Irwin Medway is a WWII veteran who has received a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, and several other awards for military service. Now, the 93-year-old can add an honorary college degree to that list.

Medway received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Villanova University on Friday, after taking several classes at numerous different universities over the last 24 years.

“I like people so much,” Medway said. “I want to be with the kids.”

And so he stayed with the kids. His educational endeavors started while he was in the army taking college classes. Medway then went on to two other universities, eventually ending up at Villanova in 1993 in a special program for senior citizens. But when that program ended, Medway stayed.

And now, for almost a quarter century, the avid-learner has taken classes every semester.

“I’m a very bold, old person,” Medway said.

The secret to Medway’s boldness in the classroom? He says he always sits up front, and always takes plenty of class notes.

So now what’s next for Medway? He says he wants to keep taking classes.

In the meantime, though, he can be called Doctor Medway.

Teens Attack Couple During Carnival in NE Philly: Police

An investigation is underway after a couple was allegedly attacked by a group of teenagers at a carnival in Northeast Philadelphia.

A woman, who did not want to be identified, told NBC10 she was attending the annual Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church Carnival on the 9000 block of Old Bustleton Avenue Friday night with her two sons, ages 4 and 5. She was waiting for her husband to pick them up when a group of about 20 to 30 teenagers approached her and began attacking her, according to police. The woman said a teen girl punched her and knocked her over and other teens continued to hit her.

“I was kicked and hit by both teenage boys and girls and my phone was stolen all while my kids watched and screamed asking them to stop hurting their mom,” the woman said.

Police say at least one of the teens also hit the woman’s husband in the back of the head when he arrived.

"I was scared," the woman said. "I was looking at my kids crying. I was trying to fight my way out but I couldn't because they were all screaming, 'Kick her in the face.'"

The woman said her husband suffered a gash to his head and other injuries.

"I have two black eyes," her husband said. "A small cut underneath my eye. Numerous lumps and abrasions all over my head."

She told NBC10 she has attended the carnival for years and even went to school at Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She believes the annual carnival needs more security.

No arrests have been made in the attack and police continue to investigate. They have not yet released a description of the suspects.

An organizer for the carnival released a statement saying they were unaware of the incident the woman described.

"In the impromptu gathering of the church committee, police officers and our company, neither the officers hired for the event nor the officers that responded to the incident had mentioned anyone coming to them describing the incident reported," he wrote.

The organizer did confirm however that there was a fight that occurred around 9:20 p.m. Friday involving several girls.

"When the fight was broken up, the girls went in different directions on the church grounds," he said.

The organizer said another incident then occurred a short time later in which a group of four to five children ran through the ride area of the carnival looking to fight with someone.

"Once that group of kids started running, many of the teenagers there, thinking it was a fight, started running as well," the organizer wrote. "The large group went across one side of the midway towards the street, gathered there for about 5 minutes. The same group that started it, ran back through the food area and across the midway to the opposite street. Again, the large group following them followed, increasing in size."

The organizer claims the second incident did not lead to a fight however and he's unaway of any other fights that security guards and police officers had to break up other than the initial fight between the group of girls.

"At the time of the first large movement of people, additional officers were called," he wrote. "When the crowd made the 2nd transition across the midway, the carnival was closed and the police officers very effectively cleared the grounds by 9:50."

The organizer said the number of police officers and security personnel would be increased for Saturday night. They also closed earlier than the scheduled time of 9:30 p.m.

The Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church carnival is a week-long event that takes place every May. The event raises money for the Parish. In 2012 two teens were stabbed during an attempted robbery at the carnival, according to police.

Loved ones are mourning a husband, wife and their grandson who died in a fire at a two-story row home in Philadelphia's Overbrook neighborhood.

The fire started inside a home on the 5400 block of Diamond Street shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday. Cliff Hickman, 84, his wife Annie Hickman, 70, their 30-year-old grandson Tyreke Johnson, and a 19-year-old man were all inside at the time. Neighbors were awoken by the smell of smoke and the sound of screams as the fire spread inside the house.

"Banging on the door and I'm hollering up to the window, telling Miss Anne, 'Come out the window! Your house is on fire,'" Karen Tunstall said.

Firefighters arrived at the home and were able to bring the flames under control. Both Annie Hickman and Johnson were pronounced dead at the scene. Cliff Hickman was taken to Presbyterian Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:37 a.m. The 19-year-old man was also taken to the Lankenau Medical Center where he is in stable condition.

Markesha Wooding, a family member, was in tears as she talked about the victims.

"He was silly, outgoing," Wooding said. "Yeah, my Uncle Cliff was the same way too. Comedian. My Aunt Anne was a God-fearing Christian woman."

Markesha Wooding, a family member, told NBC10 Johnson is from Iowa and was visiting his grandparents at the time of the fire.

"He planned a trip," Wooding said. "He wanted to go fishing with all the guys. That's what they do."

Local residents said the Hickmans were loved by everyone in the community.

"Just a great couple," Marcella Daniels said. "Just really sorry. Just really sorry to see them go."

Police say the fire does not appear to be suspicious but they continue to investigate.
