Every day thousands of animals are euthanized simply because they don’t have a place to call home and a local shelter is trying to do something to give pets a new life in a loving home.

The Animal Care & Control Team of Philadelphia (ACCT) on Hunting Park is again partnering with Best Friend’s Animal Society and Zappos.com to save lives over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

With the Black Friday Home for the Pawlidayz Adoption Event, customers can enjoy fee-waived adoptions on all pets. [[402668095, C]]

"In 2015, we successfully saved over 200 shelter animals by partnering with Zappos and Best Friends, and this year we hope even more people will give the gift of a home to a pet in need." Said Carolyn Fitzgerald, director of lifesaving at ACCT Philly.

The Black Friday Home for the Pawlidayz Adoption Event runs through Monday.

The mission of Best Friends Animal Society, according to their website, is to ensure all pets have a home. "Every day, more than 9,000 dogs and cats are killed in America's shelters," according to the organization.

Each summer, NBC10 and Telemundo62 team up with dozens of shelters to Clear the Shelters, as part of a nationwide pet adoption drive. [[388021752, C]]

Another Alzheimer's Drug Shows Little Benefit for Patients

A once-promising drug to treat Alzheimer's did not help patients remember better or think more clearly, prompting the company to drop plans to market it to people with mild dementia, NBC News reported.

The drug, solanezumab, was designed to clear brain-clogging amyloid plaques, which are a main physical symptom of the disease. Eli Lilly and Co, the company that makes the drug, said that patients with early dementia due to Alzheimer's did not get much benefit from it.

The failed drug is considered a terrible blow for Alzheimer’s researchers, patients and their families. While a handful of drugs exist to treat the disease, companies have been hoping for improvement with a new generation of "magic bullet" drugs, like solanezumab.

Glenn's Blog: Rain on Thanksgiving?

Pretty Nice Overall

Yes, there are chances of rain on Thanksgiving, but most of the holiday weekend looks dry and rather comfortable. Of course, any rain on Thanksgiving could be important, considering the parade and last-minute travel. So let’s start with that...[[402286326, C]]

Thanksgiving Day

First of all, it won’t be nearly as cold Thursday morning as it was Wednesday morning (many places were in the 20s). It will be a cloudy day, and there is a chance of some showers moving through. The details are the tricky part.

Various computer models show the remnants of the impressive rain area to our west (widen out the picture on our interactive radar): [[273571721, C]]

Some of that moisture will be moving into our area Thanksgiving Day. But here’s a great example of “be careful what you’re looking at” -- it could make you think the rain threat is higher than it actually is...

First is the map from one model for 4 p.m. when you look for the “radar” images: [[402733946, C, 512,386]]

That looks pretty wet, doesn’t it? And this is a “high resolution” version of that model, so it should see the detail well. But is it actually saying that it’s going to be really wet? We’re looking at radar here, not the actual weather. Sometimes the rain that radar sees up in the clouds doesn’t reach the ground. So we need to look at the “accumulated rain” to see how much this model suggests will reach the ground: [[402734616, C, 512,386]]

Now, we see the map barely get a color. That suggests only very light rain would be expected by 4 p.m. in the Philadelphia area, and virtually none in New Jersey. Look at the top map again to see what a difference there is!

Other computer models don’t even show any rain at all. And no models show widespread or heavy rain. You can bring an umbrella just in case, but there’s no need to cancel outdoor plans at this point. Temperatures may be a bit below the “normal” of 54 degrees in the afternoon due to clouds. But there will be very little wind, so it won’t feel very cold.

Black Friday

Most computer models now keep us dry, with rain chances at or below 20 percent in all areas. Clouds will once again keep temperatures down a bit, but even a little sunshine could let us reach the mid-50s. It’ll be another day with very little wind. [[280969812, C]]

Rest of the Weekend

Both Saturday and Sunday will feature a lot of sunshine with temperatures near or a little below normal for this time of year. It should be a good bit windier Sunday, with 15-25 mph winds.

Woman Finds Dog in Garbage Bag in Philly Park

A walk in the park turned into a rescue mission for the Philadelphia SPCA after a dog was found inside a trash bag Tuesday night.

Barbara Adams and her dog were walking in Wissahickon Valley Park when they came upon a garbage bag on the trail, under the McCallum Street Bridge. As the pair got closer, they found a dog’s head visible from the bag.

“I turned around and my dog was sniffing at this black plastic bag and when I looked closer, there was a dog’s head sticking out of it,” Adams told the SPCA. “She was looking at me with very, very sad eyes.”

Adams called the PSPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement team who sent two officers to the scene. The pair were able to rescue the emaciated dog and bring it back to the shelter for medical care.

With the help of Adams and the PSCPA, Cranberry, named for the Thanksgiving holiday, is now being cared for by the Shelter’s Hospital team and is in guarded condition.

“In these cases, it’s the first 48 hours, first few days that are the most important to ensure that the animal survives,” said Nicole Wilson, director of PSPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement. “Our goal is to make sure that not only does the animal survive but that we find who’s responsible for this horrific act of cruelty.”

The PSPCA is asking the public for help in identifying the person who is responsible for dumping the dog in the park. Anyone with information can call the cruelty hotline at 866-601-7722.

The PSPCA has also set up a donation page to help Cranberry on her road to recovery.

Deadly NJ Police-Involved Shooting

The man who was shot and killed by police in New Jersey on Tuesday afternoon has been identified as a 23-year-old man who was in a gun battle with a teenager before his death, prosecutors said.

Essex County prosecutors said that Talif Scudder was shot to death by Newark police responding to reports of gunfire at Spencer Street and Lindsley Avenue in Newark. Prosecutors also allege that before Scudder was killed, he shot and wounded a 16-year-old boy.

Scudder was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy remains in critical, but stable condition, at University Hospital.

Prosecutors said that the responding officers were in the area responding to another unrelated shooting that left a woman injured on 18th Avenue.

Prosecutors said on Tuesday that Scudder and the 16-year-old were shooting at each other before police ultimately killed the 23-year-old.

A man who identified himself as Scudder's brother on Tuesday said the man was "too young to die" and that his birthday was coming up in a few weeks.

"I miss Tai, I love Tai. That's my brother, he's gone," he said. "This stuff is messing with me. I'm not gonna sleep, I'm not gonna sleep."

The prosecutor's office is investigating. The state attorney general requires the Essex County prosecutor's office to respond at all police-involved shootings.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call 862-520-3700.
