Pa. Beer Drinkers Can Raise a Bottle to Looser Rules

Pennsylvania drinkers will get a new reason to celebrate on Tuesday, when looser regulations on beer retailers go into effect, letting them sell any quantity, including individual 32-ounce bottles, six-packs and growlers.

The state's 1,200 distributors were once largely limited to selling cases and kegs, one reason Pennsylvania's alcohol rules were widely considered among the nation's most restrictive.

That changed about two years ago, when retailers were allowed to sell 12-packs.

The new law is literally transforming many of the retailers, who have been making physical changes to their stores to accommodate the changes and the expected demand.

Mark Tanczos, owner of Tanczos Beverages in Bethlehem, has spent thousands to install a growler station, put in new racks and add a cooler.

"Consumers used to be happy with one or two selections," Tanczos said. "Now, if you're going to have an event at home, you don't have one or two selections, you have six or more."

Tanczos said he expects to see customers picking up one or two bottles of craft beer — a cheaper way to try something new.

"If you have a location that sells a lot of craft beer now, you probably could do pretty well with growlers, but if you're more of a bread-and-butter domestic (beer) location, you probably won't do as well," he said.

The law signed by Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf in November also lets bars start selling booze at 9 a.m. on Sundays, without a requirement they also serve food. State residents may now join "beer-of-the-month" clubs that ship to their homes directly. And sporting venues may sell mixed drinks. [[238427591, C]]

Bill's Blog: Warmer Temps With Rain Likely

$

Hold on to your thermometer, normally cold winter temperatures are set to take a break this week! The warming trend starts Monday as Morning temperatures that dropped to well below freezing began warming up nicely.

The nicer weather is timed perfectly for MLK Day activities. Although the sunshine will start to fade with clouds increasing in the afternoon, it will stay dry through the evening and won't be as cold Monday night.

The timing of the clouds is key. With their arrival late Monday into the evening, temperatures will not get as cold, making it likely that most neighborhoods will be warm enough to only see rain Tuesday. However, those first showers may produce light rain or light freezing rain before sunrise in the colder Lehigh Valley neighborhoods, but this area will likely only get rain after sunrise as it will warm above freezing during the day.

Rain showers will be on and off during the day Tuesday.

The First Alert hour-by-hour Futurecast shows the possibility of moderate showers in the Pennsylvania suburbs Tuesday evening.

After Tuesday's rain, let the milder weather begin! The average high temperature for Philadelphia in January is 40 degrees, but, we'll be in the 50s starting Wednesday.

There will be more periods of wet weather with this mild air, but as the 10-Day on 10 shows, it will only be rain.

Drivers Strike, Kill Man in NJ

A young man was struck and killed while crossing Route 22 in Bridgewater, New Jersey Sunday night, police say, marking the fourth pedestrian death on the stretch of road in the last five months.

The victim in Sunday's incident has not been identified, but police say he was between 20 and 30 years old. He was in the center lane of traffic when he was struck, police said. The driver in the crash has not been charged.

The three other young people recently killed on the same roadway were also struck while walking on a one-mile stretch of Route 22 West.

"It's a horrible road," said Dylan Ahlert, who frequently drives there. He noted the speed limit says 55 mph, but he knows people are going faster than that, especially when they've just exited I-287, a larger highway with a 65 mph speed limit.

"I own a business in town, we go down here constantly, the traffic is horrible," he said.

Making matters worse, there are restaurants, car dealers and gas stations on both sides of the highway, people complain. On the three-lane highway, drivers are constantly merging and exiting on the left and right.

"It's a lot of traffic, and people aren't paying attention," said Mike Anastasi, the owner of Bridgewater Diner, near where three of the people were killed. "It's been happening, and it's going to happen again if they don't do anything about it."

Despite the string of pedestrian deaths, the owner of a nearby gas station says he still sees people continue to walk across the highway.

"It's very dangerous," said Bakshish Kumar of Valero gas station. "It takes 20 to 30 minutes to cross the highway. You have to cross three lanes of busy traffic. And they run."

The New Jersey Department of Transportation has promised to make the section of Route 22 safer for both drivers and pedestrians, with better lighting and wider shoulders for cars getting on and off the highway.

A man accused of shooting and killing another man during a robbery inside a West Philadelphia home was arrested Sunday.

Matthew White, 32, is charged with murder, robbery, aggravated assault and other related offenses.

Police say White entered a second floor apartment on the 5400 block of W. Girard Avenue back on January 9th around 10 p.m. and announced a robbery. He then allegedly took out a gun and opened fire, shooting the resident, 32-year-old Barry Jones, in the head. As White fled the scene he fired another shot at a 49-year-old woman who was also at the apartment, police said. The woman was not hurt during the incident.

Jones was taken to the Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center where he died from his injuries shortly after.

Police say White also robbed three women at gunpoint during a different home invasion on January 8th around 10:40 p.m. on the 1300 block of N. 52nd Street. He stole their cellphones and $500, according to investigators.

The B Street Band, a Bruce Springsteen tribute band from New Jersey, has announced it is withdrawing from performing at Donald Trump's inauguration gala.

The band announced its withdrawal from the event on its Facebook page Monday afternoon, citing its respect for Bruce himself.

"With deepest apologies to our fans and the New Jersey Inaugural Ball committee, the B Street Band is withdrawing from performing at this year's inauguration Gala," it said.

"Our decision is based solely on the respect and gratitude we have for Bruce and the E Street Band."

"The Boss" is a high profile Democrat who appeared with Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail.

In a recent interview he questioned whether the president-elect was ready to take office.

During the interview on Marc Maron's "WTF" podcast, Springsteen said he questioned whether Trump "is simply competent enough to do this particular job."

The B Street Band said it would not exist without the talents of Springsteen and his primary backing band the E Street Band, and it looked forward to performing their music for years to come.
