Funeral for Marine Who Was Killed Trying to Stop Robbery

Funeral information has been released for a U.S. Marine veteran who was gunned down last week while trying to stop an attempted robbery.

A viewing for Howard Robert White, 47, will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Whiting Funeral Home on the 5800 block of North 5th Street. It will be followed by a funeral service at 6 p.m. and a burial at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, Pennsylvania.

During the early morning hours of June 29, White was shot in the head and torso by a man who apparently attempted to hold up a bar at 5th and Spencer streets in Philadelphia's Olney neighborhood, police said.

It was just before 1 a.m. when the suspect, a yet to be identified 25-year-old man from North Philadelphia, pulled up to the Green Parrot Tavern along N. 5th Street.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said the man then opened fire on White and a friend who were standing on the sidewalk. Only White was hit. He died in the street, Small said.

"I heard six or seven times," Yu Choi, who lives near where the shooting took place, told NBC10. "Boom, boom, boom, boom."

The gunman fled following the shooting. White's friend and police, who were patrolling nearby and heard the shooting, gave chase to the 6100 block of N. 6th Street where the suspect broke through a back door of a home.

Javier Vasquez Sr. was sleeping in a bedroom with his wife inside the home when the suspect went inside.

"She screamed, 'Somebody is in the house!'" Vasquez Sr. said.

Vasquez Sr. chased the man and confronted him in the kitchen.

"I started struggling with him," Vasquez Sr. said. "Grabbed the gun. I grabbed his wrist. I grabbed his hair and I tried to hold him."

Vasquez Sr.'s son, 23-year-old Javier Vasquez Jr., wasn't far behind.

"I can't really see without my glasses," Vasquez Jr. said. "I'm pretty blind so I saw them struggling. I didn't know what was in his hand. I saw my dad struggling so the first thing I can do is get him off my dad."

Vasquez Jr. bodyslammed the suspect and pinned him down until police arrived.

Vasquez Sr. and the suspect suffered injuries to their heads and faces. Paramedics took both to Albert Einstein Medical Center for treatment.

Homicide detectives spent Thursday morning questioning witnesses at police headquarters.

White lived about a block from the bar where he was killed. His family tells NBC10 he was injured while overseas when his military vehicle was hit, but he survived. They are in disbelief he came back to Philadelphia only to be gunned down so close to home.

Before his death, White talked about returning overseas. White's cousin Harold Holland called him a "father figure."

"He was a good dude. He ain't mess with nobody....peaceful man."

White's other cousin, Melinda Gordon, called him a hero.

"He died a hero," she said. "He served his country and he continued to serve up until the day that he went to heaven."

‘It Was a Hate Crime’: Dad of Slain Girl Speaks Out

A day after an arrest was made, the father of an 18-year-old girl who was killed in an apparent road rage shooting is speaking out and demanding answers.

“We’re still upset and angry and we still want answers as to why this happened to our daughter,” Rodney Roberson said.

Roberson’s daughter Bianca Roberson was driving on Route 100 in Chester County on June 28. As she tried to merge into a single lane, a driver of a red pickup truck identified by police as David Desper, 28, also tried to merge, investigators said. Desper then allegedly pulled out a .40 caliber handgun and opened fire, shooting Roberson in the head before fleeing the scene. Roberson died instantly.

After a four-day manhunt that stretched across New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania, Desper turned himself in to police early Sunday morning.

While investigators have said they believe Desper shot Bianca in a fit of road rage, her father believes he had a different motivation.

“To shoot her in the head. It wasn’t road rage,” Rodney Roberson said. “To me it was a hate crime.”

For now, Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan hasn’t said the crime was racially motivated. Officials still continue to investigate why the shooting occurred however.

“I want them to throw the book at this guy,” Rodney Roberson said. “Throw him under the jail. He took my daughter.”

Investigators collected evidence at Desper’s home in Trainer, Pennsylvania. Police are also going through thousands of tips.

Roberson told NBC10 he had no indication his daughter was in trouble before she was shot and killed. He also said she had driven down that stretch of Route 100 several times and wasn’t aggressive enough to ride side by side with another driver.

“My daughter is too scary to do anything like that,” he said. “She wouldn’t have done that.”

A roadside memorial made up of flowers and keepsakes was created at the mile marker where Bianca was killed. The teen girl would have attended Jacksonville University in the fall. Bianca's older brother died of heart disease in 2013 at the age of 22. A GoFundMe was created to raise money for her family.

Child-Sized Coffin With Organs Inside Found on Philly Street

A child-sized coffin turned up in the middle of a North Philadelphia street with the organs of a small child or infant inside.

The grisly discovery was made around 9:15 p.m. Monday along Clearfield Avenue near N 30th Street, Philadelphia police said.

When officers opened the coffin they found a medical bag with what appeared to be organs inside. The medical examiner later confirmed that there were human organs, police said.

Investigators believe the painted white coffin was built for a child around 1 years old. They weren’t certain if the coffin was ever buried.

A cemetery is nearby but police didn’t find any immediate connection to the coffin. K-9 cadaver dogs would be used to search for any recently dug up graves, police said.

Detectives and the medical examiner conducted a joint investigation in hopes of unearthing more clues.
