The suspect in the stabbing of an 8-year-old in the head Friday has been arraigned on $250,000 and was sent to county jail after not initially posting bail.

Majeah Bashir, 32, allegedly stabbed the little girl, causing a large gash along her hairline, during an argument about babysitting, police said. She is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.

She allegedly attacked the second-grader in an apartment building hallway in Collingdale, Delaware County, in front of several other children.

Officer arrived Friday afternoon at an apartment along the 500 block of MacDade Boulevard and found a man carrying a young girl who was bleeding from the head.

The man, who was working nearby, heard screams coming from the apartment.

Investigators said that during an argument, Bashir allegedly stabbed the girl in the head with a butcher knife.

Collingdale Police Chief Robert Adams said there was blood all over her hands and arms. The whole thing played out in front of the girl's siblings and other children, "They were right in the mix of all this," he said.

The second-grader was taken to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital then transferred to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for further treatment.

Adams said the gash on her head was about 4 inches, but the girl was alert, talking, and expected to be fine. He credited the quick reaction of the man who carried the girl out, as well as the quick reaction of his officers in getting the girl to the hospital.

Adams said there has recently been some "bad blood" between the Bashir family and the girl's family, who lives on the first floor.

Bashir faces attempted homicide, aggravated assault and other charges, according to the Chief.

Her arraignment is expected to be some time next week.

NJ High School Officials Suspended Amid Probe of Grade Irregularities

The Principal at a North Jersey high school was among 10 staff members suspended Thursday after an audit revealed a reported 3,000 changes or discrepancies with grades and graduation credits.

As many as 300 students at Engelwood's Dwight Morrow High School, worried about how the issue will affect college applications and transcripts, walked out of class Friday in protest, with some demanding the superintendent's firing.

"I have worked my butt off at the school for four years," said senior Ruby Maury-Jyun. "I've been working nonstop and trying to balance everything."

Superintendent Robert Kravitz said he became aware of transcript irregularities when some students and parents complained their grades were different than expected after records were moved from one report card system to a newer one.

The administrator explained that it could have been innocent entry mistakes or just plain incompetence, something that an audit, just now getting underway, should explain.

Dwight Morrow Principal Peter Elbert, vice principal Joe Armental, director of school guidance Dr. Noel Gordon and a number of guidance counselors were among those suspended – another point of protest for students who need those counselors during this crucial college application time.

Senior Gamma Hammond says she missed the early admission deadline at Rutgers.

"I didn't want them to think that my grades were lower than they really are, because it's not my fault that they put in a weighing system that weighs my grades lower than they should be," she said.

Students unanimously agreed the counselors were not at fault. However, the superintendent defended the suspensions, saying he needs fresh eyes, including state specialists, to figure what went wrong going back several years.

Education officials say those suspended failed to make sure the grades were accurate after the district began using a new software.

2 Officers Sprayed With Mace, Four Arrested at City Protest

Two police officers were taken to the hospital after they were sprayed with mace at a large protest on Broad Street that turned violent for a time Friday evening. Four men were taken into custody following the incident.

Officials say it happened when police worked to keep demonstrators from entering private buildings near Temple University. Officers say they created a barrier by lining up in front of a bank. That’s when two of them were sprayed with mace.

One organizer denied that protesters lashed out first. She told NBC10 that police were the aggressors.

“We were attempting to continue our protest, continuing to assert our rights to protest and police did not want us to go certain places and they decided they were going to stop us by being violent,” Megan Malachi of the Black Resistance March said.

"Once you elect to spray police officers with a caustic substance, you are no longer involved in protest activity, you are involved in criminal activity,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan said.

The mace incident wasn’t the only conflict. SkyForce10 caught police and protesters scuffling as officers tried to get around demonstrators on bicycles at Broad and Cecil B Moore Avenue.

Witness video also showed police and protesters clashing. The reason for that fight wasn’t clear.

Malachi said, “there is no such thing as a peaceful protest when police are present."

Demonstrators started the march from City Hall walking north on Broad Street. A group in the front held letters that spelled out “Ungovernable.”

The crowd of about 100 stopped periodically along Broad Street for leaders to make speeches. One such stop happened at Broad and Girard Avenue. SkyForce10 hovered overhead as participants started a fire at the intersection. The group later threw an American flag onto the blaze.

Police were still looking at evidence to decide what, if any, charges would be filed against those taken into custody.

Protests wrapped up near Temple University on Broad Street by 9 p.m.
