NJ Footballer Tries to Rob 2 With Fake Gun: Officials

A Monmouth University football player has been accused of attempting to rob two fellow students with a fake gun, spurring a campus lockdown, prosecutors said.

Keith Williams, 18, was arrested and charged with one count of armed robbery after two female students were allegedly held up on Tuesday evening, according to Monmouth County prosecutors.

Prosecutors said that a gunman wearing a stocking mask approached two female students on campus and demanded their cellphones. When the women refused, he brandished an imitation handgun and the victims ran off without handing over their phones.

Williams was later arrested at his dormitory. It's not clear how authorities identified him as the robber, but prosecutors said there were several security cameras in the area.

Williams didn't have the gun when he was arrested, according to authorities, and police had to keep the lockdown in place until locating the weapon -- which was later determined to be a fake -- shortly before midnight.

Williams is a freshman offensive lineman from Baltimore. A spokesman for the athletics department said he has been suspended indefinitely from the team.

A spokeswoman for the university said officials are "reviewing the situation under the student code of conduct and will take action as appropriate."

Roommate Faces Charges in NJ Hoops Star's Killing

Police have arrested the friend and roommate of a former college basketball star from New Jersey who was found dead in his car in Brooklyn last year, authorities announced Tuesday.

Mark A. Holdbrooks, 49, was arrested Tuesday in the November 2015 killing of 35-year-old Michael Wright, along with an alleged accomplice, David Victor of Brooklyn, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Wright, of Closter, was found killed, with his body covered in a trash bag, inside his car on a street in Midwood on Nov. 5, 2015.

Holdbrooks originally reported Wright missing to Closter police on Nov. 8, 2015, and told investigators he hadn't heard from his close family friend and roommate since Nov. 5.

Police in New York City later found Wright's body in his white Lexus on East 16th Street in Brooklyn. His body was covered by a large garbage bag in the back of the car, and the medical examiner determined he had head trauma.

Prosecutors say Holdbrooks and Victor drugged and murdered Wright in his Closter home, then loaded his body into Wright's car. Victor then allegedly drove the car to Brooklyn, where he abandoned it, while Holdbrooks remained at the Closter home, prosecutors say.

Wright, a 6-foot-8 forward, played three seasons for the University of Arizona. He was drafted by the New York Knicks in 2001, but was waived before the start of the season. Wright then went overseas to play in the European leagues for Turkey and France.

New Jersey-based trainer Dave Paladino, who rehabbed Wright after he was injured while in Europe, recalled visiting Holdbrooks after Wright was found dead.

"Mark answered the door, hugged me, told me Mike loved me, spoke highly of me," Paladino said. "And that was the same man that murdered him."

That was the same Closter home that Wright and Holdbrooks shared with their two young daughters, according to Paladino.

"It's kind of disturbing, now that they have to learn Mark, who was their guardian, is now their father's murderer," he said. "It's very disturbing, very tragic."

Known as the gentle giant, Wright's killing elicited $1,300 in donations from gym members who loved him. Paladino said he gave that money to Holdbrooks.

"It's really strange I handed this man money on Mike's behalf, for his daughter," he said.

Holdbrooks and Victor were arrested Tuesday on charges of murder, weapon possession, desecration of human remains and other counts. It wasn't immediately clear if they had attorneys.

Bail for each man was set at $3 million. The suspects were being held pending extradition from New York to New Jersey.

Two of music’s biggest stars will be trying to get voters to come out on Election Day and vote for Hillary Clinton by rocking Philadelphia this weekend.

Music legend Stevie Wonder will play the intimate CODA Philadelphia along Walnut Street in the Rittenhouse Square area Friday night for a Get Out the Vote performance in support of Clinton. (RSVP for the Stevie Wonder concert.)

The next day, singing superstar Katy Perry will play the Mann Music Center for a Clinton GOTV performance Saturday evening. (RSVP for Katy Perry here.)

You must RSVP, but won't need to make any donation, on Clinton's website for a chance for tickets to each concert. It's not exactly clear how many tickets will be given out to each event. Both Perry and Wonder have been advocates for the Democratic presidential candidate in her race against Republican Donald Trump. Perry performed at the Democratic National Convention this summer and even dressed as Clinton for Halloween.

The campaign says the goal of the concerts is to turn out Clinton voters Tuesday on Election Day. Pennsylvania (with 20 Electoral Votes) is considered a key battleground state on Clinton’s road to 270 Electoral votes.

People driving by a busy Philadelphia intersection that leads to the Schuylkill Expressway called 911 early Thursday to report a fire. When firefighters arrived to put out the flames, they made a grisly discovery, a body.

