Del. Nurse Saves Man's Life, Finds Him Through Facebook

Amy Smythe was running a half marathon in Key West earlier this month when, right after she crossed the finish line, she saw a man in front of her collapse.

Smythe, a cardiovascular nurse at Christiana Hospital in Delaware, knew the man needed help and immediately rushed to his assistance. She administered CPR, saving the man's life, but never knew what happened to him after that.

“I was just saying that morning that I think I’m better off not knowing what happened to him because it kept eating at me,” Smythe said. “Did we do enough for him?” She wasn't sure he had lived.

But Smythe did do enough, because the man, Bill Amirault of Colorado, recovered and was searching for her through social media from his hospital bed in Florida. It wasn’t until Smythe’s friends showed her a video of Amirault that she was able to get in contact with him.

Amirault initially posted the video of himself asking to find the people who saved him and asked his friends and family to share the post, wich eventually made its way to the Delaware nurse.

“I immediately burst into tears just to see how well he looked,” Smythe said.

As for Amirault, he says now he is going to learn CPR.

“We’ve thanked them from the bottom of our hearts,” Amirault said. “They don’t want the recognition, they were just doing what they normally do.”

Amirault, Smythe, and the others who helped save the runner's life are all hoping to meet in Key West next January so they can all walk the half marathon together.

WHAT YOU MISSED YESTERDAY

Abuse Routine in Slain Montco Teen's Home: Ex-Foster Kids: Before her torturous death, Grace Packer grew up in a hell of emotional, physical and sexual abuse, according to three children fostered by the adoptive mother who now stands charged, along with her boyfriend, of killing and dismembering the 14-year-old girl as part of a barbaric rape-murder fantasy. Police say Sara Packer, a former county adoptions supervisor, watched as her boyfriend, Jacob Sullivan, beat and raped Grace, who was then bound, gagged and left to die in a sweltering attic. Returning the next day and finding Grace still alive, Sullivan strangled her, court documents say. They stored her body in cat litter for months, then hacked it up and dumped it in a remote area where hunters found it in October, police said. In separate interviews with The Associated Press, the now-grown former foster daughters, all of whom lived with Sara Packer several years before Grace's rape and murder, said Sara abused her adopted daughter and clearly favored Grace's biological brother, who was also adopted.

NJ Becomes 1st State to Offer New Parents Free ‘Baby Boxes’

New Jersey has become the first state where expectant parents can get a free “baby box” for their newborn.

Baby boxes come with diapers, wipes, a sleeping box and other goodies that are worth about $150. Expectant parents in New Jersey just need to complete a short parenting education course online to get their free baby box.

The Baby Box Co. announced the new program Thursday. It looks to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and provide a safe start for newborns in the state by providing their parents with potentially life-saving boxes.

The New Jersey Child Fatality and Near Fatality Review Board (CFNFRB) is supporting the program using a grant from the CDC, which reviews fatalities and near-fatalities of children to help prevent them in the future.

The program will distribute 105,000 Baby Boxes in 2017, according to Baby Box Co.

The use of baby boxes has been credited with helping Finland achieve one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates.

Parents can pick up their baby boxes at Cooper University Healthcare, Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative and other locations. They can also have them delivered to their home.

Here’s how New Jersey parents can get a free baby box:

1. Register for free online at babyboxuniversity.com as a New Jersey resident. Be sure to include your correct contact information, including mailing address.

2. Watch the 10-15 minute New Jersey syllabus at babyboxuniversity.com. After taking a short quiz, you will receive a certificate of completion and be able to select local pick-up or direct delivery of your Baby Box.

3. If you select direct delivery, your Baby Box will ship to the address you provided when you registered on Baby Box University. If you select local pick up, bring your Baby Box University certificate to the closest participating distribution partner to collect your Baby Box.

6 NJ Teens Face Charges for Social Media Child Porn: Pros.

Six teens are facing child pornography and cyber harassment charges after posting nude photos of minors to social media, officials from the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office said Thursday.

The suspects were arrested over the course of the last few weeks as a result of a joint investigation between the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office, Passaic County Sherriff, and the Paterson and North Haledon Police Chiefs, officials said. All suspects were released into the custody of their guardians.

Authorities said a 14-year-old by and two 15-year-old girls, the hosts of the social media accounts, face charge of maintaining child pornography and file sharing. All six teens face charges of distributing child pornography, possession of child pornography, invasion of privacy and cyber harassment.

The three hosts allegedly created social media "purge" accounts to host the illicit images requested from other underage users, authorities said. Three boys, ages 14 and 15, then distributed the images and posted them to the accounts without users' consent.

During the course of the investigation, a 13-year-old and two 15-year-old girls were identified as victims, according to authorities.

Officials said once law enforcement officials became aware of the pages, the Passaic County Sheriff Office's Internet Crimes Against Children Unit contacted the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and the pages were taken down.

Organizers Put Brakes on 2017 Manayunk Bike Race

$

There will be no professional cyclists climbing the Manayunk Wall this year.

Without enough sponsorship money to cover race logistics, the organizers of the iconic Philadelphia International Cycling Classic called off the 2017 race along the Schuylkill River and into Manayunk.

"Regrettably, even after extensive fundraising efforts, we were not able to find enough sponsors interested in covering the $1 million cost of the bike race to host it this year," said representatives from the City of Philadelphia Managing Director’s office in a news release.

Organizers hoped to get enough money to put on the event in 2018. They called the decision to can the 2017 a difficult one.

"The decision did not come easy for the City of Philadelphia," said race director Robin Morton of g4 Productions. "We’ve been moving forward with plans for the race and changes to the course for months. We are keeping our hopes high for PICC to return next year."

Dating back to the 1980s, the race looping from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, down Kelly Drive and into Manayunk normally draws thousands of spectators, many gathered along the uphill portion of the Manayunk Wall.

"We were saddened to learn that the Philadelphia Cycling Classic will not be returning in 2017," USA Cycling’s Vice President of National Events Micah Rice said. "This event has been a cornerstone of the US professional racing landscape for over three decades. While it is the nature of major events to sometimes run their course, we are excited about the overall health of the US domestic racing calendar and the addition of other quality races. We hope that the City of Philadelphia will be able to bring back this prestigious event in the future."

The race brought throngs of partiers out to Manayunk each year and the cost to keep the spectators safe became prohibitive, said business leaders.

"This is not a surprising development," said Jane Lipton, executive director of the Manayunk Development Corporation. "The many fans of and participants in the race know it has been scaled back over the past couple of years in response to budget shortfalls. The grim reality is that security costs to stage large-scale events of this nature have spiraled nearly out-of-control. In the aftermath of the Boston Marathon tragedy and, more recently, the terrorist attacks in Paris and Germany, Homeland Security and local police are mandating that extraordinary and costly security measures be put in place before granting permission to host these types of large, outdoor events. The city did everything it could to try to salvage the race for this year, but there just wasn’t enough money available to cover the rising event costs as a result of heightened security demands."

Morton hoped for a sponsor able to cover increased security costs to come along.

"We are hoping for a savior," she said. "I think it would have to happen quickly but if somebody were to step up that would be wonderful news for everybody. It's a fabulous event. It would be a shame for it to die. Hopefully somebody out there will step up to the plate and help keep the tradition alive." [[247269581, C]]
