The Last Power Outage

It took more than one week but on Wednesday morning PECO announced that they were finally restoring power to the last customer left in the dark by a massive ice storm.

Nine days after the ice storm struck, that last home would hopefully be back online.

PECO didn’t say where the home is located but did say that it was the last storm-related outage in the region. Some other scattered outages in the area Wednesday morning were caused by other issues, according to the utility.

With a nor’easter headed this way, crews from other towns planned to stay in the area in case they would be needed.

PECO spokesman Ben Armstrong told NBC10.com that the utility hoped the coming storm, which could dump one foot or more of snow in some areas, is more like the snowstorm early last week than the ice storm that hit midweek.

“We had about 60,000 customers impacted by that heavy wet snow,” said Armstrong.

That is a far cry from the 715,000 customers knocked out by the ice.

The Cox family of Glenside, Pa. only got their power back Tuesday night.

“It was so cold in here that you could hear the plaster cracking and the paint cracking,” said Barbara Cox.

The Cox family like many others stockpiled blankets and food in hopes they wouldn’t need to use them in the aftermath of the coming storm.

Pickup Catches Fire, Stops Traffic

A pickup truck engulfed in flames closed a major area roadway this morning.

The fire closed U.S. Route 202 southbound near Route 29 in Malvern, Pa. around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday.

The fire was quickly extinguished but the damage was done as traffic was stopped southbound and a gaper delay slowed traffic northbound.

No injuries were immediately reported.

It took about 45 minutes to clear the truck fire.

A crash a short time later in the nearby northbound lanes also caused traffic delays, according to NBC10.com's Jillian Mele.

Worker Put Razors in Butter: Cops

A supermarket employee has been arrested after razor blades were found inside two packages of butter sold at the New Jersey store.

The 22-year-old worker was charged with food product tampering in connection with the blades found by Best Market customers last month, police said.

The blades were found inside sticks of Kerrygold butter bought at the Holmdel store.

At the time, Best Market said it pulled all Kerrygold butter from its stores and was having store managers inspect each package for signs of tampering. All the Kerrygold butter from the Holmdel store was turned over to the FDA.

The supermarket chain said in a statement: "Best Market would like to assure its customers that after this thorough review, all items for sale on our shelves are believed to be unaltered."

"Veep" Meets Veep

Politics and pop culture met cute at the White House State Dinner Tuesday night when a fictional vice president found herself seated next to the real vice president.

"Veep" star Julia Louis-Dreyfus posted a picture to her Twitter account featuring herself and a beaming Joe Biden at the dinner in honor of French President Francois Hollande. "That was an unforgettable evening," read the accompanying caption, "Thank u @JoeBiden @BarackObama @MichelleObama"

When asked by a reporter to name her favorite part of the evening Louis-Dreyfus pointed at Biden. "Look who I'm sitting next to," she replied according to USA Today.

With a laugh, Biden interrupted the exchange saying, "Hey, stop screwin' around, she's my date," before quickly adding, "Just kidding!"

Louis-Dreyfus' actual "date" for the evening was her father Gerard Louis-Dreyfus.

It’s not the first time the real and fake vice presidents have met. Last April Louis-Dreyfus stopped by Mr. Biden’s office for lunch and the two were photographed together.

"I came to have lunch with Vice President Joe Biden and I surprised him by sitting at his desk," Louis-Dreyfus said after the first meeting. "So he thought he'd just ask my advice on some various briefs he had to deal with and I was happy to give him my advice which he paid no attention to whatsoever, which is why he's such a wise Vice President."

The State Dinner reunion occured the same week HBO released a teaser trailer for the third season of "Veep" showing the Emmy-winning actor as Vice President Selena Gomez attempting to tackle the big political issues, and an unfortunately placed array of red, white and blue balloons.

"Veep" returns to HBO on April 6. Watch the trailer below:

Snow Emergency for Philly

0
0

Philadelphia is now in a snow emergency as a major storm continues to move through the region.

The nor'easter, which moved in around 9 p.m., will batter the area for a full 24 hours -- not moving out until late Thursday night.

NBC10 First Alert Chief Meteorologist Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz says the “worst of the storm” should happen early Thursday morning and believes parts of the area, including Philadelphia, could have at least eight inches of snow on the ground by 6 a.m.

Mayor Nutter declared a state of emergency in Philadelphia that took effect at 8 p.m. tonight. He also canceled Thursday and Friday trash collection and said the city plans to collect trash as regular on Monday despite the President's Day holiday. All offices will be closed on Thursday and only essential personnel will be asked to come in.