The body, it wasn’t immediately clear if it was a man or a woman, was discovered on a mattress under an overpass where W Passyunk Avenue meets Interstate 76 that Philadelphia Police describe as a makeshift homeless camp around 2:30 a.m., said Philadelphia Police.

"We don't know if this body was intentionally set on fire or if it was possibly a homeless person who accidentally caught fire while trying to keep warm," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

No one else was in the immediate area when firefighters arrived and there were no outward signs of trauma to the body.

"Any time you find a body fully engulfed in flames... that is unusual," said Small.

The medical examiner was called in to determine how the person died and if any foul play is suspected.

Traffic continued to get by on the ramps as police and firefighters investigated early Thursday.

A Montgomery County zoo mourned the death of a beloved female cougar.

Longtime Elmwood Park Zoo cougar Aurora was euthanized Wednesday morning after exhibiting signs of kidney failure, degenerative joint disease and senility, said the Norristown, Pennsylvania zoo in a news release Thursday. Aurora was 17.

Aurora overcame nearly being blind from bilateral cataracts to live a long life at the zoo after coming to the Philadelphia area to be treated at the University of Pennsylvania’s veterinary hospital exactly 17 years before her death, said the zoo. UPenn veterinarians performed an operation that helped her maintain partial eyesight.

"She never would have survived in the wild past a few months of age," said Dr. Adam Denish, Elmwood Park Zoo’s veterinarian. "Her blindness would have rendered her near helpless. With surgery, she regained her vision for most of her life." [[399843371, C]]

Aurora and her brother Mankato "Became guest favorites and the stars of the zoo's animal collections" after arriving in 1999, said the zoo.

Healthy cougars normally life 8 to 13 years in the wild and 15 to 20 years in captivity, said the zoo, which is considering renovating its current cougar exhibit space to make room for cougar cubs. [[26343834, C]]

Police Charge 2nd Teen in Rittenhouse Square Shooting

The second suspect in an attempted robbery inside Rittenhouse Square last month that left a man shot four times has been identified by police as Raeese Nasir, a teenager from North Philadelphia.

Nasir, 18, turned himself into police last week, police said Thursday. He is charged with attempted murder, criminal conspiracy and robbery, among other charges stemming from the Oct. 11 attack.

The first suspect in the attempted robbery of two people at the Center City park, Mehdi Fraiji, turned himself in a week after the shooting. Fraiji, 17, of South 15th Street near Christian Street, has been charged as an adult in the shooting of a 39-year-old bicyclist who tried to break up an alleged robbery in the center of the downtown park last Tuesday night.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition for four bullet wounds to the mid-section. He has since been released from the hospital.

According to police, Fraiji, who police previously identified as the alleged shooter, and Nasir, of the 4900 block of North Broad Street, approached two people in Rittenhouse Square and announced that it was a robbery. The victim then intervened. That's when Fraiji allegedly took a gun that Nasir was holding and shot the victim.

The alleged robbers then fled without taking anything from the victims. They were last seen running toward 19th and Walnut streets.

Witnesses to the shooting, which occurred at the park along Walnut Street between 18th and 19th streets, took to social media to say gunshots could be heard from sidewalk cafes lining the park. Video from some passersby showed crowded dinner tables on the warm October night.

The robbery victims know each other and cooperated with the investigation, Stanford said.

Delco Man Admits 'Upskirting' 3 Women

A Delaware County man has pleaded guilty to taking pictures up the skirts of three women -- one of whom just happened to be a county prosecutor.

Bobby Hayden, 33, pleaded guilty to charges of invasion of privacy, harassment and disorderly conduct, according to the Delco Times.

The case was prosecuted by the state attorney general because one of the victims was a county prosecutor.

Hayden, from Chester Township, was arrested when that woman realized what he was doing while the two were in a cafe on May 19.

The victim kept her composure — and an eye on Hayden — while she called police.

A second victim reported an incident after Hayden's arrest was publicized and he admitted victimizing a third woman while in custody.

He'll be sentenced Feb. 1.

An engineering graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania killed himself Monday, becoming the 12th student to commit suicide at the Ivy League school since 2013, according to a report by the Daily Pennsylvanian.

Alfredo Abravanel, 22, a native of Athens, Greece, died "unexpectedly" Monday, according to an email sent from the dean of Penn's Engineering Department.

"News like this always saddens us, but the loss of a young life with so much promise is especially devastating," Dean Vijay Kumar wrote Tuesday to students. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Alfredo’s family and friends."

The Daily Pennsylvanian, the university's student newspaper, reported Abravanel is the 12th suicide within the student body since Feb. 2013.

Recent deaths include Amanda Hu, who was found dead inside her apartment Sept. 28, 2014, and Madison Holleran, a former New Jersey track star who died in January of that year.

