Police are searching for a man accused of kidnapping and assaulting a woman in Wilmington, Delaware Monday night.

The woman told police she got out of her car around 8:45 p.m. at the Top of the Hill Apartments community on Prior Road when she was approached by a man armed with a gun. The gunman forced the woman into a vehicle and drove her to an ATM on Marsh Road, police said. He then demanded that she withdraw money, according to investigators.

The woman told police the man was talking to himself and he also punched her. He then took her back to the apartment complex, released her and fled the area, police said.

The woman was treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and later released.

Another woman who lives in the community told NBC10 it's normally safe and quiet.

"Beautiful, quiet, friendly," said Cassanda Bradley. "I have my son running around here. He's 12. He's always running around. I never worry about him but now I guess I have to rethink things a little bit."

The only other recent reported violent crime in the area was an armed robbery about a mile away from the complex last January, according to the New Castle County Police crime map.

The suspect is described as a thin, middle-aged white man standing 5-foot-8 and wearing a ski mask. Police also say he may be driving a dark-colored SUV.

Police are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. If you have any information, please call New Castle County Police at 302-573-2800. You can also submit a tip on the New Castle County police website or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.

Police arrested a woman accused of crashing into two vehicles as well as a pedestrian and then fleeing the scene in the Germantown section of Philadelphia Tuesday morning.

The unidentified woman was driving a rental car near Germantown and Armat streets around 9:30 a.m. when she struck a Chevrolet Impala, police said.

The woman allegedly continued driving and then struck a pedestrian as well as another vehicle. The woman fled the scene and drove back to the rental car building, according to investigators. When she arrived she was arrested by responding officers, police said.

The pedestrian who was struck was taken to the hospital and is currently in stable condition. Officials say Shelly Yanoff, a longtime Philadelphia activist, and her husband were also inside one of the vehicles struck by the hit-and-run driver. Yanoff was not seriously injured however.

Police have not yet released the suspect's identity.

NJ Girl Donates 1300 Books to Local Reading Program

While most people were busy thinking about what gifts they were going to receive this holiday season, 12-year-old Charlotte Olson had another idea. She set the goal of collecting 1,000 books for the Read and Reach Out program in her local town of Vorhees, New Jersey.

This week, after sorting through the boxes and boxes of donations, she fulfilled the goal and proudly delivered 1,303 books to Cooper University Health System.

“I've always wanted to do something like this and help others," she said. “When I was little I dreamt of being on the news and collecting for people.”

Charlotte began her project through word of mouth. She started by telling family, friends, and neighbors about her goal and placed a large box for donations on her family’s front porch.

She then moved on to local businesses, like Cutting Times Salon in Berlin, New Jersey, Moozies Play Café in Turnersville, and Angels of God clothing closet in Pitman. Charlotte asked the business to place a donation box in their store.

Through more efforts on social media, the word got out about Charlotte’s book drive, and even she didn’t expect the outcome.

“My goal was 1000 but I didn't expect to get over that,” Charlotte admitted.

Luckily, she was proven wrong. Charlotte ended up taking in over 2,000 books between all her donation centers. She also raised $250 to purchase new books for the Read and Reach Out program.

Pediatricians at the Children’s Regional Hospital said the donations are greatly appreciated.

“The more words kids hear before the age of three, the better their language is, better life course,” said Dr. Mohammed Jawaad Hussain. “I tell my patients it's a better chance for getting a college scholarship.”

The Read and Reach Out program was established at the hospital in 1998 and allows doctors to gift books to their patients to get them reading, both on their own and with parents. With 92 programs across the state, Read and Reach Out serves over 75,000 children annually.

Charlotte is currently working towards her community service award for National American Miss Pre-teen New Jersey 2017, a pageant she has participated in for the past two years. Coincidence or not, Charlotte’s aspirations happen to lie right where her books have gone.

“I kind of want to be a doctor, an emergency room doctor."

Dozens of immigration activists converged on ICE headquarters in Philadelphia after two people were taken into custody.

The unidentified man and woman were taken by officials to Philadelphia’s ICE headquarters at 16th and Callowhill streets Tuesday. Members of the New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia, an interfaith immigrant justice organization, alerted local activists who gathered outside the building for a demonstration.

NBC10 reached out to ICE officials for a statement on the detainment. A spokesperson for ICE said the incident was “business as usual” and there wasn't an uptick in local detainments. The spokesperson did not reveal the identities of the two people nor why they were taken into custody.

Mayor Jim Kenney retweeted a message from the city stating they were working to find out how many people were impacted by increased ICE enforcements.

Police have identified a man accused of grabbing and forcibly kissing a SEPTA officer.

The officer was on regular patrol at the 69th Street Transportation Center in Upper Darby around 3:30 p.m. Monday when she was approached by a man later identified by police as Yesufu Ganiyu, 53.

Ganiyu repeatedly told the officer, "let me kiss you," according to police. Investigators say he then grabbed the officer and kissed her against her will. SEPTA released video showing the suspect speaking to the officer immediately after the alleged incident.

"Let me give you one kiss, just one kiss," Ganiyu says in the video.

Investigators say the officer pushed Ganiyu away as he continued to approach her, called for backup and then used her arms to spin him and place him under control. Ganiyu was arrested and charged with assault, harassment, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

The officer was shaken up but not physically injured.

Montco Production Team Creates Props for SNL's Spicer Sketch

Saturday Night Live's latest run of political satire is being fueled by a Montgomery County company.

