Albert Boscov, an American retail tycoon who spent the last half century as Reading, Pennsylvania's civic patron, died Friday, his son, Jim, said. He was 87.

Boscov took over the family retail business decades ago from his father, who founded the company in 1914, and proceeded to grow it into a giant in the eastern United States.

It now has 50 stores, with more than $1 billion in sales, and employs more than 7,500.

"Albert Boscov was truly one of the giants in the retail industry," company CEO Jim Boscov said in a statement. "He was a man of vision and passion and he had a profound influence on the retail business community and the community at large."

The Boscovs have been part of the civic landscape in Berks and Lancaster counties for more than a century when Solomon Boscov, Albert's father, first started his own business. He peddled goods to farmers in the region, the Reading Eagle reported.

His nonprofit was responsible for building Reading's arts center, and the Berks County Convention Center Authority installed a statue of him in the heart of the small city, at Second and Washington streets. The area is now known as the Albert Boscov Plaza.

Shelter Kitten Beats the Odds, Ready to Find Forever Home

When Lil Bitz was found in Germantown along with his mother and four siblings in December, he weighed only five ounces -- compared to his brothers’ weights of 12 to 15 ounces.

By three weeks old, Bitz was about the size of an average new born kitten.

But now, after three months in the care of Philadelphia's Animal Care and Control Team, the runt beat the odds and has grown into a healthy kitten looking for a fur-ever home.

“Runts like Lil Bitz have a hard time surviving for many reasons, sometimes because of underlying medical conditions, or simply not being able to eat due to the stronger litter mates pushing them away,” said Dr. Hillary Herendeen, V.M.D., Medical Director of ACCT Philly. “But with supplemental feeding and careful monitoring, runts can make it.”

With the help of a foster home, bottle feeding three to four times a day in addition to nursing from mom, and a calorie-dense supplement called Nutrical, Bitz began to grow. He was soon back to playing with his siblings, however he wasn’t on the road to full recovery just yet.

Bitz developed a digestive problem that caused him a lot of discomfort. Doctors were not able to determine if the problem was congenital, a birth defect, or a condition called 'Megacolon'. His foster mom decided to treat his condition in hopes for a resolution and with the help of daily enemas, medication and lots of love and care from his mom and veterinary students from the University of Pennsylvania, Bitz was able to outgrow his digestive problems.

Bitz eventually became healthy enough to be neutered and will soon be heading to ACCT Philly’s Everyday Adoption Center at PetSmart in Plymouth Meeting to find a new home.

“It is tempting to keep him,” said Darcy Oordt, Bitz’ foster mom and Data Coordinator for ACCT Philly. “But I want him to have an extra special home. I know he will make someone very, very happy.”

To adopt Lil Bitz, visit him at the Everyday Adoption Center inside PetSmart Plymouth Meeting at 2100 Chemical Road, Plymouth Meeting, PA. For more information, please call ACCT Philly at 267-385-3800 or email adopt@acctphilly.com

While it isn’t Mallrats 2, director Kevin Smith appears to be getting his work back on the big screen.

The New Jersey native announced a reboot for his popular movie 'Jay and Silent Bob’ in a nearly 400-word Instagram post Thursday afternoon.

In the post, Smith describes the hoops he had to jump through to get the film off the ground, but says he is excited to put his own stamp on the new chapter:

“Back in the day, all I ever wanted to do was sell my stuff so I could be in the movie biz in the first place,” Smith said.

Smith, who plays Silent Bob alongside the always outspoken Jason Mewes, says he started writing the script in January and hopes to be rolling this summer. The duo made their debut in Smith’s 1994 film 'Clerks' and have made multiple appearances since then, including the 2001 comedy 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.'

This past summer, he planned to film the Mallrats sequel at the Exton Square Mall in Chester County, but the project fell through. Now Smith seems to have his shot for a redo.

Police in Florida pulled a New Jersey man to safety moments before his burning SUV exploded.

The dramatic rescue was captured on dashcam video. Police say Phillip Thistle, 44, of New Jersey was driving northbound on Washington Avenue in Titusville, Florida and veered onto Riveredge Drive when he lost control of his Toyota RAV 4. The vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier, rolled over several times and then caught fire.

Thistle, who was the only person inside, pulled himself out of the wreck and collapsed only a few feet from the burning vehicle. Responding officers managed to pull Thistle to safety just before the vehicle exploded.

Thistle was taken to a nearby hospital and then airlifted to another hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.

Police continue to investigate the accident.

Friends and family gathered Saturday to celebrate the life of a community organizer who was found shot to death inside her West Philadelphia home.

A candlelight vigil was held around 5 p.m. for Winifred "Winnie" Harris outside her home on the 300 block of N. Holley Street.

Harris, 65, was found unresponsive in her second floor bedroom back on February 3 shortly after 8:20 p.m. Police say Harris was suffering from several gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

No arrests have been made. Police continue to investigate.

