Pregnant Woman, Beau Among 3 Killed by Masked Gunmen in NJ

A pregnant woman and her boyfriend were among three people killed when masked gunmen jumped out of a U-Haul rental truck in a Jersey City neighborhood and ambushed them in an apartment, law enforcement sources tell NBC 4 New York.

According to the sources, one of the masked men stole a gold chain from the boyfriend that the boyfriend had previously stolen from someone else. The masked man taunted the boyfriend over the theft on social media, and, perhaps fearing the boyfriend would retaliate, got two people to go with him to the boyfriend's apartment to kill him preemptively, the sources said.

The masked crew pulled up to the boyfriend's Fulton Avenue apartment in a U-Haul around 10 p.m. Monday and shot him and his girlfriend. A third person, a member of the masked group, died in the shooting, and authorities believe he was inadvertently shot by a member of his own crew, the sources say.

The two surviving suspects fled on foot after the shooting; the U-Haul they had used was recovered.

The victims have been identified as 25-year-old Janaya Lee, 26-year-old Ishear Bailey and 31-year-old Quadel Chisolm. Lee and Bailey had been shot multiple times; Chisolm was found shot once in the entrance hallway. A law enforcement source says the two men who died were known to police.

Temple University asked students and staff to avoid the area near the college’s engineering building Tuesday morning as the Philadelphia Police Bomb Squad investigated a pair of suspicious items.

The Philadelphia university sent out a "TU Alert" around 9:15 a.m. urging people to avoid the area around the College of Engineering at N 12th and W Norris streets in North Philadelphia due to a suspicious device.

No injuries were reported as about 300 students and staff evacuated the building, said Philadelphia Police.

Police actually found two devices: one a 4x4 wrapped package with orange and red wires exposed found on a loading dock and the other found inside a trash truck, said investigators.

The Philadelphia Police Bomb Squad gave the all clear around 10:30 a.m.

All other classes on campus continued as normal Tuesday, said Temple.

Philly DA Hit with Biggest Ethics Board Fine in History

The Philadelphia Ethics Board doled out a $62,000 fine to District Attorney Seth Williams for his failure to disclose five sources of income and 89 gifts, the board said in a statement Tuesday.

The fine is the largest in the board's 10-year history and includes a first-of-its-kind recovery clause as well, the statement said.

In addition to the fine, Williams must pay the city $2,840 for the value of the gifts he received.

"Among the gifts District Attorney Williams failed to disclose in his Original Statements were 20 gifts from individuals who had a financial interest that the District Attorney was able to substantially affect through official action at the time they gave the gifts," the Ethics Board said.

Williams is also required to amend his statements of financial interest to the city within 30 days.

A message left for Williams' spokesman was not immediately returned.

Williams has been under investigation by the ethics board since August. He also has reportedly been under investigation by the FBI since September for a charitable foundation in his name.

Williams first told NBC10 in September that he was cooperating with the ethics board.

"I want to say I made a mistake in not reporting gifts from very close friends and very close family," Williams said in an interview Sept. 21. "And because of that I sincerely and humbly apologize to the citizens of Philadelphia."

Inauguration Day Forecast: Rainy and Warm

$
0
0

INAUGURATION: WET, BUT NOT COLD
It won’t be the warmest inauguration day in history, but it will be one of the warmest. Compare the predicted 49 degrees to the SEVEN degrees for President Reagan’s 2nd inauguration, with reported wind chills down to 20 degrees below zero! Curiously enough, President Reagan’s first inauguration was the warmest in history, at 55 degrees.

There have been quite a few inauguration days when it rained or snowed-in some cases, a lot. President Kennedy took the oath with 8 inches of fresh snow on the ground, which had fallen overnight and into the morning. William H. Taft suffered through a 10 inch snowstorm and strong winds. Grover Cleveland in 1893 took the oath under a frigid wind and snow.

And as for rain, one time it was even so bad it might have led to the death of the new President. In 1841, William Henry Harrison did more than make the mistake of taking the oath in the pouring rain WITHOUT A COAT OR HAT. He also spoke for nearly two hours, ending up with pneumonia and then died about a month later.

SO HOW DOES FRIDAY LOOK?
Wet. Here’s the predicted map for 1 p.m. Friday from the Canadian model:

The European model is a little slower, with rain holding off until after 2pm. A compromise forecast brings the rain in shortly before noon and becoming steady in the afternoon. But it also looks to be on the light side. Not much wind is expected, so it won’t be too uncomfortable. But if you’re headed there, take the rain gear. If you don’t need it in the morning, it’s pretty clear you’ll need it before the end of the day.

