NJ AG, Bergen Prosecutor Recuse Themselves in Christie Probe

New Jersey's attorney general and Bergen County's top prosecutor have both recused themselves from a case investigating a civilian complaint of official misconduct against Gov. Chris Christie related to the George Washington Bridge lane closures.

Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino and Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal, both appointees of Christie, said they would not be able to investigate the complaint allowed by Judge Roy McGeady last month.

The complainant, activist Bill Brennan, has asked the court that all county prosecutors be disqualified from investigating the case and a special prosecutor to be assigned. Brennan has alleged that Christie knew about the lane closures the day they happened and didn't require his subordinates to reopen the roadway.

Christie has maintained that he didn't know about the lane closures, even as testimony in a criminal trial for one of his former top aides and a former appointee at the Port Authority implied that he and others on his staff knew about the lane realignments.

In a filing on Friday, John L Higgins III, Bergen County's acting first assistant prosecutor, asked that Brennan's motion and that he could investigate the case impartially. Higgins was not appointed to his post by Christie, but was hired to the prosecutor's office as a regular employee.

A hearing on Brennan's motion seeking a special prosecutor is set for Nov. 30.

Christie has maintained that he didn't know about the lane closures, even as testimony in a criminal trial for one of his former top aides and a former appointee at the Port Authority implied that he and others on his staff knew about the lane realignments.

The aide, Bridget Kelly, and appointee, Bill Baroni, were both found guilty of fraud and conspiracy in the case earlier this month. Christie has never been charged in the case.

The superintendent of Council Rock School District in Bucks County sent a letter home to parents Thursday that acknowledged "sadly, we have experienced acts of vandalism and harassment at Council Rock North in the aftermath of Tuesday's presidential election."

Graffiti penned into the stalls of two bathrooms included a swastika and a warning "if Trump wins, watch out" and some Latino students reported "inappropriate comments," district Superintendent Robert Fraser said in the letter.

I cannot emphasize strongly enough how inappropriate these actions are and that they simply will not be tolerated," Fraser wrote, adding that the district has contacted Newtown Township police to investigate the incidents.

In his letter, Fraser listed four occurrences, including graffiti in two different bathrooms and two instances involving Latino students.

Another protest was planned for Thursday evening after Donald Trump's presidential win.

Members of Philly women in Formation said they were "calling on the country to mourn the election of a man and a party whose vision are built on hatred, fear and exclusion toward women, people of color and immigrants." They planned a candlelight vigil at Philadelphia's City Hall for 5 p.m. as part of protests held across the country.

Organizers said they were gathering for "community members to express their feelings, to find strength in each other, and to move together toward a future where all of us can live free from fear of racial, sexual, and economic violence."

A candlelight vigil, speakers and possible marching was planned.

Around 1,000 people marched through Center City Wednesday night in protest after Donald Trump’s stunning presidential win over what organizers called “massive feelings of anger, unrest and disgust at the outcome of Tuesday night’s presidential election.”

The protests are part of several that have occurred in cities across the country in the aftermath of Trump’s presidential victory, including Oakland and New York.

Wawa fueled Cheltenham residents with excitement Thursday morning as the company unveiled its 500th gas station-food market in the Pa. township.

In a celebration of the historic landmark, Wawa announced they will be offering free any-size coffee to customers all day at the new location, located on 8250 Limekiln Pike.

At 10:30 a.m., the company also organized a special price roll back for fuel for a brief time to celebrate the achievement. Prices for regular gas went as low $1.20 per gallon.

In anticipation of Veterans Day, Wawa hosted a number of activities and awards for members of the U.S. armed forces.

They prepared a care package assembly station at the ribbon-cutting ceremony where people can create a bundle with Wawa coffee, goodies, and write a handwritten letter of appreciation. The package will be sent to deployed troops in time for the holidays.

A returning soldier also received a $500 fuel gift card.

In 20 years since opening its first fuel market, Wawa reached another milestone Thursday by serving its 20 billionth gallon of fuel-- and a recently returned military member was given the honor of pumping it.

Wawa’s Vice President of fuel Brian Schaller said he was glad to have shared the celebration with the men and women who serve this country.

“Today, we honor the associates and customers who have helped us achieve this milestone, as well as our heroes who make our communities and our country such a special place,” Schaller said.

Wawa currently operates more than 730 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Florida.

An Elizabeth drug kingpin who became one of the nation's most wanted fugitives was found guilty of all 19 criminal charges levied against him on Thursday following a two-month trial, the Union County Prosecutor's Office said.

Luqman Abdullah, of Elizabeth, was convicted by a Union County jury Thursday after four days of deliberation, authorities said. He was convicted of a number of charges including first-degree maintaining a controlled dangerous substance production facility, three second-degree weapons offenses, and third-degree money laundering.

The 34-year-old was the primary target of a five-month joint investigation executed by New Jersey State Police and the FBI in 2009, prosecutors said. Officers discovered nearly seven pounds of cocaine, over 800 folds of heroin, three firearms and various drug paraphernalia.

After he was featured on "America's Most Wanted" in November 2009, he surrendered himself to authorities in December 2012.

Abdullah has an extensive criminal background that includes seven felony convictions for crimes ranging from aggravated assault, to burglary, to other drug and weapons offenses. He was also convicted in an incident where he and others kidnapped, shot, and killed a rival drug dealer.

Abdullah will be sentenced on January 6, 2017. The State of New Jersey intends to file a motion for an extended term that could result in a life sentence in state prison.
