After a nine-month battle with brain cancer, one of Philly's biggest sports fans, 8-year-old Dominic Liples, has passed away.

The Liples family fought and prayed for nine months after doctors found a grade 4 malignant tumor in his brain in March.

“Dominic was very sweet and loving,” said Dominic’s mother, Kira Liples. “He loved to do legos, he loved minions… He loved music. On our long drives to the hospital, he didn’t care about watching something, he wanted to listen to his music.”

After radiation, chemotherapy, surgery and immunotherapy, the Liples learned the tumor had spread to the other side of his brain. Dominic passed away in his parent’s arms in the early morning of December 7.

In memory of Dominic, his family will have a celebration of his life on December 11 at 6 p.m. at Central Bucks West High School. All are welcome to join in on the celebration and are encouraged to wear their favorite Philadelphia sports team jersey.

The Liples said they are “overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support” and admit Dominic would be ecstatic with the 20,000+ likes on the ‘Pray for Dominic’ Facebook page.

You may recognize Dominic and his brother, Ciarlo who has spina bifida, from NBC10’s 2016 Eagles promotional video.

NBC10 First Alert: Wintry Mix on Way to Region

The NBC10 First Alert Weather Team called a First Alert ahead of the wintry mix expected to cross the region Sunday night into Monday morning.

Several factors will affect the timing of the precipitation in the area, and some areas will only experience rain.

[[405824496, C]]

A system sweeping across the middle of the country, and its associated warm front, is the culprit.

While high pressure will build over the region into Sunday, it will quickly be forced out to give way to the next system. This will bring along enough moisture for rain and snow showers.

When warm air behind the front arrives will determine what type of precipitation falls in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and the Pennsylvania suburbs.

Currently, the NBC10 First Alert weather team expects snow showers to begin near the Lehigh Valley and Berks County mid-to-late in the day, around 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

[[405780925, C]]

The snow will spin over the area until around 9 to 10 p.m. Precipitation is likely to take a break at this time, but conditions will remain cold.

[[405781665, C]]

By midnight, the next round of rain and snow will move in with the warm front. Before the warmer air of the front can affect surface temperatures, showers may fall as a rain-snow mix briefly in Philadelphia (shown in pink). It’s more likely a mix will fall in the PA Suburbs, as well as snow in the Lehigh Valley and Berks County. Along Interstate 78 and north, icing concerns will develop as the rain-snow line wobbles north. Accumulation is possible for Lehigh and Berks counties, with a coating for Philadelphia's northern suburbs.

[[405781755, C]]

[[405781815, C]]

In the Lehigh Valley, some freezing rain and sleet is possible during the early hours of Monday. This could lead to dangerous driving conditions during the morning commute, where temperatures will hover around the mid to upper 20s through 6 a.m.

With the warm front, temperatures in the south (Delware and the Shore) will start to rise quickly above freezing through the early morning hours. The timing of the front and the warm air progression will heavily weigh on the morning commute conditions.

The First Alert will remain in effect through the Monday morning commute, until 9 a.m.

How the Winter Weather Will Impact Fantasy Football

$

Several games across the country will be impacted by winter weather this weekend. The Bills/Steelers matchup looks to be a classic frigid football game, and there are plenty of fantasy implications at play between the Pittsburgh combo of Ben Roethlisberger, Ladarius Green and Le’Veon Bell racking up offense, against the solid Bills defense and the running of Mike Gillislee. Conditions will be predictably December in Buffalo, with numbing temps in the 20s, “Feels Like” temps into the teens, and lake effect snow a constant threat, to put a quick coat of white on the field. Expect more running game than passing in these conditions, and with two loaded teams it could easily be one of the better games of the season...Yet not the only one this weekend!

Two of the hottest teams in the game are set to put their streaks and records on the line at a frigid Metlife Stadium Sunday night when the 11-1 Dallas Cowboys meet up with the 8-4 New York Giants. There will be fantasy points galore at stake with this matchup, between Eli Manning and Dak Prescott, wideouts Cole Beasley opposing Sterling Shepard, not to mention Jason Witten. Look for temps to be right around the freezing mark near kickoff, with relatively calm winds. The potent Dallas offense should be wide open in these conditions, but the cold weather adjustments by the Giants can’t be underestimated.

