Cold Moves Out, Temperatures Rise

A powerful cold front rushed through the region Sunday, bringing a blast of cold temperatures to the area. As a result, Monday morning temperatures were more than 20 degrees cooler than Sunday morning and feel-like temperatures fell to the low teens throughout the morning. Take a look at this temperature anomaly map for the region Monday morning. Colder air overtakes the map:

Cold conditions aren’t expected to last long, though. Compare that map to the temperature anomalies by Christmas Day.

High pressure begins to build into the region through the next several days, which will allow temperatures to rise to the low 40s in Philadelphia Tuesday, and the mid-40s by Wednesday. Both days will remain dry.

The average high temperature Monday is 44 degrees in Philadelphia. By Christmas Day, the average is 42 degrees. So, temperatures will gradually climb above average.

The high pressure center will slip to the south Thursday as a small system passes and brings the chance of rain showers. However, temperatures remain in the mid- to upper-40s and high pressure builds throughout the area through the end of the week. That keeps temperatures warmer than average into the holiday weekend.

No-So-White Christmas

When clouds build, they act as a blanket—keeping temperatures up overnight. The heat of the day cannot release into the atmosphere (clouds slow that process down), and overnight lows aren’t as chilly.  That’s what’s expected to happen by the holiday weekend.

The next system will near us on Saturday, and clouds thicken. As the system moves through Sunday into Monday, enough moisture will pass to give the region slight chances of precipitation. Because temperatures will be warmer -- mid-40s to low-50s in the Tri-state area -- we’re expecting primarily rain. At this point, it also doesn’t appear to be a washout. Instead, some passing showers are possible. Models are not in complete agreement with the rain potential, and it’s still nearly a week out. But, here’s one model projection for Christmas:

So, the rain forecast will need to be monitored as we get closer to the holiday weekend. But for now, it’s looking to be a warmer than-average, not-white-but-wet Christmas.

Woman Shoots at Robber But Accidentally Hits Guard: Police

An armed woman opened fire at a robber who was attacking her but accidentally struck a security guard nearby, according to investigators.

The incident occurred at the Save-a-Lot store on the 5800 block of Pulaski Avenue around 6 a.m. Monday. A 51-year-old woman told police she was trying to walk inside the store but a man, later identified as Brian Prater, 45, was blocking the entrance. The woman said she then called store security and dialed 911 for help. After what the woman described as “several verbal encounters,” Prater charged at her with a large stick and tried to strike her, police said. He also allegedly threw hot coffee on her.

The woman, who happened to be armed, pulled out her revolver and fired two shots at Prater, according to officials. Police say the first shot ricocheted off the ground and struck a 24-year-old security guard who was nearby in his right shin. Prater then fled the scene with the woman’s purse and cellphone, according to investigators.

Responding police officers later found Prater on Rittenhouse Street, officials said. He still had his stick and the woman’s purse and he was taken into custody without incident, according to investigators. Prater, who was not injured during the ordeal, is charged with robbery and theft unlawful taking.

The injured security guard was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to recover. Police say the woman has a valid permit to carry but they are still investigating the incident.

“We don’t want people to just get themselves in situations where they can avoid the escalation to the point where someone is shot,” said Philadelphia Police Captain Malachi Jones. “We’d rather them take evasive action when they can to avoid this from happening.”

The woman's son told NBC10 she's the owner of a daycare. He also said he's glad his mother fought back.

"A gun, a taser, a stick, something," he said. "If it has to be a gun it has to be a gun. If you have to use it, use it."

Woman Searches for Couple in Rittenhouse Proposal Photo

A woman who took an impromptu photo of a man proposing to a woman in Philly’s Rittenhouse Square is now using social media to try and track the couple down.

Claire Gibson, a dog walker, told NBC10 she was walking her client “Patches,” through Rittenhouse Square around 8 p.m. Sunday when she spotted a couple by the Christmas tree.

“I noticed he was holding a box and she was staring at the ring,” Gibson said. “I realized it was a proposal and I was real excited.”

Gibson took out her phone and snapped a picture of the proposal but wanted to wait a few minutes before approaching the couple. Patches had other plans however.

“Patches had to go home and she had to go potty and get warm again,” Gibson said.

When Gibson returned home and looked at the photo she knew she needed to give it to the couple. She posted the picture on Facebook and is asking the public to help track them down.

“I’m sorry if you were waiting until Christmas to announce this to your family and this bursts the bubble for you guys,” Gibson said. “Hopefully we get in touch and hopefully you guys love the picture.”

Gibson hopes the couple is okay with the publicity and believes any couple would want a photo of their engagement. If you know the couple, be sure to email us at PhillyWebTeam@nbcuni.com.

A former New Jersey police officer will spend the next five years behind bars for sexually assaulting a teen girl, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office announced on Monday.

Former Brigantine Police Officer Ralph M. Pereira was arrested in 2014 on accusations he committed sexual acts against a 16-year-old girl while on duty.

One year later, the Atlantic Jury indicted him on 17 criminal counts, including sexual Assault, official Misconduct, and child Endangerment.

The 46-year-old offender pleaded guilty to official misconduct and sexual assault on May 20, 2016. As a result, an Atlantic County Superior Court judge sentenced Pereira to five years in New Jersey State prison, and ordered him to forfeit his right to hold public office.

Pereira must serve two years of his sentence for parole eligibility, the judge said.

He will register as a sex offender upon his prison release, the office said.
