Tracking Afternoon Snow Showers

0
0

Some quick-moving snow showers could impact your Friday afternoon.

With temps in the upper 30s, the scattered snow isn’t expected to stick much in Philadelphia and the immediate suburbs.

No more than a dusting to an inch of snow is expected in Berks County, the Lehigh Valley and Poconos, the National Weather Service said.

Once the system moves through – it’s began falling in parts of the region around 1 p.m. – expect cold weather to stick around this weekend with highs likely not getting out of the 30s under mostly sunny skies Saturday and Sunday.

Forget the Coin: Pa. Lottery Releases Lazier Lottery Ticket

Playing the lottery will take less effort -- and no coin -- now in the Keystone State.

The Pennsylvania Lottery launched Tuesday its new "Fast Play" game that doesn’t require players to scratch-off the tickets or wait for a drawing. Instead, the ticket is generated and printed on-demand from sales terminals and kiosks. The player can then immediately scan the ticket or examine it to see if it’s a winner.

"Fast Play launch is a milestone in the evolution of the Pennsylvania Lottery," lottery executive director Drew Svitko said.

The game is the first entirely new type of game for the Pa. Lottery since they introduced scratch-offs in the mid1970s, the lottery said.

"This new type of game has been popular in other states and we expect Pennsylvania Lottery players will enjoy it, as well," Svitko said.

Fast Play tickets come in 41, $2 and $5 tickets and prizes can vary.

Hero Guest Who Can't Swim Saves Drowning Boy From Hotel Pool

A 37-year-old Pennsylvania man is being hailed a hero for rescuing a drowning 9-year-old boy from a New Jersey hotel pool.

Authorities say Randolph Tajada-Perez was checking into the LaQuinta hotel in Fairfield around 6:30 p.m. Thursday when a man ran to the front desk, saying the little boy was under water in the deep end.

Tajada-Perez ran to the pool area and, despite not knowing how to swim, jumped into the water and was able to get the boy out. By the time police arrived, the boy had already been administered CPR and was breathing on his own. Cops gave him oxygen until he was taken to a hospital.

The boy was listed in stable condition Friday morning.

According to police, the boy was at the pool with his mother, four young siblings and the mother's companion. It wasn't clear if all of them were in the pool, but police say the adults were attending to the boy's younger siblings when he started to struggle and ended up going under in the deep end.

The family is from Paterson. None of the members knew how to swim, authorities said.

Broadway Star Talks Use of N-Word in NJ High School Musical

A South Jersey high school used the use of a racial slur in its upcoming musical as an opportunity for the school to educate students.

Cherry Hill East welcomed Brian Stokes Mitchell, an original Ragtime cast member, to the school Friday afternoon to discuss the controversial musical about race relations set at the turn of the 20th Century.

The N-word is used numerous times during the musical and in some cases isn’t used in productions. Cherry Hill East, however, decided to keep the word in with hopes of creating a conversation about race.

In January, Cherry Hill Superintendent Joseph Meloche wrote a letter explaining the school's decision to perform Ragtime as written.

"These are tumultuous, difficult times. We believe that while these difficult times provide challenges in our educational community, they also provide an opportunity and an obligation to educate," Meloche wrote. "We believe we can educate using difficult subject matter presented in a safe, sensitive way."

The school put together curriculum dealing with racial issues and the use of the N-word.

"We will make it abundantly clear that we loathe the N-word, that we despise this most vile of words in our language," Meloche wrote. "Loathing of the N-word was a theme reiterated by Mitchell during his visit to Cherry Hill East Friday – one week before Ragtime debuts.

"It should be an ugly word, it is an ugly word, it's not a word to use, it's not appropriate to use the word and that's again the point of Ragtime... it's meant to have that effect," Mitchell said.

"If people are not thinking it's an ugly word, those are the people I'm concerned with," Mitchell told students.

Ragtime runs from March 10 to March 19 at Cherry Hill East.

Franklin Inst. Astronomer Pitts Named 'Philadelphia Hero'

Mayor Jim Kenney is honoring a Philadelphia astronomer with an out-of-this-world recognition Friday evening.

Franklin Institute chief astronomer Derrick Pitts has been declared as a "Philadelphia Hero" at the Franklin Institute for his contribution to educating and exposing children to the sciences.

Twelve students of the Boys & Girls Club's 2016 Young Writers Workshop also presented their newly published biography called "Derrick Pitts Astronomy Superstar."

"It's common for children to shy away from the sciences because they think [success] is unreachable," Pitts said. "The recognition is humbling, but I'm just a regular man who helps kids appreciate science and show them what their work and efforts can do -- in anything they do. This ceremony is about them."

Pitt has also devoted his time over the years demonstrating how science is a abstract and universal concept.

"Science is for everyone and everything," he said. "Most issues in today's age requires science: nutrition, space exploration, medicine, manufacturing. And you can't pick and choose who's going to be a great scientist because everyone has the potential."

Pitts said he was excited to receive his own biography written by the students.

"Tonight is about them. I'll just be hanging around picking something up from the mayor -- a cookie, perhaps," he joked.

Pitts, a member of the Franklin Institute since 1978, said he'd give the student writers a tour through the "Jurassic World" exhibit following the ceremony.
