After Whale of a Wait, 3 N.J. Fisherman Win $2M in Tourney

Three Jersey guys thought pulling the 236-pound tuna onto their boat last year during a fishing tournament was hard enough.

On the first day of the 2016 White Marlin Open, they hit a log and broke the steering system aboard Damien Romeo’s boat. They had to spend the first two days of the tournament getting the rig back in order.

Even after hooking and gaffing the tuna, the boat broke down again, and they had to be towed back to the shore.

Yet they never realized the real fight would come in securing the prize money for the trophy fish.

But it was worth the whale of a wait: Last week, nearly a year after the tournament was held last July off the Maryland coast, Rich Kosztyu, Brian Suschke and Damien Romeo were awarded $2 million for the top prize in the prestigious event.

“It's been a long year waiting for it to be resolved, ” Romeo said.

A federal judge ruled in June that the original winner be disqualified because he started fishing prior to the official beginning of the tournament, according to DelMarVaNow. Tournament officials decided this week that the New Jersey fishermen were the true winners.

Kosztyu, the man on the rod when the tuna was hooked, is a Hamilton, Mercer County, firefighter. He and the other two, who are also from Mercer County, had already been awarded $767,000 for the tuna, which they claim to be the largest prize in history for a tuna.

“We were very happy we had [the tuna] in the first place,” Romeo said.

"A week and a half later, we were fishing in another tournament and got a phone call that the white marlin had been disqualified,” Romeo said.

The controversy first arose when Phillip Heasley of Naples, Florida, was originally declared the winner of the 2016 White Marlin Open Tournament, reeling in a 76.5 pound White Marlin- the prized catch.

However, the week following the competition, officials scrutinized the report Heasley and his crew filed when they caught the Marlin.

Officials determined the crew had written and erased the time of their catch — from 8:15 a.m. to 9:05 a.m. — so the catch wouldn’t violate tournament rules, which says fishing begins at 8:30 a.m.

Officials then said that Heasley and all the crew members failed polygraph tests, which the competition requires when disputes involve more than $50,000 in winnings.

“We don’t fish for work, we fish for the love of fishing,” Brian Suschke, a Trenton police sergeant, said. “Group fishing is how we all met, it’s been great. The guys are great, we all have positive attitudes on the boat. They’re two of my best friends.”

Suschke grew up on the water. When he was still in diapers, his father would take him out on the family’s charter boat to reel in a daily catch.

“On the weekends, that’s all we did,” Suschke said.

With the summer fishing season in full swing, the crew is happy to just be back out there, with no distractions hanging over them.

“We’re excited to put this behind us. It couldn’t have happened at a better time,” Suschke said about the court’s decision and subsequent ruling by the tournament officials.

The trio will be back at Maryland's White Marlin Open in Aug. 7-11 to defend their title.

“There’s always a little bit of luck involved," Romeo said.

Target Dropping 2 of Its Famous Brands, Adding 12 Others

Target lovers soon will have to say goodbye to two of the chain's famous brands.

As part of a partial overhaul of its apparel, accessories and home departments, Target will phase out its well-known Merona line for women and men, as well as the men’s line of Mossimo, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The move is meant to make room for multiple new brands heading to Target in the next 18 months.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Target executives felt Merona and Mossimo have "grown too big and homogenized to garner shoppers’ affection." They will be replaced by brands with "defined personality and purpose," they said.

Mark Tritton, Target’s chief merchandising officer, told the publication he hopes two brands in particular -- A New Day clothing line for women and Goodfellow & Co menswear -- will "make an emotional connection with shoppers, something Merona never was able to do."

Other examples of the more than 12 new brands include the athleisure-inspired JoyLab and home brand Project 62.

The display of these items will be different too, The Wall Street Journal reports, with more lighting and displays of clothes on mannequins.

Target gave The Wall Street Journal a peek into what the new brands look like.

A toddler is recovering after she fell out of a window in West Philadelphia Saturday night.

Police say the 2-year-old girl was playing by herself in a room inside her home on the 800 block of Markoe Street while her mother was in another room at 7:38 p.m. The child then fell through a second floor window that did not have a screen and landed on the concrete below. The girl's mother heard screams and rushed to the room before she saw her daughter outside on the ground.

Police are investigating the incident but don't believe there was any foul play. The girl was taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where she is currently in stable condition.

"Our detectives from Special Victims will be looking into this but right now it doesn't appear to have any signs of foul play," Philadelphia Police Captain George Fuchs said. "But that's for our detectives to look into."

A 33-year-old Delaware woman died early Sunday when her sports utility vehicle crashed through the front of a New Castle animal shelter.

Latoya Cooper, identified by family at the scene, died about 12:15 a.m. Investigators did not immediately give a cause for the crash.

Cooper and three cats at the Brandywine Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal shelter on South Street may have died from smoke and fire that broke out in the moments after the crash.

Cooper's mother came to the crash scene a few hours later and tearfully remembered her daughter, who she said is a mother of five.

"I felt something at two o'clock in the morning. I felt some kind of pain," Cooper's mother said. "Maybe it was her."

Nearly 100 other animals were displaced after the shelter was deemed uninhabitable. SPCA officials said the animals are being temporarily housed in other nearby shelters.

"The BVSPCA needs the community’s help during this crisis," the shelter said in a statement. "Anyone who has been thinking of adopting should visit one of the other BVSPCA adoption locations: the Georgetown, DE, Campus; the PetSmart Everyday Adoption Center in Dover, DE; or the West Chester, PA. Campus, Sunday hours are 10am to 5pm. Financial donations are also needed to help with the additional cost to care for the animals and the damage to the building."

Philly Congressman to Fight Trump's 'Cyber-Security' Plan

A congressman from Northeast Philadelphia said he would propose legislation later this week to prevent a proposal by President Donald Trump to form "an impenetrable Cyber Security unit" with Russia.

U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle, a Democrat who returned Saturday night from a trip to Hamburg, Germany, for the G-20 Summit, said in a statement that he will offer a bill to prevent the president's proposal, which Trump mentioned in a series of tweets Sunday morning.

Trump also returned Saturday evening from Hamburg.

Boyle said in a statement that when he returned to Capitol Hill this week, he would submit a bill to "prohibit the United States from participating in any type joint working group with Russia on cybersecurity efforts."

The House is off Monday, but reconvenes several committees starting Tuesday.

"Hiring Mr. Putin to protect our electoral process is like a group of homeowners hiring a security guard to protect them after that individual has broken into their homes," Boyle said in the statement.

The second-term congressman wasn't the only one to issue strongly-worded metaphors about such a deal between the United States and Russia in light of the findings by American intelligence agencies regarding Russia's hacking efforts during the 2016 presidential election.