"It really disturbs me that she lost her life this way," said Elizabeth Waring, Harris' longtime friend.

Harris was the acting executive director and volunteer coordinator for UC Green, a program that provides maintenance to around 500 trees and public spaces throughout Philadelphia.

"There was nothing that she didn't think she could do," said Harris' nephew Emmanuel Harris. "And everything she thought she could do she did, and she accomplished it. She did it amazingly."

A funeral for Harris is scheduled for Monday.

Harris is survived by a daughter and grandchild. A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in her murder.

If you have any information on Harris' death, please call Philadelphia police.

A New Hope, Pennsylvania man received an unexpected visitor outside his home Saturday afternoon. Craig Forchetti recorded as a hot air balloon landed in front of his house on Ridge Road around 4:30 p.m.

Forchetti says he lives near farmland and hot air balloons often fly over his home.

The incident was not an emergency landing, according to the hot air balloon pilot. He told NBC10 he chose to land in the area in order to avoid more muddy spots. The pilot also shared with NBC10 photos he took while in the air.

Cancer Survivors Have Dream Wedding in NJ

It was a moment that Ashley Wood and Kevin Sochanchak were not sure they would ever see. After cancer diagnoses put their wedding plans on hold, the South Jersey couple finally got married Saturday in Deptford.

“Very unreal,” Wood said. “I can’t believe this is happening.”

Wood was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2011 while Sochanchak was diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach and esophageal cancer in 2014. Yet through their love and support for one another, the couple managed to defy the odds.

Wood was declared cancer-free in 2016 while Sochanchak continues to fight despite only being given six months to live after his initial diagnosis. While the couple had to cancel many of their plans due to their cancer battle, they were able to fulfill their dream wedding thanks to a South Jersey restaurant.

They were one of four couples nominated by Adelphia Restaurant in Deptford, New Jersey in a wedding giveaway contest which they won last December. Vendors donated photos, flowers and Wood’s wedding dress.

“I’m just really grateful for everything they have been doing to get me through this moment,” Wood said.

The newlyweds know their struggle is far from over as Sochanchak continues to battle. Yet for one night, they were able to put that struggle on hold and celebrate their enduring love.

KKK Fliers Found Outside Maple Shade Homes

An investigation is underway after Ku Klux Klan fliers were found outside homes in Maple Shade, New Jersey.

On Sunday around 11:45 a.m. police were called to a home on South Boulevard Avenue after a resident found a KKK recruitment flier outside the house. Responding officers searched the neighborhood and found three more KKK fliers outside of two additional homes and a closed business.

The fliers include the messages “love your own race,” “stop homosexuality and race mixing,” and “join the Klan today.” The fliers also include a phone number with a North Carolina area code.

“There’s no room for that kind of hate here in Maple Shade,” said Lou Manchello, a Maple Shade council member.

Investigators believe whoever delivered the fliers doesn’t know the area well since one of the locations where one was found is a closed business storefront.

“I am surprised,” said Sandy Sauselein, a Maple Shade resident. “I don’t know. It was a shock to me.”

Maple Shade Police are asking anyone who finds more fliers in the area to call them at 856-779-7111.

A college basketball player is recovering after he was struck during a double shooting in the Bella Vista section of Philadelphia.

John Davis as well as a 16-year-old boy were on the 900 block of S. 4th Street at 12:30 a.m. Sunday when an unidentified gunman opened fire. The teen boy was struck once in the left thigh while Davis was grazed in the right knee.

Both Davis and the teen were taken to the hospital and placed in stable condition.

Davis is a senior forward for the Towson University men’s basketball team. He grew up in Philadelphia where he played for Saints John Neumann and Maria Goretti Catholic High School. During his career at Neumann and Goretti he helped lead the team to three consecutive PIAA Class AAA state tournament championships.

Davis was back in his hometown Saturday night after Towson University played against the Drexel Dragons. He remained in Philly that night to attend the dedication for the birth of his son, according to Towson’s head coach Pat Skerry.

“He was outside of his family home when a car drove by and opened fire,” Kerry said in a released statement. “We are extremely thankful that John, and everybody else involved was not seriously harmed. Our main focus right now is on the health of John Davis.”

Davis was released from the hospital, according to Towson University. They have not yet revealed what his status will be for the remainder of the season. He is currently averaging 11.8 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game in 32 games for Towson University this year.

A firefighter suffered minor injuries while battling a fire at an abandoned home full of drugs and needles in Atlantic City overnight.

The fire started at a rowhome on the 1000 block of Belfield Avenue around 1 a.m. Firefighters were able to bring the flames under control. One firefighter suffered minor burns. He was treated at the hospital and later released.

Officials say the home was abandoned and was being used as a drug house. They also say they found drug paraphernalia in every room as well as needles on the floor. Officials say there were so many needles inside that it was difficult for firefighters to move through the home and fight the flames.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
