Social Media Buzzes After Mumia Attorney Rejection

The U.S. Senate blocked President Barack Obama's pick to oversee the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division yesterday. The rejection came in large part due to Debo Adegile's role as a defense attorney in the Mumia Abu-Jamal case.

Abu-Jamal was convicted of killing Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner during a routine traffic stop in 1981. Faulkner's wife, Maureen, petitioned to have the nomination blocked. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., read a letter from Mrs. Faulkner just before the vote on the Senate floor. The controversial nomination was only narrowly defeated with a 47-52 vote.

The day after Adegile was rejected by the Senate, reaction on social media was mixed. Even Philadelphia Distrct Attorney Seth Williams jumped into the fray on Twitter after City Council attorney Jennifer Kates tweeted at him.

Nutter's Budget Obstacles

Following the presentation of Mayor Michael Nutter's budget, city council is left wondering, is the budget realistic?

Nutter Proposes New Money for L&I, Libraries in 2015

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter plans to inject millions of dollars into several city departments in 2015, including hiring more staff to focus on demolitions and inspections across the city.

More importantly, he made it clear that the budget comes with no increase in taxes.

"The budget proposed no tax increases for the city's General Fund," said Mayor Nutter. "Let me repeat that, there are no tax increases for the general fund in our city budget proposal."

The mayor outlined his budget proposal Thursday morning before city council inside City Hall while unions protested outside.

In the address, Nutter pushed for $2 million in additional dollars for the Department of Licenses & Inspections. With that money, the department would hire 31 new employees to focus on demolitions and inspections in the wake of the building collapse on Market Street last June.

The mayor is also proposing a $2.5 million increase to the Free Library of Philadelphia's budget. This would allow 39 city libraries to open on Saturdays.

He also pushed for $15 million for the Departments of Parks and Recreation to fund improvements to city facilities and $16 million for the Streets Department for new pavement in neighborhoods throughout the city.

Unlike last year where the address was open to the public, access to council chambers was limited.

In an email to councilmembers and their staff, Council President Darrell Clarke warned "only persons on the official list will be granted access to council chambers during the mayor's budget address."

Last year, Nutter had to suspend his 2014 budget address after union members, upset over drawn out collective bargaining talks, staged a protest in the council chambers during the speech. They used whistles and shouting to drown out the mayor. The address had to be suspended and moved to a private room.

Nutter recently signed an agreement with the city's white collar union, District Council 47. However, officials are still negotiating with the blue collar union, District Council 33.

"I have said many times that I want contracts with all of our municipal unions -- and I know City Council feels the same way," said Nutter. "...But the agreements in my view have to be fair both to the financial interests of our citizens and our public servants."

The Mayor continued his address by announcing his plan to set aside more than $44.3 million for future labor contract agreements.

"I am hopeful that all of our union leaders understand that my Administration wants fair multi-year contracts with all of our union employees. But fair contracts must include work rule changes, healthcare cost savings and most importantly, pension reform."

Nutter's hopefulness for union negotiations also carried into his hopefulness that the general assembly will authorize a $2-per-pack cigarette tax, one that has already been approved by City Council.

The cigarette tax, Nutter says, will help meet the school district's latest request for $75 million in city funds.

Man Escapes Facility, Found Dead

A family wants answers after their elderly relative was found dead in the parking lot of the assisted living facility where he's lived for the past three years.

Police say that 87-year-old Lawrence Bollettini died in the bitter cold Wednesday morning after he slipped away from Arden Courts, an assisted living facility in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

Detectives tell NBC10's Nefertiti Jaquez that an employee was conducting routine checks when they realized the patient, who suffers from dementia, wasn't in his room.

Police say staff member searched the building from top to bottom, but it wasn't until two hours later, around 6 a.m., that Bollettini's lifeless body was found face down in the parking lot of the facility by another employee who called 911.

Now, police and the victim's family want to know how Bollettini managed to slip away undetected from a facility that is staffed 24 hours a day, especially because you need a key-pass to get in and out of the building.

A representative with Arden Courts released this statement:

"The center is conducting an investigation into the matter including checking our security systems and procedures and is cooperating with the proper authorities."

An investigation is underway.

Men Shoot Up Parked Cars

Several residents in one city neighborhood were left picking up the pieces after gunfire erupted overnight leaving several cars damaged.

Nearly two dozen shots rang out shortly before midnight along the 2900 block of N 13th Street in North Philadelphia -- that’s a couple of blocks from SEPTA’s and Amtrak’s North Philadelphia train station.

Two officers patrolling the area after recent gun violence spotted two men firing in the general direction of their vehicle, according to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

“It appeared from what they heard and the muzzle flash that these individuals were shooting… towards the police vehicle,” said Small.

Police immediately responded and were able to nab one of the alleged shooters about two blocks away. That 19-year-old was taken in for question.

Amazingly no one appeared to be hurt.

“We know that at least 21 shots were fired form semi-automatic guns,” said Small. “Police also recovered two semi-automatic handguns both of which were under two separate cars.”

A woman parking her van at the time left her van running and ran from the scene after two bullets struck her windshield. She was shaken but not injured, according to police.

In total, six parked vehicles were struck by bullets. One car was struck nine times, according to investigators. The bullets went through that windshield and hanging air freshner.

Police didn’t say exactly why the men were shooting. They also didn’t say if the men were shooting at each other or at another intended target.

Small said the officers were lucky not to be struck and that the officers' quick actions got one alleged shooter and two guns off the streets.

The search for the second alleged shooter continued Friday morning.

Hit-&-Run 'John Doe' Identified

After asking for the public's help, a man who was struck and critically hurt late Thursday night in Philadelphia’s Roxborough neighborhood was identified Friday morning.

Following the crash along the 400 block of Domino Lane (near Ridge Avenue) around 10:30 p.m. police were left not only looking for the hit-and-run driver but also trying to identify the "John Doe" left in critical condition with head injuries at Einstein Hospital bed.

Philadelphia Police released a photo of the victim in hopes someone recognized him. The man didn’t have a wallet or identification on him when he was found along the side of Domino Lane.

Just hours after releasing the photo, police announced that they knew who the man is. Investigators did not name the 53-year-old man since he remained hospitalized as the victim of a crime.

It wasn't clear where the man was walking at the time he was struck.
