Parked Pickup Truck Rolls Off Snow-Covered Driveway

Saturday’s slippery conditions caused problems for drivers across the area, even the ones who weren’t inside their vehicle.

Video captured a parked pickup truck sliding out of a driveway in Parkesburg, Pennsylvania. Neal Roberts told NBC10 his wife had just arrived home around 1:30 p.m. and parked her pickup truck in their driveway. Conditions were so slippery however that her truck began to slide even though it was in park and the emergency brake was on.

Surveillance video captured the truck hitting the family’s mailbox before coming to a rest. Fortunately no one was hurt and the vehicle wasn’t damaged. Roberts, who had just arrived at the airport from Las Vegas when his wife called and told him what happened, said the situation could have been far worse.

“Luckily there were no cars coming up,” he said. “That would’ve been ugly.”

Saturday’s snow led to accidents throughout the region. No serious injuries were reported however.

One of the most notorious killers in recent Montgomery County history, Rafael Robb, is a free man Sunday after serving 10 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter.

Robb, 66, was sentenced in 2008 to five-to-10 years in state prison after pleading guilty to the slaying of his wife, Ellen Gregory Robb, as she wrapped gifts three days before Christmas in 2006 inside their King of Prussia home.

The State Correctional Institution at Albion confirmed Robb was released from prison in the early morning hours Sunday, 10 years to the day he began his sentence.

It remains unknown if Robb, a once world-renowned economist who taught at the University of Pennsylvania, will return to the house where he beat his wife to death with a metal bar.

The house in the 600 block of Forest Road, Upper Merion, is co-owned by Rafael Robb and the estate of Ellen Gregory Robb, according to county real estate records.

There is some speculation that he may take up residence in Allegheny County near Pittsburgh.

After his release, he will be on parole for 10 years until Jan. 8, 2027, according to court records. He has been ordered to pay $124 million to a trust fund for his daughter, according to published reports.

Uber Driver Accused of Beating Man Unconscious

The director of public safety of Cabrini University is suing Uber, claiming a driver for the ride-sharing company brutally beat him and left him lying unconscious in a pool of blood after refusing to drive him from Philadelphia’s University City section to his Cherry Hill, New Jersey home.

The lawsuit states Joseph Fusco, 30, attended a private holiday party hosted by the security company Allied Universal on December 22 at a University City restaurant. Fusco, who is the public safety director of Cabrini University, says he left the party around 11 p.m. and called Uber for a ride home. The Uber driver arrived in a Toyota Corolla and Fusco got into the front passenger seat, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit alleges Fusco asked the driver to take him to his home in Cherry Hill but the driver refused. When Fusco asked him again, the driver allegedly got out of the vehicle, opened the passenger door and dragged him out of the front seat by his coat collar. The driver then severely beat Fusco and left him lying on the pavement in a pool of blood, according to the lawsuit. The driver also allegedly stomped and kicked Fusco in the face and head while he was already unconscious. He then fled the scene, the lawsuit states.

Fusco claims that even after the brutal beating he was still charged for the 28-minute ride. Two bystanders found him on the sidewalk and called 911. Fusco was taken to Presbyterian Hospital and treated for serious facial injuries and broken bones, according to the lawsuit.

After being released from the hospital, Fusco says he emailed Uber to tell them he was assaulted by the driver. The lawsuit states a representative for Uber told Fusco they would investigate the matter and also offered to reimburse him for the ride he was billed for. Fusco says the company hasn’t contacted him since then and he hasn’t been refunded. The lawsuit also accuses Uber of not cooperating with University of Pennsylvania police in the investigation by not giving them the proper information on the driver, including his full name and license plate number.

A spokesperson for Uber declined to give NBC10 a formal comment on the incident due to the pending litigation. The spokesperson did claim however that Uber is cooperating with the police investigation in spite of the lawsuit’s claims and that the driver accused of assaulting Fusco was banned from the company. The spokesperson also said Fusco was refunded for his fare and that he did not notify the company about the attack on the date of the incident.

The University of Pennsylvania Police Department did not confirm or deny the claims from the lawsuit or Uber but instead told NBC10 they were investigating.

Street Collapses, Swallows Up Car After Water Main Break

A street collapsed and swallowed up a car following a water main break in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia Sunday morning.

The street collapse occurred around 9 a.m. on East Boston Street as crews from the Philadelphia Water Department responded to a water main break. The collapse swallowed up one car while another teetered on the edge.

“We noticed the water department come down the street,” said Joe Sergi, who lives in the neighborhood. “They got out and were walking around. I told my wife to go to the door to see what was going on. She opened the door and two cars fell right in the sink hole.”

Bennett Daniels’ Subaru didn’t completely fall in the hole but is teetering on the edge.

“I’m a student so I don’t have too much income,” Daniels said. “I rely on my car for the small jobs that I do get.”

Water Department officials say a broken sewer likely caused the water main break. Residents on the block are without water while about half the block is also without gas, meaning no heat on a bitter cold night.

“I have no water so that’s a little bit of an issue,” said Steve Petroski, another homeowner on the street. “I have to find somewhere to get a shower tonight.”

Crews with the Water Department will continue working Monday. Even after all utilities are restored however, repairing the road will take even longer.
