Police Question Man in Killing of 81-Year-Old Store Owner

Philadelphia Police questioned a person of interest overnight in the violent slaying of a popular 81-year-old in her South Philadelphia store on Christmas Eve as the woman's family prepared to bury her.

Police took the man into custody Wednesday night for questioning in the killing of Marie Buck after "developments" came about, said Philadelphia Police Thursday.

"It's just mind boggling to me, I can't understand what would make an individual resort to that level of violence, it's just absolutely ridiculous," said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross. "It's downright evil, when you think about it, because at some point and time you knew who you were firing at."

A man dressed in all black walked into Marie’s Grocery Store at S 6th and Titan streets around 8:50 a.m. Saturday and fired around one dozen shots at Buck, said investigators.

Medics rushed Buck -- who lived on the block and had owned the store for more than four decades -- to Jefferson Hospital where she died a short time later, said police.

Buck's family spent Christmas trying to come to terms with a reason that someone would kill their beloved mother -- a woman who dressed as Santa every Christmas Eve as part of family tradition -- in such a violent manner.

Buck's daughter, Maria Buck, called her mother an angel. Many people in the neighborhood called her "Aunt Marie."

Police said that they had turned over the case to the district attorney's office for potential charges. Ross said that police would release more details if charges are filed.

The announce of possible charges came as Buck's family prepared to lay her to rest. Buck's viewing is set for Thursday night at Baldi Funeral Home along S Broad Street with a funeral Mass set for Friday morning at St. Mary Magdalene De Pazzi Church at 8th and Montrose streets.

Her family says they are donating the cold cuts from her store to Philabundance.

Former Lover Arrested in Slaying of NYC Ex-Teacher, Son

UPDATE: Ex-Student Who Fathered Teacher's Child Killed in Anger Over Boy Being Dressed in Girl's Clothing; Video Shows Him Pacing Outside Apartment on Day of Killings: NYPD

The ex-lover of a former New York City schoolteacher has been arrested on murder charges after the woman and their 4-year-old son were found dead in her Manhattan apartment Monday.

Isaac Duran Infante, 23, was taken into custody Tuesday in the deaths of 36-year-old Felicia Barahona and their 4-year-old son Miguel, and confessed to killing them, a law enforcement source told NBC 4 New York.

The medical examiner has determined Barahona died from strangulation by the electrical cord, and her son died of asphyxia from neck compression.

Duran Infante was a former student of Barahona's, and their son was born from their affair, which began when he was 17 years old.

A source told NBC 4 New York that Duran Infante, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, confessed to the double killing in part because he was dissatisfied with the way his son was being raised by Barahona.

Duran Infante said nothing to reporters as he was led in handcuffs from the police stationhouse where he was interviewed.

His anguished grandmother, who lives in the Bronx, told NBC 4 New York in Spanish she wanted justice and that she knows her grandson is innocent of the charges.

Another relative of Duran Infante, Janiel Santana, said, "It's hard to believe they're dead. When we heard the news, we thought this has got to be a mistake."

The couple shared custody of the child, relatives said. Miguel's father's side of the family was expecting to see the boy for New Year's Eve to give him his Christmas presents.

Barahona lost her job as a science teacher at DeWitt Clinton High School in 2013, shortly after she became pregnant and school administrators learned of her illicit relationship with a student.

Felicia Barahona was found dead, an electrical cord wrapped around her neck, on the living room floor of her West 153rd Street apartment in Hamilton Heights around 8:15 a.m. Monday after the building super was alerted about a smell, police said. Her son Miguel was found unresponsive in a bathtub, police said. Investigators believe the duo had been dead several days.

Neighbors described Miguel as a sweet boy.

"It's sad. It's a little life," said Elia Flores, adding of his mother, "I've known her for a lot of years that she live here."

81-Year-Old Grocery Store Owner Killed Over Gunman's Chain: A feud between the grandson of an 81-year-old South Philadelphia grocery store owner and another man over a piece of jewelry ended in the well-liked woman's murder, homicide detectives said Thursday. Suspected shooter Maurice Green, who believed the grandson stole a valuable chain from him, allegedly sprayed bullets into Marie's Grocery at S. Sixth and Titan streets just before 9 a.m. on Christmas Eve, police officials said at a press conference Thursday afternoon. The findings were released as authorities officially charged Green, 31, with gunning down Marie Buck. Investigators believe Buck was not Green's original target. Clark said the suspect went to the store that day to shoot her grandson, who was due to work that day but didn't show up. Green allegedly told investigators the grandson, who hasn't been named by police, owed him money from an expensive jewelry chain, Clark said. Green estimated the chain's value to be between $5,000 and $10,000.

