Birth on a Plane: Where Was The Mid-Air Baby Actually Born?

0

After a baby was born mid-flight Sunday, many are wondering where the child's birthplace actually is.

On Sunday, a passenger gave birth on a flight that left Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was headed to Orlando, Florida. The flight was diverted to Charleston, South Carolina so the family could be taken to a hospital.

Where is this child then considered a resident? Does it claim residency in Philadelphia, Orlando, Charleston, or the air?

"During international flights, there is an issue of the carrier and where the plane is registered," said Arthur Wolk, an aviation expert from Wolk Law Firm. "Coordinates of the plane are also taken into account when considering nationality."

"If a child of foreign parents with foreign citizenship is born over U.S. soil, the child can claim U.S. citizenship," Wolk added.

We know this child was born over United States soil, so who then issues a birth certificate? Are coordinates at the time of birth taken into account?

"There was a debate years ago whether or not to consider the child a resident of the state it was flying over, but now wherever the plane lands, the hospital the family is taken to issues a birth certificate from that state," said Keith Cianfrani, of Aviation Safety Consultants.

The baby will be considered a resident of Charleston, South Carolina.

Armed Robbers Terrorize Woman Inside Laundromat

Police are searching for two armed robbers who were caught on camera attacking a woman inside an Upper Darby laundromat.

A 39-year-old clerk was working inside a laundromat on the 7100 block of Marshall Road in Upper Darby around 4 a.m. Monday when two masked robbers entered. Surveillance video shows the robbers pushing the woman to the ground and dragging her into a boiler room before locking her inside. One of the robbers goes through her pockets and throws her shoe off. Police say the suspect threatened to kill the woman if she made noise.

“She’s scared to death,” said Upper Darby Police Chief Michael Chitwood. “That was the conversation. Keep quiet or we’ll kill you.”

Police say the second robber, who they believe is a woman, grabbed the keys to the office and stole $200 in cash as well as $400 in quarters. Video shows the robber knocking the quarters to the floor. She then takes off her gloves, steals a bucket and then places the coins inside. The suspect then grabs the victim’s coat before fleeing the scene with the second suspect The victim was not seriously hurt during the incident.

Both suspects were wearing a camouflage-style mask similar to what hunters wear, according to investigators.

“The video is good and there’s no doubt that they’re from the neighborhood,” Chitwood said.

Chitwood referred to the suspects as “urban terrorists” during a press conference.

“Armed with a gun. Wearing a mask. Four o’clock in the morning. That’s what makes somebody an urban terrorist in my opinion,” Chitwood said.

If you have any information on the robbery, please call Upper Darby Police.

Owner Sets Up Santa Village Next to Sex Shop in Delaware

The owner of a Delaware adult toy store is speaking out after she set up a Santa Village for children right next to her business.

Jennifer Layfield told NBC10 there was no local Santa Claus for families to meet in her town and she wanted to change that.

“It just happens to be, I’m a mom and a grand mom that really likes kids,” Layfield said. “I wanted these kids to have a Santa locally.”

Layfield brought in a friend who dressed up as Santa and set up a small house in the parking lot of her business on Lewes Georgetown Highway in Harbeson, Delaware. Her business, however, happens to be the Dragon’s Lair, an adult toy shop.

“Come see Santa that’s what it’s all about,” Layfield said. “I’m not saying come into the shop. I’m not advertising and saying, ‘Oh here’s the bait line, we also have Santa.’”

The Santa house is about 50 feet away from the adult store and there aren’t any signs outside indicating to children what kind of items Layfield sells inside her shop. Layfield told NBC10 most parents don’t even know and those who do don’t bring their children inside.

Layfield says the children meet Santa and get a free toy – a kid’s toy – that she bought herself. Layfield told NBC10 she’s owned the Dragon’s Lair for 25 years and is a good neighbor. Children are not allowed inside her store.

Despite this, Layfield has still seen some comments on Facebook criticizing her actions.

“Block out the fact that I’m a sex shop [owner],” she said. “Just realize that I’m just a person that cares about little people and I want them to be able to see Santa.”

Passenger Tweets About Experience on Diverted Philly Flight

Valentin Vesa was sleeping on his American Airlines flight from Philly to London when he woke up to children crying and adults in distress Sunday night.

