Two New Jersey State Troopers rescued a 2-year-old boy and a puppy after the child's grandmother accidentally locked the duo inside with her keys Sunday as temperatures topped 90 degrees across the tri-state

New Jersey State Police say the woman had put her grandson and the dog in the car after visiting some place in Hammonton Township's Batsto Village and went around to the driver's side to get in herself when she realized her keys were on the passenger seat and the doors were locked.

The woman frantically called 911, authorities say. Troopers Jacob Sherry and Steven Hodge responded and immediately noticed the child was sweating.

Hodge broke the window and Sherry pulled out the child and dog.

The child was evaluated as a precaution; his vital signs were normal and he was not in distress, authorities say. The dog also appeared to be OK.

"The appreciative grandmother taught us all a very valuable lesson: Secure your keys before placing children and animals in cars," NJSP posted on Facebook.

TODAY'S TOP STORY

After 4 Days and Deadlock, No Verdict Reached in Bill Cosby Trial: A jury weighing the fate of comedian Bill Cosby in his sexual assault trial remained deadlocked Thursday  night ending a fourth day of deliberations without a resolution. Around 8:45 p.m., Common Pleas Judge Scott O'Neill told the jurors to head home for the night and return Friday morning to continue discussing the case. Cosby smiled, but didn't comment as he left the Norristown, Pennsylvania courthouse, he and his entourage's path lit by the glow of TV camera lights. Earlier in the day, the jury told O'Neill they could not come to a unanimous decision on any of the three counts of aggravated indecent assault levied against Cosby. He told them to keep on trying, sending the talks into the night. So far, they've logged 40 hours and 26 minutes of deliberations, county officials said. O'Neill also denied a defense mistrial motion after the jury's revelation.

Man Who Robbed Bank to Avoid Wife Sentenced to Home Confinement: A 70-year-old Kansas man who said he robbed a Kansas City bank so he could get away from his wife was sentenced Tuesday to six months of home confinement. A federal judge also sentenced Lawrence John Ripple to three years of supervised probation, including 50 hours of community service, the Kansas City Star reports. Ripple went to the Bank of Labor — a block from police headquarters — last September. He gave a note to a teller saying he had a gun and was demanding money. After the teller handed him the cash, Ripple waited for police. Court records indicate Ripple wrote the robbery note in front of his wife and told her he would rather be in jail than at home. Ripple told the judge Tuesday that heart surgery left him depressed and unlike himself before he robbed the bank. He had no criminal record, was a good father to four step-children and was in a stable relationship with his wife. Ripple's public defender said he has since been properly diagnosed, is on proper medication and feels like his normal self again, the Kansas City Star reports.

5 Sets of Pennsylvania Twins Graduate at Same Time: On Friday, 10 Carbondale Area High School students, each a twin, will walk the stage for their diplomas. As high school seniors around the region prepare for graduation this month, Friday may mark the last accomplishment the twins will have to share with each other. The high number of twin sets seems to have some precedent at Carbondale Area. There are eight fraternal twins this year: Alexandra and Maresa Artone, 18; Kati and Kenny Cotton, 18; Genna and Zachary McDonough, 18; and Devin and Patrick Smith, 18. And, there are two identical twins: Alaina and Alyssa Gerek, 17. High school secretary Melissa Regal's husband, Frank Regal, was a twin. When he and his sister, Brenda Regal Cominsky, graduated in 1983, they were among six sets of twins. Read more.

Two people found shot to death on a driveway in Roselle Tuesday afternoon was an apparent murder-suicide, authorities said.

The victim was identified as 22-year-old Anishalee Cortes of Newark, and the shooter as 49-year-old Dominick Richards of Roselle.

Richards approached Cortes in the driveway of his home on Chestnut Street and shot her before shooting himself, prosecutors said.

A handgun was recovered from the scene, officials said.

Newark authorities said Richards was arrested, then released from jail in April for assaulting Cortes at gunpoint. Detectives seized a Glock handgun from his residence at the time, officials said.

“Our thoughts are with family of Anishalee Cortes in light of this tragedy. Working with our partners at the Newark Police Department, we did everything legally possible to protect Ms. Cortes, including filing for the detention of her abuser, assisting the victim to obtain a restraining order, and preparing her case for a grand jury hearing," said Acting First Assistant Prosecutor Robert Laurino.

A gunman walked up to a man in a crowd outside a Philadelphia restaurant and opened fire overnight leaving the victim shot six times.

The gunman, wearing a hoodie, rubber gloves and a mask took aim at the 22-year-old victim outside Chang Sam on Germantown Avenue in Germantown around 11:15 p.m. Thursday, Philadelphia police said.

The restaurant was open at the time and the victim was surrounded by several other young people when the gunman approached, police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

"The shooter did not even take into consideration the fact that there were so many innocent victims within close proximity to this victim," Small said. "Several of the bystanders were just inches away from the victim while he was being shot."

Officers arrived to find the victim shot six times and rushed him to Einstein Medical Center where he underwent surgery in stable but critical condition.

"Fortunately there were no other victims," Small said.

Surveillance video clearly captured the entire incident, Small said.
