Four people, including a woman who is 5-months pregnant, are in the hospital and a teen is in custody after a stolen SUV crashed into a deli in Philadelphia Tuesday night, according to investigators.

Police say an 18-year-old suspect was driving a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder Tuesday that had been stolen in Philadelphia Monday. The suspect was driving about 100 miles per hour northbound on Frankford Avenue around 7:45 p.m. when he suddenly lost control of the vehicle, investigators said. He crashed into several other cars before slamming into the Frankford Deli at Frankford Avenue and Tioga Street.

Four people, including a 19-year-old woman who is 5-months pregnant, were inside the deli during the crash. All four were taken to the hospital. Police have not yet revealed their conditions but say their injuries don’t appear to be life-threatening.

Police apprehended the 18-year-old driver of the stolen SUV and took him into custody, investigators said. They are currently searching for the second suspect who was a passenger in the vehicle.

Police are searching for a man accused of exposing himself and masturbating next to a woman on a SEPTA train.

Monae Alvarado told NBC10 the man followed her onto a Market Frankford Line train at the 15th Street Station in Philadelphia around 8 a.m. Friday morning. She says he then sat down next to her, exposed himself and began to masturbate.

“I was surprised, I was shocked,” Alvarado said. “Somebody can have the guts to do that in public.”

Alvarado took out her phone and began to record as the lewd act continued.

“I kept ignoring him but he kept saying stuff to me,” Alvarado said. “Very rude stuff. Making rude comments and stuff about my body. I felt violated. Disrespected.”

Alvarado said the harassment continued until her stop at 69th Street Station in Upper Darby.

Police released photos of a man who they say is a person of interest in the incident. He’s described as a thin, black male with black hair and a beard, approximately 25-years-old and standing 5-foot-9. He was last seen wearing an all-black, USA hoodie. He was also carrying a cellphone with white ear buds.

If you have any information on the incident, please call Philadelphia Police.

The source close to Comey said the memo included a line in which Comey quoted Trump as having said, "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go.” The unclassified memo, which raises questions about obstruction of justice, was first reported by The New York Times.

A man trying to take scenic photos of his SUV by the Jersey Shore ended up trying to dig the vehicle out after it started sinking into the water-logged sand, officials said.

State Park Police responded to a call Tuesday about a vehicle stuck at Island Beach State Park, about 15 miles southeast of Toms River, officials said. A tow company arrived around the same time to find the man at the surf line with his vehicle.

Video posted to Facebook shows the man using what appears to be a shovel as he tries to dig free the white Land Rover from the sand. At one point a wave crashes over the vehicle as he continues to dig.

Officials said it was low tide when help arrived and the tow company was able to easily remove the SUV.

The driver had a Mobile Sportfishing Vehicle permit, which allows him to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle on fishing beaches. He was not issued a summons, officials said.

Witnesses said the man insisted on driving the vehicle away after it was towed, even though its lights were flashing and its engine was making strange sounds.

Man Who Shouldn't Be Behind Wheel Kills Deputy Sheriff: DA

An off-duty Bucks County sheriff's deputy died in a crash when a man who wasn't supposed to be driving allegedly turned into the path of the deputy's motorcycle Tuesday night, authorities said.

The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office announced driving-without-a-license charges Wednesday against Harry Burak, of East Rockhill Township.

Burak turned his 2017 Dodge Ram pickup truck left into his driveway along Route 313 (Dublin Pike) near Sterner Mill Road around 8:30 p.m. and into the path of Deputy Sheriff Keith Clymer, according to a criminal complaint.

Clymer – a member of the domestic relations warrant team and a self-defense instructor – died at the scene. He is survived by his parents and children, the Bucks County Sheriff’s Office said.

“Keith was liked by all who met and worked with him,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post. “He will be sorely missed by all.”

Investigators smelled alcohol on Burak’s breath and discovered his Pennsylvania license was suspended until at least 2023 due to earlier driving-while-intoxicated charges, investigators said. He has four previous violations for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, Pennridge Regional police said.

Burak didn’t cooperate with investigators and it took several officers to subdue him and get him in handcuffs, police said.

A judge arraigned Burak early Wednesday and sent the 27-year-old to county jail after he was unable to post 10 percent of $250,000 bail.

Court records don’t list an attorney for Burak.