Trying to make sense of what was going on, the digital media specialist overheard chatter from neighboring passengers and learned that some people reported a smell of smoke inside the 142-passenger plane.

The crew of Flight AA728— which departed from the Philadelphia International Airport at 9:15 p.m.— took no chances and diverted back to Philly to identify the issue.

While passengers grew impatient and demanded details on the situation, Vesa whipped out his phone and immediately started taking picture and videos.

“I knew that if this [situation] got any worse, people would want to go back and find out what happened. So my first instinct was to document everything that was going on,” he said.

He uploaded the content onto his Twitter account when he received Internet access, posting the images and videos with the hashtag #AA728.

American Airlines reported that Flight AA728 returned due to an electrical odor that came from the aircraft’s oven.

Upon landing at Philly International Airport around 10:47 p.m., scores of emergency service vehicles dashed towards the plane.

[[404852835, C]]

“It was a stressful situation. Everyone was wide awake, looking out their windows, and worried as ever asking each other, ‘Do you see smoke? Do you see flames?’” the Romanian native recalled.

The flight’s 12 crew members directed everyone off the plane as American Airlines prepared a replacement aircraft for the London travelers.

[[404853075, C]]

The plane swap caused a three-hour delay and enraged customers. Despite the inconvenience, the airline’s attentive customer service impressed Vesa.

“[Crew members] gave out food vouchers, snacks, and water," he said. "The Customer Service manager even handled the people like an absolute professional. I remember him saying, ’If you need to vent, vent at me but let my crew do their job.' At that point, there was no distress; we were just waiting to see how long we were going to be delayed.

Vesa kept people updated on the incident through Twitter until the replacement carrier boarded the Flight AA278 passengers at 1:40 a.m. He praised American Airlines for the way the staff and crew treated the passengers.

An American Airlines spokesperson responded to the incident.

“Our flight crews are trained to adapt to any situation [that occurs on the plane]. Their priority is to make sure that passengers are safe. [Flight AA728 crew members] kept passengers as informed on the incident as possible and made sure they were comfortable,” she said.

The replacement plane landed safely to Heathrow Airport in London at 1:41 p.m. local London time.

Glenn's Blog: Rain Then the Arctic Blast

0

FIRST COMES THE RAIN

There’s a lot of rain in the Southern U.S. and much of it is heading our way. It’s a sure bet to hit us Tuesday afternoon and night. Only the details of exact timing and rain amounts are in question. It looks like a nice, sold, soaking rain-just the type to help ease the drought. But it also doesn’t look heavy enough to cause a flood threat.

Here’s the radar showing the big rain area (zoom out to find it).

And here’s what one of our computer models is showing for 8pm Tuesday (around the peak of the event):

The yellow and reddish colors represent heavier rain, so I expect at least a brief period of downpours.

The area in blue is snow, and you’ll notice some of it is dark blue. That represents heavy snow, but it’s mostly confined to the northern part of PA. So, the Poconos could see accumulating snow, perhaps even several inches. Just a bit farther south, and at lower elevations, it should be just about all rain.

THE ARCTIC BLAST

I first had the dramatic drop in temperatures in my forecast from last Tuesday, Nov. 29th. That was Day 10 of our 10-Day forecast. The next day, I had a forecast high of only 39 degrees for Friday, Dec. 9th-a full 10 degrees below normal. See, we can sometimes be precise in a forecast even TEN days in advance. That’s why we are the only ones to do a 10-day forecast every day.

Here is what the Arctic air mass looks like tonight. The coldest air has just moved down into Montana from western Canada, with temperatures near zero:

By the time the arctic air gets here on Friday, it won’t be as severe. Here are the temperatures predicted by one model for first thing Saturday morning:

Those are low temperatures in the 20s. But the wind at the time will probably make it feel like the teens. That’s quite a change from our mild November.

The unseasonably cold weather should last through the weekend, but it won’t be long-lasting….this time. Here’s the forecast from the “Best of the Best” that I’ve described in the past: Ensembles of the European model (the model is run 51 times, and the results averaged):

Those blue and purple colors represent temperatures way below normal on December 15th. It sure looks like December is going to turn out to be a much different type of month than November.