City officials did not respond to messages left about whether Abravanel killed himself at a Philadelphia gun club Monday afternoon. An initial police report indicated a 22-year-old man died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head at 2:15 p.m. at the Philadelphia Archery and Gun Club in South Philadelphia.

Penn State Fined Record Amount Over Sandusky Case

Penn State is facing a record fine for the way it mishandled the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse case.

The U.S. Department of Education wants to fine the school $2.4 million for failing to disclose what school officials knew about Sandusky's sex crimes.

Sandusky, a football coach under legendary head coach Joe Paterno, was convicted in 2012 of sexually abusing several young boys. Some of the sex crimes occurred on Penn State's campus.

The penalty is punishment for breaking the law known as the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.

"For colleges and universities to be safe spaces for learning and self-development, institutions must ensure student safety -- a part of which is being transparent about incidents on their campuses. Disclosing this information is the law," U.S. Education Under Secretary Ted Mitchell said in a statement Thursday.

The Clery Act requires colleges and universities to report publicly each year the number of criminal offenses on campus. Schools have to give the information to the Department of Education [DOE], which then provides it to the public.

The $2.4 million fine is the largest ever levied by the DOE, nearly 7 times the highest fine to date, which was $357,000 against Eastern Michigan State in 2007.

Just last week, a jury awarded assistant Penn State football coach Mike McQueary $7.3 million in lost wages and damages. McQuearly, a key witness in the trial against Sandusky, testified he told coach Paterno in 2001 that he'd seen Sandusky sexually abusing a boy in a shower inside the school's locker room.

To date, the scandal has cost the school upwards of $100 million in lawsuit settlements to victims and their families, legal fees and penalties assessed by the N.C.A.A., according to a report in the New York Times.

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel said the children -- one 11 months old the other a 6-year-old -- were rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition, but said they were improving during a news conference late Thursday.

Fire crews were on the scene in four minutes and found heavy smoke in the home, said the commissioner. [[399949301, C]]

"You can't see anything, there was a lot of smoke in there... so it's always a real challenge to locate people in these buildings," said Thiel.

Investigators remained on the scene late Thursday looking into the cause of the fire. It wasn't immediately clear if any parents were in the home at the time.

Nearly three million Samsung washing machines are being recalled because the top of the machines can unexpectedly detach during use, causing a broken jaw and other injuries, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Thirty-four washing machine models are subject to the recall, which affects 2.8 million machines sold since March 2011, the agency said Friday.

Nine injuries have been reported, including a broken jaw, as a result of machine tops coming off, among 733 reports of excessive vibration on the machines or the top detaching. Anyone with one of the machines is recommended to use use delicate or waterproof cycles for bedding, water-resistant or bulky items.

Consumers can get a free repair in their home, a rebate toward a new washing machine with free installation or a refund for anyone who purchased one of the recalled machines in the last 30 days.

Samsung is sending out a kit with instructions for safe washing machine use to all known consumers.

Consumers with questions can call Samsung toll-free at 866-264-5636 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET. Read more about the recall at the CPSC website.

The following models are affected by the recall:

NJ Shooting Leaves Tot, Man Dead

A 21-year-old man and a 21-month-old boy were killed in a Thursday night shooting in New Jersey, prosecutors said.

The toddler and his uncle, Morlens Millice, were both pronounced dead after authorities were called to the scene on Cleveland Street in Orange at about 3:40 p.m., according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

The toddler's father, 20-year-old Richie Millien, was shot in the leg and feet. He is currently in the hospital being treated for his injuries. Family members told NBC 4 New York that Millice was released from jail just last week.

A 16-year-old who survived the shooting said he and his family were outdoors when a masked gunman opened fire, and that he followed them upstairs as they ran inside the house.

About a mile from the shooting scene, authorities were spotted dousing a blazing car that matched the description of one reportedly seen in the area around the time of the shooting. It's not yet clear if the burning car is linked to the shooting.

"We lost two lives today in Orange, due to senseless violence which is all too common across our nation," Mayor Dwayne Warren said. "My heart goes out to the families of the victims involved in this tragedy."

Warren said the city is working to equip residents with tools, like the new Orange TipLine, that help law enforcement keep the community safe.

Family members arrived at the victims' home on Cleveland Street Thursday evening, angry and grieving.

"They better find them before I find them," one relative said of the gunman. "They better find them, know that."

The shooting happened down the street from a school, right around dismissal time. One neighbor who didn't want to be named described the chaos.

"We heard 15 gunshots and everyone had to get down and run and look for cover, we didn't know where the bullets were coming from," he said.

An Orange resident who lives near where the burning car with Delaware plates was found said he heard what sounded like firecrackers.

"As we walked by, a car sped down the street," said Patrick Cassidy. "Within five minutes, fire trucks came and there was a torched car."
