure, cyberbullying and undiagnosed mental disorders could offer a partial explanation of why a young person might consider or attempt suicide, according to experts. This is especially true of young people who are gay, trans or questioning.

"At times, 11-year-olds and 12-year-olds say … 'If I don’t get straight A’s in seventh grade, I’m not going to get into AP courses in ninth grade … and I’m not going to get into a good college. If I don’t get into a good college, I’m going to be homeless,'" Dr. Tami Benton, psychiatrist-in-chief at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, told NBC10 earlier this year for our groundbreaking series Preventing Suicide: Breaking the Silence.

In 2015, more than 44,000 people took their own lives, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Overall, suicide is the second-leading cause of death for people between the ages of 10 and 34. More than one million people attempt suicide every year.

Men are more likely to die by suicide, but women are more likely to attempt it, the CDC reported. The disparity comes down to method: men gravitate towards suicide by firearms and hanging while women turn to overdosing. The latter has a higher chance of reversal with timely medical attention.

Recently, researchers from San Diego State University found that for almost three weeks after Netflix show "13 Reasons Why" debuted, there was an uptick in Google searches involving the word "suicide." Searches included methods, hotlines and prevention. The show depicts the suicide of a teen girl and her blaming specific people for it.

The study did not provide a definitive link between actual suicides and the Netflix series.

A police officer shot a man at a Camden County, New Jersey senior housing facility after he allegedly threatened a woman with a meat cleaver.

Chesilhurst Police responded to a 911 call for a disturbance at the B’nai B'rith Chesilhust House in Chesilhurst, New Jersey around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. Two women told the dispatcher that a man with a butcher knife was threatening them in the management office.

According to police, one woman was able to escape while the other was held hostage by the man, identified by investigators as Daniel McOsker, a resident at the facility in his 60s.

Police say they found McOsker holding a meat cleaver in his apartment on another floor when they arrived. They ordered McOsker to drop the weapon and shot him once in the leg when he allegedly failed to do so.

He currently is being treated at Cooper University Hospital for the gunshot wound. He is charged with making terroristic threats.

Chesilhurst Police have placed the officer involved in the shooting on administrative leave pending the investigation.

    AROUND THE WORLD

Congress Recesses With Much Undone, Tensions with Trump: Lawmakers scattered for their summer recess Thursday, leaving behind a slim record of achievements and a steaming President Donald Trump. The president is angry about what the Republican-led Congress couldn't do — repeal Obamacare — as well as one of the few things it did: approve a Russia sanctions bill he detests. So Republican senators leave Washington with simmering tensions between them and the White House now out in public for all to see. They'll face voters back home who have cause for frustration about an unproductive Congress led by a party given over to infighting. Lamenting poor relations with Russia, Trump sniped over Twitter on Thursday, "You can thank Congress, the same people that can't even give us HCare!” "I was shocked by that," responded Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Pat Toomey, who is not one for criticizing Trump publicly. "Relations with  Russia are in a bad place, and it's entirely because of Vladimir Putin, it's not because of Congress."
