Flyers Goalie Michal Neuvirth Suddenly Collapses

Flyers goalie Michal Neuvirth inexplicably collapsed 7 minutes, 37 seconds into Saturday night's 3-0 win over the Devils and had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher.

Neuvirth remained in Pennsylvania Hospital overnight and is being monitored, the club said, adding he was alert.

From what players suggested, Neuvirth may be suffering from the flu, which has been going around the dressing room for weeks now.

"I don't want to speculate -- he's had a little bit of a chest cold, there's been a few things going around, there has been all winter," general manager Ron Hextall said.

"We sent him over to the hospital for precautionary reasons, everything so far has been good, things are positive."

Neuvirth will remain in Philadelphia even if he is released from the hospital. And if Steve Mason, who is also ill, can't make it to New York, then the club will recall Alex Lyon from the Phantoms, Hextall said.

Anthony Stolarz, who played 52:23 but didn't get the win because Neuvirth had a 1-0 lead when he left the game, will go to New York regardless.

"The plan right now is to have him checked out by the doctor on Monday just to make sure," Hextall said of Neuvirth. "He won’t be available tomorrow."

Neuvirth was in a crouch position awaiting a neutral-zone faceoff when he slumped to his left then fell over backward onto the ice, fully outstretched.

Neuvirth did not move at all until medical personnel rushed onto the ice. He eventually began to move his legs and within several minutes was sitting upright before being helped onto the stretcher.

Neuvirth was the scheduled starter in this game, as Mason was 0-9 lifetime against the Devils. Mason was to work Sunday's game in New York against the Rangers.

"As far as Mason, I don't know yet," Hextall said.

Because of Mason's illness, the Flyers had to recall Stolarz from the Phantoms on an emergency basis. Stolarz arrived late at the Wells Fargo Center, missed warmups and was still in the dressing room when the game began.

He got to the bench early in the opening minute of play.

Neuvirth was attended on the ice by the entire Flyers medical team, including trainer Jim McCrossin and team orthopedic surgeon Peter DeLuca, among others.

Hextall and others sitting in the Flyers' executive balcony boxes emptied out and went immediately to the dressing room.

In 2010, Atlanta Thrashers (now Winnipeg Jets) goalie Ondrej Pavelec collapsed in his crease against the Washington Capitals. Neuvirth was the opposing goalie.

Serving as an emergency backup to Stolarz was Eric Semborski. Semborski is a Temple University graduate and Hockey Director at the North East Skate Zone in Philadelphia.

He was an emergency backup in Philadelphia earlier this season when the Chicago Blackhawks lost goalie Corey Crawford to an emergency appendectomy hours before the game.

2nd Derailment at NY's Penn Station in 11 Days Wreaks Havoc

UPDATE: Commuters, Mets Fans Face Travel Nightmare After NJ Transit Derailment Wreaks Havoc at Penn Station

A train derailed at New York's Penn Station Monday for the second time in less than two weeks, crippling the morning commute for tens of thousands of riders but causing no serious injuries, authorities said.

A spokesperson for NJ Transit said there was a "slow-speed derailment" as the train out of Trenton pulled into Track 9 at the height of rush hour, totally shutting down service in and out of the Manhattan hub for more than two hours. Customers in the last four cars had to be escorted off, the spokesperson said. NJ Transit said four of the 1,200 aboard suffered minor injuries; the FDNY said it treated five people. All were expected to be OK.

Limited service was restored by early afternoon, but several lines remained disrupted and Midtown Direct was to be diverted through Hoboken through the day. Amtrak and LIRR service is also affected, and cross-honoring remains in effect system-wide. Get the latest details on commute alternatives here.

As was the case with the March 24 derailment, when an Acela slipped off the tracks and bumped an NJ Transit train heading the opposite way, delays were expected to be significant -- and lasting. The MTA said it planned to cancel up to 30 LIRR trains because NJ Transit would need some of those tracks.

