A bicycle officer in training took quite a spill during a four-day workout program led by Upper Darby police.

Officer Anthony Devine of the Elkton, Maryland Police Department was racing through a creek when he lost control of the cycle. Devine went flipping through the air, landing on his back in the water.

Cameras set up by the instructors caught the epic spill from multiple angles. The Upper Darby Police Department included the episode as part of a video highlighting the training program.

Devine wasn't injured in the fall though this pride was most likely bruised.

The wipeout earned Devine the Tigger Award, which is given to the student who bounces highest and farthest during the training.

Delco Unveils New Wheels Battle Opioid Crisis

A new tool to battle the opioid crisis was unveiled in Delaware County Friday.

Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan and Councilman Dave White —both members of the Delco Heroin Task Force — showcased the new Delco Drug Collection Van and Mobile Drug Drop Boxes.

To prevent abuse of prescription drugs, they’re going right to resident's homes to safely collect and dispose of old and expired medications.

“We believe that this unit is not only the first here in Delaware County, but we believe it’s the first in the state of Pennsylvania,” said Whelan said.

It’s effort designed to combat an epidemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 89 people die every day from opioid related overdoses in the U.S. Delaware County alone has already endured 91 opioid related deaths this year.

"We learned that people didn’t go right to heroin. They often started with pills," White said.

Studies have shown that household pharmaceuticals have become a supply choice for users and dealers. Many obtain the drugs, such as OxyCotin and Percocet, from family or friends.

“Prescription drugs are often the target of theft and misuse. We know that young people are becoming addicted to opioids by first taking a prescription drug which they get from medicine cabinets of their parents, their grandparents and friends,” Whelan said.

To help keep these drugs out of the wrong hands, the mobile drug collection unit will be stationed at following Delco events:

June 29, July 27, August 13: Delco Summer Concert Series

August 1: Springfield Township Night Out, Marple Township Night Out

Organizations and businesses can also schedule the van to come right to them for no charge. To do so, they must contact the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office.

The county’s efforts also include 40 secure medicine drop boxes at almost all police departments.

“It’s a battle that goes on every day, and we fight it every day. It’s a battle that we fight the same way a drug addict that wants to recover fights. He takes it day by day.”

A 33-year-old woman was found lying in the grass, beaten and stabbed to death, near Dobbins High School in North Philadelphia early Saturday morning.

She had multiple knife wounds on her legs leading up to her chest. Her pants were down around her ankles and her belongings were scattered throughout the scene, indicating a struggle ensued, police said.

First responders arrived at the scene near 21st Street and Lehigh Avenue around 3 a.m. after a passerby spotted the victim.

“Her hands were covered in blood,” said Capt. Drew Techner. “This was a very brutal, savage attack. Somebody really wanted to make sure that she suffered and was killed.”

Police suspect the attack was sexual in nature, they said.

Officials are still combing the scene and looking for a suspect.

Weather officials have confirmed that a tornado touched down in Pennsylvania during Friday's storms, causing some property damage but no reported injuries.

The National Weather Service reports that the EF-1 tornado touched down shortly before 3:30 p.m. Friday near Lone Pine in Washington County in western Pennsylvania.

Forecasters said the storm carried maximum winds of 90 mph and traveled for almost two and one-half miles, snapping and stripping many trees, tearing the roof off a porch and partially lifting off a garage roof while tearing shingles from other homes. Deck furniture was also blown aloft and into other properties.

The weather service office in Pittsburgh said it's the 12th confirmed tornado in Washington County since 1950 and the third in the last five years.   [[430556163, C]]

32 Years Later, Philadelphia Commemorates MOVE Bombing

Residents and survivors of a West Philadelphia bombing that killed 11 people, including five children, in 1985 gathered near Cobbs Creek Parkway and Osage Avenue Saturday afternoon to commemorate the solemn occasion.

The bombing by Pennsylvania State Police against members of the MOVE activist group destroyed 61 homes at the time, and continues to define a marginalized section of the city.

Those who gathered for the unveiling of a temporary marker called for greater social justice and a demand that the city acknowledge what happened 32 years ago.

MOVE, short for The Movement, started in the late 1960s as a backlash to modernity. Members changed their last names to Africa - as a symbol of returning to their origins - and swore off modern conveniences. They also followed a strict 800-page manifesto and homeschooled their children.

By the 1970s, MOVE and Philadelphia police developed a contentious, and sometimes violent, relationship. MOVE members claimed they were regularly harassed, and police considered them a public nuisance, BillyPenn reported. By then the group had graduated to building their own explosives and were under investigation by the FBI.

MOVE was kicked out of its initial commune, which was located in Poweltown Village, and relocated to the 6200 block of Osage Avenue in 1980. Five years later on May 13, police barricaded the home and demanded the group’s immediate removal. Shots were fired, tear gas thrown. Later in the day, a helicopter dropped a bomb on the house and killed 11 MOVE members.

One of the survivors, Ramona Africa, spoke at Saturday’s dedication ceremony. She was joined by students from the Jubilee School, which won a petition to create the marker.

"We are very clear on the fact that what happened ... had nothing to do with Osage residents," she said.