Robbers Assault Armored Car Guards: Plymouth Township police and federal agents seeking the public's help in finding two men who assaulted and robbed an armored car guard at a mall in suburban Philadelphia earlier this month released surveillance video in hopes of tracking down the robbers. The FBI and the Plymouth Township Police Department jointly released video Wednesday that shows the suspects just prior to the Dec. 19 robbery at the Plymouth Meeting Mall. The men attacked a Loomis guard delivering cash to the Montgomery County mall in a service corridor around 8 a.m. before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of the money. The suspects left the mall in a dark-colored Chevy Tahoe -- with a model date between 1992 and 2000 -- driving off along Plymouth Road toward Butler Pike. The injured guard was taken to an area hospital for treatment but has since been released.

In a sweeping response to election hacking, President Barack Obama on Thursday sanctioned Russian intelligence services and their top officials, kicked out 35 Russian officials and shuttered two Russian-owned compounds in the U.S. It was the strongest action the Obama administration has taken to date to retaliate for a cyberattack.

NJ Scout Leader Petitions to Let Transgender Boy Join Pack

$

The leader of a Maplewood cub scout troop is petitioning the regional Cub Scouts council allow an 8-year-old boy to join the pack after he was kicked out of his Secaucus troop for being transgender.

Cub Scout Pack 20 leader Kyle Hackler told NBC New York Thursday that he disagreed with the Northern New Jersey Council of Boy Scouts' decision to give Joe Maldonado the boot from Pack 87 following complaints from parents.

"It breaks my heart to see that this little boy is going through this situation," he said. "All he wants to do is be with his friends."

Joe was born a girl but has identified as male for more than a year. He joined Pack 87 in Secaucus in October and was asked to leave about a month later, according to The Record. His mother, Kristie Maldonado, said Joe is accepted as a boy at school.

Though he can't cite any specfic reasons for opposition to Joe's membership, Hackler believes that a lack of knowledge about the transgender community and gender identity is what led to his dismissal. He chose to head the Maplewood troop because of the community's open and understanding nature, which is why the decision to give Joe the boot didn't sit well.

"This is a community that's supposed to be understanding," he said. "People who don't understand his situation are upset because they're letting a girl into Boy Scouts. It's deeper than that."

The Northern New Jersey Council of Boy Scouts did not respond to a request for comment.

Boy Scouts of America Spokeswoman Effie Delimarkos said Thursday in a statement to NBC New York that Joe doesn't meet the eligibility requirements to participate in the Cub Scout program. However, the organization did offer information on alternative program options.

"The BSA grants youth membership to Cub Scout to boys in the first through fifth grades, or 7 to 10 years of age," she said. "If needed we defer to the information provided for an individual's birth certificate and their biological sex."

She added that scouting "teaches its youth members and adult leaders to be respectful of other people and individual beliefs."

In a statement earlier this month, Delimarkos said the organization does not restrict members based on sexual orientation, but considers gender identity a separate issue, and that Cub Scout programs are for those identified as boys on their birth certificates.

Hackler said birth certificates aren't a required part of the application process, but noted that there is a question to indicate gender.

Earlier this year, the Boy Scouts told The Associated Press that it would admit transgender children to its coeducational programs, but not to programs that are for boys only, like the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.

Although the private youth organization has the right to do as they choose, Hacker said understanding the complexities of all scouts, transgender members in particular, is important in successfully fostering morality. He implored the Boy Scouts to look beyond the birth certificate, which only tells half the story.

He's got a message for the opposing parents and councilmembers.

"Stop, listen to the situation. Open your mind and you might learn something."

The annual Mummers Parade will make its annual strut down Broad Street on New Year’s Day meaning road closures, parking restrictions and extra safety precautions in Center City and South Philadelphia.