The Monday Night matchup this week pits the high powered New England Patriots against the reputable Baltimore Ravens. Weather conditions at Foxboro on Monday night look to be pretty mild actually, as the southwest flow behind the high pressure system responsible for the Saturday and Sunday chill slides out to sea, combined with a strong frontal boundary that will bring rain during the day, but should clear by gametime. Temps should be in the mid 40s at kickoff so temps won’t be a problem. The weather looks ideal for Tom Brady, Julian Edelman, LaGarrette Blount and possible sleeper pics Dion Lewis and DJ Foster.

Teacher Sentenced for Sending Sexual Videos to Student

A former Bucks County middle school teacher was sentenced Friday for exchanging explicit Facebook videos and photos with one of his students over a series of months.

Joseph Becker, 31, of New Britain Township, was sentenced Friday to 11 1/2 to 23 months in the Bucks County Correctional Facility. He was also placed on five years of concurrent probation.

Becker, a former Pennridge North Middle School mathematics teacher, admitted to carrying on an online sexual relationship with his former student, a 14-year-old girl, said investigators. The relationship began in July 2015 and lasted through December 2015, said the DA. Becker pleaded guilty on June 6 to felony charges of unlawful contact with a minor, disseminating photos or videos of child sex acts, criminal use of a communications facility, corruption of minors and child pornography.

Becker first emailed the girl while she was his student in May, 2015. In July, 2015, Becker began to contact the girl daily on Facebook. The Facebook Messenger messages eventually turned sexual and included photos and video.

Becker, who hails from Chalfont, admitted to not only sending sexual photos and videos to the girl but also receiving sexually-explicit material back.

Investigators said that Becker and the girl also masturbated for each other over Facebook messenger on multiple occasions.

Becker taught eighth grade math, according to the school’s website. Police arrested him at the school in December of 2015. School officials said they weren't aware of Becker's actions until his arrest. He was fired from the school and will never be able to work as a teacher again.

The victim and her parents did not attend Friday's sentencing. Deputy District Attorney Chelsey Jackman read a statement from the girl's mother at the family's request.

“It is my job as a mother to protect her and for the longest time I felt like I failed her. Just like my daughter had to learn that she did not ruin Mr. Becker’s life, that he ruined his own life, I have had to learn that I did not fail as a mother,” she wrote. “I have had to tell myself that this man is manipulative and calculative and would have found a way to pursue my daughter no matter how hard I tried to protect her.”

The mother also wrote that she was offended by Becker's explanation during a court hearing that he was a "good man who made a mistake."

“A good man does not seek out a child…A good man does not tell a child it is ok to send photos because he is married and won’t share them. A good man does not try to seek sexual gratification from a child,” the mother wrote. “These are not things good men do. This wasn’t a mistake Mr. Becker made, this was a choice.”

Becker, who is married and has two young daughters, blamed his actions on emotional problems and marital issues. He claimed he was diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder since his arrest and has undergone therapy to deal with his issues and repair his marriage. A state sexual offenders evaluation board did not recommend Becker be declared a sexually violent predator and stated he is unlikely to re-offend, according to officials.

"[The victim] should not feel responsible for any of this," Becker said. "I was wrong and no one else."

In addition to the sentencing and probation, a Bucks County judge also ordered Becker to continue with his mental health treatment, have no contact with the victim or her family and to have no unsupervised contact with any girls under the age of 18 outside of his own family.

Crews battled a fire at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery.

Firefighters, hazmat teams and Philadelphia police all responded to the one-alarm blaze which started on the Point Breeze side of the refinery on 3144 W. Passyunk Avenue around 10:50 p.m. Saturday. Police also closed streets in the area.

Crews were eventually able to bring the flames under control at 11:49 p.m. No injuries were reported and all workers at the refinery have been accounted for. Officials have not yet revealed the exact cause of the fire.

“We had a small operations upset at the plant that was quickly taken care of," said Cherice Corley, a spokesperson for Philadelphia Energy Solutions. "There is no cause for concern for employees or members of the community. The incident lasted literally minutes and was placed under control by the plant personnel."

Philadelphia Energy Solutions processes approximately 335,000 barrels of crude oil per day, making it the largest oil refining complex on the eastern seaboard, according to the company website.
