NJ High School Students Organize Protest Following Layoffs

A group of students have organized a protest and are hoping to have their voices heard after 53 Penns Grove High School employees in New Jersey were laid off at the beginning of May.

Students, teachers, and faculty of all five schools in the Penns Grove-Carneys Point Regional School District will be marching in what they are calling the 'Red Devil March' outside the district's offices Monday at 4:30 p.m.

On May 1, the Board of Education voted to lay off 53 employees, all of whom are teacher aides, which caused a backlash from several students.

The organizers of the march are calling on students, faculty and other members of the community from surrounding districts to join them.

The protest comes on the day that the school board will finalize their budget.

Students had originally planned a walkout during school. However, students say they were told anyone who participated would be suspended, unable to attend prom, and not be allowed on any school trips the remainder of the year.

Did PPA Erase Comp Time Records After Newspaper Inquiry?

0
0

The Philadelphia Parking Authority is coming under fire for allegedly changing their compensation time records after the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News requested to see them.

According to Philly.com, two high level executives asked the agency to erase hours owed to them. Erasing information after receiving a Right-to-Know request is a violation of state law punishable by court fines.

Emails obtained by an unnamed source and provided to the newspapers reportedly showed that Richard Dickson and Dennis Weldon, both deputy executive directors, asked the payroll department to remove their comp time. That request came just four days after the newspaper filed its Right-to-Know request, Philly.com reported.

The debacle started in mid-January when the newspapers requested comp time information from PPA after former executive director Vincent Fenerty collected $227,000 in paid leave, compensation time and 15 years of free health care.

Fenerty was forced out of his job in September following sexual harassment allegations.

PPA initially told journalists they didn’t collect comp time data but then turned over documents showing the opposite. Records obtained allegedly indicated more than one dozen high level PPA employees had accrued large amounts of comp time, which can be cashed out.

PPA said timing of emails were coincidental and not as a response to the newspapers’ inquiry.

“It kind of backfired on us,” Weldon told Philly.com

According to PPA spokesman Marty O’Rourke, Dickson and Weldon “gave back their comp time” in October 2016.

2 Dead After Plane from Philly Crashes in NJ

Two people died after a small plane that departed from Philadelphia International Airport crashed while attempting to land at Teterboro Airport on Monday afternoon, according to the FAA.

The Learjet 35 crashed while approaching Runway 1 at Teterboro Airport at 3:30 p.m. The aircraft went down near Kero Road, about 1/4 mile from the airport in a residential area in Carlstadt, New Jersey.

Officials say two crew members on the plane died from their injuries. There were no passengers on board.

The crash set properties, cars and power lines ablaze, the Carlstadt Police Department said. Thick, black smoke was seen rising high above the crash site, and was visible as far away as New York City. Emergency responders reached the scene a short time later and were working to extinguish the blaze.

The plane crashed near a Department of Public works building, according to Joe Orlando, a spokesman for the town of Carlstadt. He also said no one in that building was harmed inside however.

“Parts of the plane are laying in the garage, I can see the engines, part of the fuselage. There’s just melted cars all over the place in our yard,” he said.

Orlando also said explosions were going off, cars were burning and pieces of the plane were scattered in a township facility.

“Right now they’re trying to put the fires out on the building just next to us... we just keep having little explosions, it’s a crazy situation here,” Orlando said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

The plane's tail number is N452DA. It is registered to A&C Big Sky Aviation in Billings, Montana. It wasn't immediately clear who was operating the plane at the time of the crash.

Steve Case, an entrepreneur and co-founder of AOL, wrote in an Instagram post that the plane appeared to have missed a turn and crashed a few hundred yards from the airport. He was aboard another plane at the airport at the time.

A Carlstadt Police Dept. spokesman said the plane appeared to be listing to its side before the crash.

Meteorologists forecasted strong winds, including gusts up to 45 mph, for northern New Jersey at the time of the crash.

One witness said she was working at United Door when the plane came down right outside her office window.

"We were there working like every day and all of the suddenly we see the airplane coming down," she said. "It landed in the parking lot and then we heard the explosion."

The last crash at or near Teterboro Airport was in 2005, and the last deadly crash was in Nov. 1985, according to the Aviation Safety Network, a well regarded database of international flight incidents. Multiple people died in the 1985 crash.

An armed robber sexually assaulted a 7-Eleven clerk in Delaware and then tried to steal from a woman who was walking inside the store, according to police.

Police say the unidentified man entered the 7-Eleven on the 200 block of Christiana Road in New Castle Monday around 12:30 a.m., approached the sales counter and confronted a female clerk while holding a knife. The suspect then demanded money and cigarettes from the clerk, according to officials. After the clerk gave him money and cigarettes the suspect physically and sexually assaulted her, investigators said.

Police have identified a man who was found dead along the Delaware River after his boat capsized.

Frank Montana IV, 40, of Penns Grove, New Jersey and a passenger were inside a 12-foot flat-bottom boat that capsized Sunday shortly after 2 p.m. about 200 yards out in the river off Penns Grove. The men were setting recreational crab pots at the time, according to the passenger who managed to swim ashore. The passenger was taken to Memorial Hospital and treated for hypothermia and water inhalation.

Witnesses said Montana was swimming about 100 yards from the shore before he went underwater and did not resurface. Emergency responders from Delaware, New Jersey and the U.S. Coast guard conducted search and rescue efforts for several hours until water conditions became unsafe for divers.

Around 9:50 p.m. a Penns Grove homeowner spotted Montana's body along the shore behind his home.

The DNREC Fish & Wildlife Natural Resources Police are investigating the incident.

Video Shows Person of Interest in Point Breeze Arson Fire

Police released surveillance video of a person of interest in an arson fire that destroyed several row homes that were under construction in Philadelphia's Point Breeze section.

On May 1 around 4:15 a.m., police responded to the 1300 block of South 20th Street for a fire. The fire quickly spread through several residential properties owned by developer Ori Feibush's OCF Realty that were in different stages of construction. No injuries were reported.

[[421106013, C]]

Surveillance video recovered from the area shows an unidentified man who police are calling a person of interest in the case. The video shows the man walking at the construction site before the fire occurred. Investigators say he appears to be a young, thin white male wearing a hooded sweatshirt at first. He is later seen again in the video a short time later without the sweatshirt and wearing a t-shirt, distinctive shoes and a reflective backpack.

The ATF, Philadelphia Fire Marshal's Office and Philadelphia Police Department are all investigating the arson. NBC10 also learned police are investigating a possible connection between the fire and vandalism in Kensington in which suspects damaged high-end cars and newly developed properties.

The suspects in the Kensington vandalism left behind a banner with an anti-gentrification message.

[[420877673, C]]

"We are considering all possibilities," Steven Bartholomew of the ATF said. "We have ruled nothing in and nothing out. As of this point the criminal investigation is underway."

Feibush created a Facebook post on the recent vandalism and arson incidents and linked them to anti-semitism. Investigators have not confirmed whether that was a possible motive however.

[[422448074, C]]

Philadelphia Police are offering a $10,000 reward for an arrest and conviction. The Point Breeze homes are in the district of Philadelphia City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson. Johnson is also adding a $2500 reward for anyone with information leading to an arrest bringing the total to $12,500.

If you have any information, please call the ATF 24/7 hotline at 1-888-ATF-FIRE (1-888-283-3473), email: ATFTips@atf.gov or submit a tip anonymously by using the ReportIt App on your mobile phone. You can also call Philadelphia Police or 911.