MAJOR CHANGES FOR FEBRUARY?
It’s clear that much of the second half of January is going to feature very mild weather compared to normal over much of the country, and even much of Canada. Here is the current map of temperatures around 5000 feet. Central and Southern Canada are nearly off the charts with above normal temps. And the entire eastern half of the U.S. is WAAAAY above normal. On the other hand, incredible cold is over Alaska.

That is clearly an extreme pattern, but it’s going to change. Look at the same type of map about ten days from now. The tremendous warmth continues in Southern and Central Canada. But a big piece of the Alaska bitter cold has dropped down into the western half of the U.S. and is still spreading eastward:

Only a few days later, the cold is now covering nearly the ENTIRE U.S.!

So, by the start of February, the colder pattern will have settled in. Will any storms track that lead to snow? More on that later in the week.

Dead Humpback Whale Stuck Off Jersey Shore

A dead humpback whale weighing approximately 25 tons continued to baffle officials in New Jersey on Tuesday as they struggled to move its body and take DNA samples.

The whale, which stretches roughly 35 feet long, was found stuck on a sandbar just off the coast of Brigantine and Long Beach Island last week. On Tuesday, wildlife authorities were anxious to collect whatever information they could before the body decayed.

"When you have an animal like that coming in, and there's no apparent cause of injuries, we need to examine it," said Bob Schoelkopf from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine.

Authorities have not found any evidence suggesting the whale was killed by a ship, but they do think it died within the past week and is one of many that died along the East Coast in the past year. Several more whales were recently found in Delaware, Sea Isle City in New Jersey and Long Island, New York. The latter was euthanize in September after veterinarians discovered it was malnourished and had neurological abnormalities.

"Whenever you have a large number dying off in a short period of time, there's concern," Schoelkopf said. "You have to wonder what's causing that."

The whale will remain in place until authorities can figure out how to move its massive body safely.

PATCO Delays Cause Headaches for Passengers

PATCO officials say ongoing mechanical issues and a train shortage are the cause of delays that have led to major headaches for their passengers.

PATCO customers have recently voiced their frustrations on social media over lengthy delays, overcrowded platforms and bad service. The problems continued for passengers at PATCO’s Collingswood station Tuesday.

“Normally, what is a 40-minute commute from home to work turned into an hour and a half,” said Huda Brooks Goldman.

PATCO pulled five trains out of service before 9 a.m. Tuesday. One of the trains experienced brake issues, another a motor issue and there was a report of a “burning odor” on a third.

PATCO’s General Manager John Rink released a statement acknowledging that the transit agency “failed to provide the level of service” their passengers expect and deserve.

Rink says crews have been working to maintain and repair trains impacted by the winter weather. In some cases, leftover snow and moisture got into traction motors – a vital part of a train’s propulsion system – and caused them to short out, according to Rink. Rink also says moisture from snow and ice has impacted the braking, air compressors and door mechanisms of their trains.

“Since the snow storm on January 7th, PATCO staff has been continuously replacing traction motors and making other repairs,” Rink wrote. “A total of 21 motors have been replaced since January 8th alone.”

Rink says a normal motor replacement can take six to eight hours.

“If we need to replace both motors, we swap the bad truck with a good spare truck,” he wrote. “This work can take 2-3 hours, sometimes 4-6 hours if shimming is needed.”

Rink also says PATCO’s ongoing Transit Car Overhaul Project has reduced the number of cars available.

PATCO crews are currently working overtime to address the repair backlog, according to Rink.

“Over this past weekend alone, more than 500 person-hours were logged in the maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the train fleet for service on Monday,” Rink wrote.

Passengers told NBC10 they were frustrated but would still stick with PATCO.

“It’s been a bit frustrating,” said Gina Pelle. “But it’s still a little less expensive than parking in the city every day.”

Philadelphia Tops Nation in Rodent Infestations

$

The rat race is real in Philadelphia, which has the dubious honor of containing the most U.S. households infested with rodents.

Almost 20 percent of homes in the City of Brotherly love contain the unwanted critters, topping Boston, New York and Washington, D.C., according to a recent American Housing Survey of 25 metropolitan areas.

While the Northeast corridor is hit hard by rodents - no thanks to crowded urban centers - the East Coast fares better than the South when it comes to cockroaches. Those pests are partial to warm climates and prefer living in New Orleans, Houston, Miami and Atlanta, according to the survey.

Philadelphia, Boston, New York and Seattle showed declining numbers of infestations from 2015, Bloomberg reported. Meanwhile, Houston saw an 11 percent increase in roaches and a 12 percent increase in rodents.

The online survey is conducted every two years and asks respondents an array of residential information, including how people finance their homes, whether their houses are musty and if they think their neighborhoods are safe.