During a press conference at 5 p.m., Nutter advised Philly residents to stay off roadways during the storm unless it was absolutely necessary.

"When you wake up, there will more than likely be six to seven inches of snow already on the ground," Nutter said. "Heavy, wet snow is anticipated."

While SEPTA will be running, Nutter says bus routes may be impacted by the storm.

Within six hours of the end of the storm, residents must clear a path of at least 36 inches on their sidewalk, including curb cuts. To report a sidewalk that has not been cleared, call the Streets Department Customer Affairs Unit at 215-686-5560.

Nutter also warned residents not to throw snow back onto the streets.

"It's dangerous and disrespectful to the workers who will be out there for a long period of time," Nutter said.

Anyone who is caught throwing snow back onto the streets will face a $75 fine, according to Nutter.

During the snow emergency, all cars must not be parked on the snow emergency routes. View the full list of routes here.

Red Cross President, the Honorable Renee Cardwell Hughes also warned people to not heat their homes with gas ovens, kerosene heaters or similar devices.

"Last week, during the course of the ice storm, 55 people were overcome by carbon monixide poisoning," Hughes said.

CLICK HERE for safety tips on how to handle the extreme cold.

The city's 311 call center will open at 6 a.m. on Thursday. Nutter says all non-emergency calls, including reports of downed trees, should go to 311.

Philadelphia International Airport canceled over 70 flights on Wednesday. To find out if your flight is canceled, call 1-800-PHL-GATE or visit the Philly International website.

If you see a homeless person on the street during the torm, call the Project HOME emergency hotline number at 215-232-1984.

Governor Chris Christie declared a state of emergency for the entire state of New Jersey. All state offices will be closed on Thursday for all non-essential employees.

Shift in Revel Casino Ownership

0
0

New Jersey casino regulators gave final approval Wednesday to an investment firm to be the largest owner of Revel Casino Hotel.

The state Casino Control Commission granted final approval to Chatham Asset Management, a hedge fund that is part of a lender group that emerged with an ownership stake in Revel following its bankruptcy last year.  Chatham owns 28 percent of Revel.

But how long any of this lasts is anyone's guess. Revel is considering selling itself or making a second bankruptcy filing.

During a brief hearing before the commission, Evan Ratner, a principal of Chatham, did not discuss the company's future plans. It said last year it is pursuing "strategic options,'' which is code in the industry for looking at a sale or a bankruptcy filing.

Revel already had one Chapter 11 filing last year, which came less than a year after it opened. Chatham was one of the casino's lenders, and emerged with a 22 percent ownership stake in Revel following the bankruptcy.

Ratner said Chatham has since purchased an additional 6 percent ownership stake, and is Revel's largest owner. It received temporary permission from the state last May to be an owner of Revel.

Ratner left the hearing before it ended, and was not present when an official of the Unite-HERE Local 54 union asked the commission to look after the jobs of Revel's workers in any sale.

Ben Begleiter cited media reports that potential purchasers, including Caesars Entertainment and the Seminole Tribe of Florida's Hard Rock International, are looking to acquire the casino.

Patricia Van Woeart was laid off last month from her job in the coffee shop of the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel, which closed on Jan. 13 following a bankruptcy auction.

"When they closed the Atlantic Club, 1600 people lost their jobs - jobs that get you mortgages, a car, braces for your kids," said Van Woeart, who worked for the casino for 17 years. "I'm out of a job through no fault of my own."

"I don't want people at Revel to go through what I'm going through," she said.

Revel opened in April 2012 with great hopes of helping turn around Atlantic City's struggling casino market.  But it has remained mired near the bottom of the city's 11 casinos in terms of the amount of money won from gamblers.

Horse Killed in Drive-By Shooting

A man from the heart of Pennsylvania's Amish country faces charges in a drive-by shooting that killed a horse pulling a buggy with five people inside.

Twenty-two-year-old Timothy Antonio Diggs Jr. of Ronks, Lancaster County, was charged Wednesday with reckless endangerment, cruelty to animals and a weapons charge.

Diggs has been behind bars since Dec. 3 on unrelated burglary charges.

Police said an Amish man reported on Nov. 23 that as a car passed his buggy he heard a firecracker noise but continued to his farm, unaware that the noise was a gunshot.

After arriving home, he discovered his horse was shot in the side. It died before a vet arrived.

The people in the buggy -- an Amish couple and their three young children -- weren't hurt.