Passengers described feeling a jolt prior to the train reaching the platform, but no crash. At least one Twitter user described "total panic" erupting, and one person was seen being loaded onto an orange stretcher.

Another Twitter user said her husband, who was in one of the derailed cars, reported both exit vestibules were crushed. Others described confusion and chaos.

"We were just pulling into Penn Station and all of a sudden we felt this kind of ... shake which I've definitely felt before but this was just out of normal," said rider Caroline Grenis. "It was like the biggest rock I've ever felt."

Grenis said she grabbed her friend Carly Susman and the two clutched each other.

"We didn't know honestly if it was just going to keep going and get worse," Susman said.

The accident is under investigation; Amtrak, which owns the tracks, is also assessing the situation. Meanwhile, riders described a frenzied aftermath. Passengers on city-bound NJT trains said their trains were being backtracked to Secaucus, where video showed people standing shoulder-to-shoulder about six deep on the platform. Chopper over the Secaucus scene showed throngs of stranded passengers also standing outside. Other riders said their trains were being held in various stations along the Northeast Corridor line.

No one was hurt in last month's derailment, but the accident wrought havoc on the morning and evening commutes, bringing all of Penn Station to a standstill for most of the day.

Weather Blog: Week Ahead Has April Showers

$

0

Springtime is a season of transitional weather for our area and we'll certainly see a variety of conditions this week.

Monday, for example, is warmer but not as sunny as what we enjoyed Sunday. Winds shifted and it's those southerly winds that will warm us into the middle 60s while skies see a combination of sun and clouds.

The brief warming trend continues Tuesday, however, it doesn't last through the end of the week. High temperatures will be below normal Friday and Saturday.

Changes in the temperatures will be accompanied by at least a couple of rounds of spring showers and possibly thunderstorms.

The first storm to impact the tristate region already spread clouds into the northeast Monday. Rain, though, will hold off until later this evening and thunderstorms are possible overnight into early Tuesday morning.

The same large storm system will boost temps into the 70s and give us a chance of more showers and thunderstorms Tuesday.

After a nice and sunny day Wednesday, another storm system starts moving into the area Thursday morning. This second storm won't be as quick to move out -- clouds and the chance of showers are likely to linger into Friday. This will make for a chilly and breezy afternoon at the ballpark with a chance of scattered showers.

Finally, the week ends on a cool, but dry, note Saturday. And, Sunday is looking good with sunny skies and the beginning of a warming trend.

Two Philadelphia first responders made history Monday afternoon. A promotional swearing-in was held for Captain Linda Long who will become the city’s first female Fire Battalion Chief and Paramedic Captain Crystal Yates who will become the city’s first African-American female Paramedic Services Chief.

The promotional swearing-in ceremony took place from noon to 12:30 p.m. at the Philadelphia Fire Academy on 5200 Pennypack Street.

Long joined the Philadelphia Fire Department as a paramedic in 1990. She was the first person --male or female – to rise through the ranks as both a paramedic and a firefighter. In 2003, when she was a 39-year-old Paramedic Captain, Long decided to become a firefighter cadet. She is now being promoted to Fire Battalion Chief 14 years later.

Yates joined the Philadelphia Fire Department in 1998 and worked as a paramedic in North Philadelphia, Logan and Mantua. In 2004 she was promoted to Paramedic Lieutenant and in 2013 she and Fire Lieutenant Lisa Forrest became the first African-American women to be promoted to captain. Yates will now become the first African-American female Paramedic Services Chief.

“Long and Yates are building on the legacy of other women in the Fire Department,” a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Fire Department wrote. “Deputy Chief for EMS Diane Schweizer is currently the highest-ranking woman in the Department. Lt. Diane Mercer, the longest-serving woman in the Department, was one of the first three women to join in 1985.”

Long, Yates and 22 other candidates were sworn in Monday. A formal promotional ceremony will take place for them in June.