The 2017 parade featuring fancy brigades, string bands, comics and, of course, wenches kicks off at 9 a.m. at City Hall then marches south on Broad Street to Washington Avenue wrapping up around 6 p.m. More than 10,000 men, women and children will participate with thousands more watching along the parade route, said organizers.

After marching down Broad Street -- most years since 1901 the parade went up Broad Street -- the fancies will head to the Pennsylvania Convention Center while spectators and other Mummers head to S 2nd Street in South Philly for post-parade 2nd Street Strut festivities featuring more performances.

The weather is expected to be in the 40s with sun and clouds. The Union League, 15th & JFK, Kimmel Center, Philadelphia High School for Creative & Performing Arts and plenty of other spots along S Broad Street will serve as perfect locations to see all the pageantry. The parade is free but some venues may charge to watch, including bleachers seats in the Convention Center. [[408756435, C]]

Restrictions already went into place Friday as 15th Street was closed from JFK Boulevard to Market Street from 10 a.m. to noon for load-in. Parking along the west side of 15th Street is prohibited until 7 a.m. Monday, said Philadelphia Police.

The 10 a.m. to noon closure is in effect again Saturday as well as 15th Street from JFK Boulevard to Chestnut Street and Market Street from 15th to 16th streets being closed from noon to 6 p.m.

Broad Street, the area around City Hall, Market Street from 15th to 16th streets, 15th Street from Arch to Chestnut streets, JFK Boulevard from 15th to 20th streets and Washington Avenue from 12th to 18th streets will be closed from early Sunday until the parade wraps up between 6 and 7 p.m. There are also a slew of parking restrictions on New Year's Day. [[238430011, C]]

Expect to see police stationed along the parade route as authorities work to keep everyone safe.

With road closures in effect, SEPTA is a great alternative to get down to the parade. SEPTA will be operating buses, trains, trolleys and subways on a Sunday schedule.

Better Times: Montco Township Returns to 5-Day Workweek

More than six years after tough economic times caused a Montgomery County township to turn to a four-day work week, workers will be on the job five days a week in the New Year.

Upper Merion Township announced Friday that the township will turn to a traditional five-day workweek on Jan. 3.

The township – which encompasses King of Prussia, Gulph Mills, part of Wayne and other towns – went to a compressed four-day workweek in 2010 in an effort to lower utility costs and conserve resources during the economic downturn.

The township said it hopes to better serve the community with the five-day workweek that includes township offices being open Monday to Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"Transitioning from a four-day week to a five-day week will allow township staff to provide expanded service to our residents," said supervisor chair Bill Jenaway.

Cosby's Attorney Asks to Have Trial Moved

$

0

The attorney for Bill Cosby in his criminal trial for sexual assault filed a motion Friday to have the case moved out of Montgomery County because, in part, "prospective jurors in Montgomery County have been uniquely subjected to extensive, sustained, and pervasive negative coverage of the case."

The motion did not recommend a new venue for the case, but attorney Brian McMonagle asked Common Pleas Judge Steven O'Neill to either grant the request for hold a hearing to discuss a change of venue further.

McMonagle wrote that widespread coverage of the case, which involves an allegation that Cosby drugged and molested a woman at his Elkins Park home in 2004, has "spread across the globe," but that potential jurors in Montgomery County have been witness to Montgomery County District Attorney "Kevin Steele's use of Mr. Cosby as a political pawn in his campaign for election" last year.

"In October 2015, Mr. Steele repeatedly ran a 30-second campaign ad attacking political rival Bruce Castor for failing to prosecute Mr. Cosby," McMonagle wrote in the motion. "Mr. Steele made his promise to secure a conviction of Mr. Cosby a centerpiece of his campaign, going as far as to brand Mr. Cosby a 'sexual predator,' and thereby unleashing an unrelenting torrent of inflammatory and sensationalist headlines in Montgomery County."

A spokeswoman for the Montgomery County District Attorney's office said in an email that "District Attorney Steele has previously indicated to the Court and to the defense that he will not oppose a change of venue or venire."

O'Neill could rule immediately on the motion, release a ruling in the near future or decide to hold a hearing on it.

Cosby, 79, is scheduled to go on trial in June, with numerous issues still outstanding in the case. Multiple hearings are expected in the first few months of 2017 ahead of the trial.
