Power Outages Planned for 8K to 10K PECO Customers

Power outages are being planned for 8,000 to 10,000 customers in North Philadelphia as workers continue to make repairs at a PECO substation following a fire last week.

PECO officials initially said the planned outages would take place between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Sunday in homes surrounding the Westmoreland substation on 2634 W. Westmoreland Street. They later told NBC10 however the outages were delayed and they have not yet given a specfic time for when they will begin.

Saturday's bitter cold temperatures caused generators to malfunction for more than 11,500 residents in the Hunting Park section of the city and other North Philadelphia neighborhoods.

The generators were being used by residents who lost power Tuesday when an electrical fire spread through the Westmoreland Station. Around 36,000 customers were without power at the peak of the blaze.

Traffic lights at surrounding intersections throughout North Philadelphia were out due to the fire. Generators and stop signs were placed in impacted intersections from Broad to 33rd streets and in the Hunting Park section of the city. Police also assisted at the busier intersections.

PECO crews continue to work to restore power for those impacted by the outages Tuesday and Saturday.

After winning the national championship in 2016, Villanova will have the easiest path to defending its title in the NCAA Tournament this season.

The Wildcats (31-3, 15-3 Big East) have been awarded the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, playing in the East Region. 'Nova will face the winner of the play-in game between the Mt. Saint Mary's Mountaineers from the Northeast Conference (19-15) and the New Orleans Privateers (20-11) from the Southland Conference Thursday in Buffalo.

Behind Josh Hart’s 29 points, 'Nova blasted Creighton, 74-60, on Saturday to capture the Big East Tournament title (see story).

Duke was named the No. 2 seed in the East Region.

Heading into conference tournament play, Kansas held the No. 1 ranking, but was shocked by TCU, 62-63, in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals.
