Woman Dies in NJ House Fire

A family is grieving after a woman died and two others were injured following an early morning blaze in New Jersey Sunday.

East Orange firefighters doused the home at 67 Midland Avenue in fire retardant as they tried to knock down the inferno shortly before 5:30 a.m. Investigators said the blaze started as a kitchen fire.

Flames engulfed the entire three-story house, sending embers flying into the air. Parts of a storm drain glowed orange as they fell to the ground. Homes across the street were evacuated as a precaution, displacing dozens of residents into a nearby bus.

Corey Phillips told News 4 that his mother, 72-year-old Maureen Phillips, died in the fire. He was speechless as his loved ones tried to comprehend the loss of their "momma", as she was affectionately referred to by many.

"When they went back in to get momma, the smoke and fire was too much," he said, choking up. "I lost everything, you know?"

"It's sad and it's terrible," said Corey Stevens, a friend of the Phillips family. "It's hard to swallow."

Two people were injured after they leaped to safety from a third floor window, East Orange Public Information Officer Connie Jackson said. The other five residents were safe.

Hours later, all that remained of the completely burnt-down home was charred wood and billowing clouds of smoke. Neighbor Howard Campbell was awakened by the screams coming from next door.

"I heard somebody screaming," he said. "I woke up, I ran to my back door and I see the flame going up."

An empty home under construction that was adjacent to the one where the family lived also burnt down, and at least six other homes have been damaged by the heat, police said. Occupants of those homes have been allowed back inside.

A family of eight lived in the home at the corner of Springdale Avenue, a program manager from the Red Cross disaster program said. Red Cross officials were at the scene to assist and check for smoke alarms.

Friends and neighbors are still reeling from the news, but say now is the time to be the support and glue to the Phillips family like Maureen was to them.

Drivers along City Avenue (U.S. Route 1) should give themselves some extra time this week as PennDOT crews close lanes to improve safety along the busy roadway that divides Montgomery County and West Philadelphia.

The right lane in both the northbound and southbound directions will be closed from Lancaster Avenue (U.S. Route 30 to 54th Street/Old Lancaster Road between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. From Monday to Friday, said PennDOT.

Motorists looking to get around the lane closures can use parallel roads.

The project is part of a $2.9-million plan – from the Schuylkill Expressway (Interstate 76) to Lancaster Avenue – to improve traffic signals and curb ramps along Route 1, said PennDOT. The project is set to be completed by November 2017.

In total, 17 signalized intersections are set to get new wireless communication systems and 74 new ADA ramps are set to be installed by Armour & Sons Electric Inc., of Langhorne, Bucks County in the federally-funded project, said PennDOT.

US Marshals Shoot, Kill Suspect in NE Philadelphia

U.S. Marshals shot and killed a man who allegedly pointed a gun at them when they tried to bring him into custody in Northeast Philadelphia Monday morning.

The agents were on the corner of Hellerman Street and Cranford Avenue around 9:30 a.m. and searching for Kenneth Robledo, 28. Investigators say Robledo was wanted in connection to a shooting that occurred in Philadelphia in July and the marshals were serving a warrant.

Officials say Robledo walked out of the home he was staying in and the agents tried to bring him in. Robledo allegedly ignored their commands and pulled out a gun. That's when the marshals opened fire, striking Robledo several times. He died from his injuries. No marshals or officers were injured during the incident.

Robledo’s mother, Shirley Beal, told NBC10 her son suffered from mental health issues.

“He’s not real, like bright,” Beal said. “He has mental problems so he is a loose cannon. So it doesn’t surprise me.”

Beal said her son called her shortly after the shooting in July. It was the last time she heard from him.

“He was on the run and I haven’t seen him since,” Beal said. “The last thing I heard from him say after he did what he did, he said he didn’t want to live anymore. He was tired of living. I started crying. I said, ‘Please don’t talk like that.’ Then he hung up the phone and that’s the last I heard from him.”

While Beal isn’t shocked by what happened, she says she’s still heartbroken.

“He had the biggest heart ever,” she said while in tears."Sorry."

Officials continue to investigate the incident.

Woman Takes Selfies After Stealing Phone: Police

Police are searching for a woman who they say just couldn’t resist taking selfies after allegedly stealing another person’s phone.

Investigators say a woman dropped her phone while at Shoprite in Absecon, New Jersey back on November 23. The phone was found by a ShopRite employee who turned it into customer service.

After customer service announced the lost cellphone over the PA system, another woman falsely claimed the cellphone was hers, according to investigators.

Police say the suspect then took two selfies which they discovered through the phone’s tracking device. She then disabled the tracking device after taking the photos, according to investigators. Police later posted the photos of the suspect on their Facebook page and are asking anyone who recognizes her to give them a call at 609-641-0667.

“I'm told a proper selfie should be taken from an elevated angle down toward the photographer,” police wrote. “The kids say it's a much more flattering point of view. This sticky fingered selfie taker gets a pass because she obviously was not aware her photo was being taken. We're willing to forgive the photo faux pas but not the crime.”

Fallen Philly Firefighter's Family: Safety Gear Failed Her

The estate of Lt. Joyce Craig, Philadelphia's first female firefighter to die while fighting a fire, has filed suit against 30 equipment manufactures alleging the devices failed to save her life.

Lawyers representing Joyce Craig's 18-year-old and 3-year-old sons filed the wrongful death suit late last week in Philadelphia's Court of Common Pleas, almost two years to the day the decorated 11-year-veteran of the department was killed.

On Dec. 9, 2014, Craig suffocated while trapped in the basement of a burning home along the 1600 block of Middelton Street in West Oak Lane. Craig, who was assigned to Engine 64 in Lawncrest, was working an overtime shift at a different engine when she perished.

Craig's estate alleges her self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), an emergency location device and thermal-protective clothing failed to protect her in the intense blaze. They allege design flaws and failure to withstand heat as points of failure.

"This was a totally foreseeable and preventable tragedy. We now know and will demonstrate at trial that Firefighter Craig never stood a chance at surviving that fire because her equipment – from her personal protective suit to her air tank system – was inadequate," David L. Kwass, an attorney representing the family, said in a statement Monday.

An inspection of Craig's equipment was carried out at the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health following her death. No word what came of that inquiry.

Kwass' Philadelphia-based firm Saltz Mongeluzzi, Barrett & Bendensky is seeking damages in excess of $50,000.

No word yet how some of the companies named in the suit plan on responding.

Clinical laboratory services company Quest Diagnostics announced Monday that it is investigating a third-party hack into an internet application on its network.

The Madison, New Jersey-based Fortune 500 healthcare company said in a press release that on Nov. 26, an unauthorized third party accessed the MyQuest by Care 360 internet application and obtained health information of about 34,000 patients.

In its statement, the company said the data accessed by the third party "included names, dates of birth, lab results and, in some instances, phone numbers."

None of the compromised information included Social Security numbers, credit card, insurance or other financial information, Quest says. The company says it immediately addressed the hack when it was discovered and has notified all affected individuals.

There is an investigation underway, and the company says it is working with a cybersecurity firm to determine the source and cause of the breach.

Anyone with questions on the incident can call Quest Diagnostics at (888) 320-9970 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