When actress Melissa McCarthy returned to SNL to play White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer last weekend, she pummeled through the press corps behind a podium made by Monkey Boy Productions, a prop, puppet and costume shop based in Wyncote, Pennsylvania.

Michael Latini, a graduate of Archbishop Wood High School and co-founder of Monkey Boy Productions, and fellow co-founder Marc Petrosino, were the brains behind the stage McCarthy first appeared on as Spicer.

On February 1 they got a call from SNL asking them to create McCarthy’s podium by February 3. After the success of the first sketch, which tallied over 23 million views on YouTube, they got the call to up the ante. This time, the show needed a mobile unit that would allow McCarthy to barrel into the crowd. They had 36 hours to make it.

“We're running around in the snow trying to find an electric wheelchair. We get back here, we're pulling it apart, pulling the seat off, trying to make an extra platform,” said Petrosino.

They built the new rig out of isolation foam which is sturdy but also light.

While McCarthy had a blast during the sketch, Petrosino says it took her a little while to get used to the mobile podium.

“In the first rehearsal, she got on it and was initially a little tentative and then she realized how fast it could go and was whipping around the rehearsal space, running people over for like 15, 20 minutes, just having a blast," he said.

Petrosino and Latini started the production company with Scott Hitz and Russell Tucker in 2006 after meeting at the Eugene O'Neill National Puppetry Conference in Waterford, Connecticut. The company has made props for smaller scale productions, and even Broadway shows.

While this is the first time one of their props has helped make a sketch go viral, this isn’t their first time working for SNL. Two years ago, they crafted “Little Shop of Horrors” puppets for a sketch featuring Bobby Moynihan and host Scarlett Johansson. While the sketch didn’t make it to air, their work caught the attention of the producers.

Fast forward to Season 42, and they’re getting called in for almost every episode. Seeing their work used in front of millions of people has them in awe.

“It’s amazing production," Petrosino said. "To hear the audience live in studio 8H is overpowering. They're so loud.”

AROUND THE WORLD

Trump Knew Flynn Misled White House Weeks Before Ouster: Just six days into his presidency, Donald Trump was informed his national security adviser had misled his vice president about contacts with Russia. Trump kept his No. 2 in the dark and waited nearly three weeks before ousting the aide, Michael Flynn, citing a slow but steady erosion of trust, White House officials said Tuesday. Flynn was interviewed by the FBI about his telephone conversations with Russia's ambassador to the U.S., a sign his ties to Russia had caught the attention of law enforcement officials. But in the White House's retelling of Flynn's stunning downfall, his error was not that he discussed U.S. sanctions with the Russian before the inauguration — a potential violation of a rarely enforced law — but the fact that he denied it for weeks, apparently misleading Vice President Mike Pence and other senior Trump aides about the nature of the conversations. White House officials said they conducted a thorough review of Flynn's interactions, including transcripts of calls secretly recorded by U.S. intelligence officials, but found nothing illegal. Pence, who had vouched for Flynn in a televised interview, is said to have been angry and deeply frustrated.

Police were investigating reports of a gas station robbery and shooting in Essex County Wednesday morning, less than a week after armed thieves targeted five gas stations in the county in one day.

There were reports of a robbery at a gas station in Irvington on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, but details about the possible robbery were still unclear.

On Monday, four masked men robbed five gas stations in the county — three in Newark and one in Belleville and Orange, respectively, according to authorities.

Gas attendant Parmjit Singh was one of the victims. He said two of the men cornered him, guns in their hands, and stole more than $200.

“I — hands up,” Singh said. “Everybody is scared of gun.”

Police were searching for a gray Lexus with damage to the rear bumper and a Florida license plate.

Young Adults More Likely Than Teens to Text and Drive: Study

$

0

A new study by AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety confirmed that millennials can’t seem to put down their cellphones, even when they’re behind the wheel.

After surveying over 2,500 Americans, AAA concluded that 19- to 24-year-olds are more inclined than any other age group, including teens, to check their phones for texts while in the driver’s seat. Millennial drivers also aren’t as supportive of legislation aimed at stemming distractions while on the road, and they’re more likely to normalize texting and driving than other groups.

In all, 88.4 percent of respondents from ages 19-24 reported engaging in dangerous behaviors like texting, speeding and red-light running. That compared to 79.2 percent for people 25-39 and 69.3 percent for 16- to 18-year-olds.

Phone use is one of many dangers that contribute to almost 100 American deaths every day, on average, because of car wrecks. Another is driving while intoxicated, which almost everyone agreed was a serious threat to their personal safety.

But as the study notes, most American drivers seem to abide by the mantra, “Do as I say, not as I do.” More than one in eight respondents said they had driven after drinking within the past year.

[[413815743, C, 620, 436]]

Aggressive driving can also cause wrecks. Though over three-fourths of those polled said they disapproved of speeding on the freeway, nearly half admitted to driving at least 15 miles over the speed limit in the past month.

Because of irresponsible driving, 982,307 Americans have died since 1991. One in five survey respondents had been in a serious accident, and one in three was close with someone who had been injured or killed on the road.

In 2015, there were 35,092 people who lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes, a 7.2 percent increase from the year before.

"People in the United Sates do value safe travel and desire a greater level of safety than they now experience," the authors of the survey wrote.

[[413815813, C, 620, 436]]

Because of dangers associated with driving, many of those questioned said that it’s unacceptable to not wear a seat belt. Still, one in six admitted they hadn't buckled up in the last month.