Mayor, Council Ousted After Political Brawl Over Police

      $
      0
      0

Mayor Ryan Sloyer's ego got the best of him -- and left his political career in tatters.

That's what some of his longtime neighbors in the tiny borough of East Greenville, Montgomery County, believed led to a landslide loss for the incumbent in the Republican primary Tuesday.

In a place as small as East Greenville, about 50 miles from Philadelphia, a landslide can amount to 100 votes -- 114 to be exact.

Sloyer lost to challenger Keith Gerhart, 188 votes to 74. He wasn't alone. All three incumbents on East Greenville's Council who were up for re-election also suffered defeat by wide margins, including two Republicans who closely aligned themselves with Sloyer.

And the political upheaval in this rural northwest part of the county wasn't limited to the borough boundaries.

All four incumbents on the regional school district's governing body also were ousted by voters. Contentious debate in the Upper Perkiomen School District simmered for months over the school board's approval of a $58 million elementary school.

A revolt, led by the mother-and-son duo of Melanie and Stephen Cunningham, ultimately cost the incumbents on Election Day. The two Cunninghams were in turn the top vote getters among four newcomers elected.

The board shakeup may be too late to stop the momentum of the school. A $10 million bond was recently issued to begin construction of the new school in Upper Hanover Township.

      [[422635044, C]]

In East Greenville, the sweeping change of power in borough government may also be too late to stop what led to the downfall of Sloyer and his Council allies.

The now-lame duck mayor battled a wave of opposition from residents and business owners for more than a year to tear apart the decades-old regional police force that patrols East Greenville and neighboring Pennsburg.

His plan to create a new department serving only East Greenville became so acrimonious in recent months that one opponent told Sloyer "you can't go in the Halloween parade in this borough because you would be stoned."

On June 1, East Greenville is set to pull out of the commission and use state police coverage until Sloyer's plan for a free-standing department rounds into form. Currently, East Greenville has an interim police chief that it pays $45 an hour, Gerhart said. The chief, however, has no office, no holding cells and no vehicle.

The borough did recently purchase a $38,000 sports utility vehicle, Gerhart said.

Gerhart, a former borough councilman who served a partial term as mayor in 1999-2000, ran on a platform that opposes Sloyer's plan to end the Upper Perkiomen Police Commission. He said Sloyer's defense of ending the partnership with Pennsburg was rising costs for the borough. But Gerhart said it was actually Sloyer's inability to work with his Pennsburg neighbors

"They keep saying it’s financial, it’s financial. No, it’s not," Gerhart said of the plan to dissolve the commission. "We went back and found problems between the two boroughs and Sloyer’s name was mentioned each time."

Now, Gerhart said, he would push Sloyer to resign -- a pledge Gerhart said the mayor made late last year if he lost re-election -- and allow incoming elected officials to re-examine the unpopular move for a separate department.

"if I beat him, I’m going to hold his pants to the fire on that one," Gerhart said earlier in the day Tuesday.

All of the fresh faces in East Greenville and on the regional school board don't officially take office until January. (And in the case of the borough council, there also is the matter of the general election in November.)

Sloyer won't be the only lame duck local official who faces a long, hot summer in the Perkiomen Valley.

New Law Protects Bus Drivers From Lawsuits Over EpiPens

      0

School bus drivers and crossing guards will soon be able to administer potentially life-saving medications without fear of being sued.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf signed what is now called Act No. 2 Tuesday.

"The new law amends the Public School Code to provide civil immunity to school bus drivers and crossing guards who administer an epinephrine auto-injector, or EpiPen, to a student who experiences an allergic reaction," House Bill 224 sponsor Rep. Justin Simmons, R-Lehigh/Montgomery/Northampton, said in a news release.

"I would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to finally get this important piece of legislation enacted," Simmons said. "In this case, perseverance paid off, and now bus drivers and crossing guards can administer this medication to a student in medical distress without the fear of any legal consequences, possibly saving a life."

The new act doesn’t mandate that school districts or school bus operators enact an EpiPen policy, but allows for policies to be enacted without the fear of civil litigation, Simmons said. Bus drivers or crossing guards will need to complete a state Department of Health training program and meet school district policies to administer an EpiPen in case of emergency.

Senator Pat Browne, R-Lehigh, sponsored companion legislation in the state Senate.

The new law takes effect in 60 days.
