Your Trick-or-Treat Forecast

$

It's the last day of October and we’ve got some beautiful weather ahead for Monday, but tonight it gets chilly in a hurry for Halloween trick-or-treating.

The steady, drying breeze blowing Monday morning, will die down later in the day. Monday evening, the recipe for chilly weather this time of year – very dry air in place and clear skies – will be in place. The sun sets just before 6 o'clock, so expect temperatures to be dropping rapidly. Early in the evening the readings will be in the 40s for our entire Philadelphia area.

The later you stay out trick-or-treating the colder it's going to get. So your younger ghosts and goblins might need an extra layer as they go searching for treats. [[399290751, C]]

Also, with a new moon and no clouds to reflect city lights, it will be very dark by 7 o'clock Monday evening. That’ll make it difficult for drivers to see children, especially those dressed in dark costumes. If ghosts and goblins are going to be out after dark, it’s a good idea to have them carry a flashlight to make them more visible to motorists.

Happy Halloween!

Police are looking for a man who they say assaulted and robbed an elderly woman in her home after she hired him to work.

The 83-year-old woman was inside her home on the 1600 block of West Godfrey Ave when the incident occurred Thursday afternoon on Oct. 6.

Police say she had hired the suspect to do various repair jobs at her residence. After a few weeks of working in her home, the man got into a verbal dispute with the woman over payments and then suddenly punched her in the face, investigators said.

The suspect then attempted to place his hand over the woman’s mouth but she fell to the floor and was unable to get up, according to police. After several minutes, the victim got up and realized the suspect had fled the scene with $250 that was in her purse, police said. She was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for head and face injuries.

The suspect— a bearded man with a stocky build, 40-50 years of age— was last seen wearing a gray pullover hoodie, dark colored pants, and a baseball cap with an unknown logo.

If you have any information about this crime or this suspect, please contact the Northwest Detective Division at 215-686-3353/3354.

From former rail tracks, a park will come.

Friends of The Rail Park, a nonprofit, take the next step in fulfilling their vision, inspired by The Promenade Plantee in Paris and the High Line in New York, to bring life to The Rail Park.

The nonprofit was able to raise enough money, through fundraising and advocacy efforts, to begin construction on Phase One of The Rail Park Project.

From June 1 to Sept. 30, residents were able to get a taste of what the park will be like through the Philadelphia Horticultural Society's Pop-Up Garden.

The entire vision is for a 3-mile stretch of unused Reading Railroad lines, connecting 10 neighborhoods from Fairmount Park to Center City, to be transformed to a public park used for community engagement. Phase I of the project includes a quarter-mile stretch from N. Broad and Noble streets extending east and south to Callowhill Street near 11th Street.

This first phase will also include streetscaping along the 1300 Block of Noble Street.

With help from the Center City District and the City of Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, the nonprofit would like to see the Rail Park become a public park and an attraction for residents and tourists.

Friends of the Rail Park will break ground on the project Monday afternoon with Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf in attendance.

The Friends of the Rail Park have support from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Barnes Foundation, the Free Library, the Community College of Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, Asian Arts Initiative and others to bring their vision to life.

The nonprofit said it plans to provide public programming at the park focused on health and wellness, education and arts and culture, and to work with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation to ensure the Rail Park is well maintained and a beautiful and public space.

Construction is expected to begin soon after the groundbreaking and finish in early 2018.

Drum Roll, Please... 3 New Dog Breeds for KCP

Three new breeds make their first official appearance at The Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s National Dog Show this November.

The American Hairless Terrier, the Sloughi and the Pumi, are the newest additions to the American Kennel Club’s 202 breeds and varieties that will be showcased at the annual ‘canine extravaganza.’

The American Hairless Terrier is an energetic, intelligent breed that originates from the year 1972 when one puppy out of a litter of Rat Terriers was born hairless. They make a great companion for those who suffer from allergies as AHTs are known for being hypoallergenic. These dogs have strong hunting instincts and make for great watchdogs.

The Sloughi, pronounced SLOO-ghee, is a medium-large, shorthaired dog that is treasured for its hunting skills and speed. They are known for being graceful, reserved, and quiet while indoors. The Sloughi has a ‘melancholic’ expression and the AKC says the breed ‘has a quiet loyalty to its owner that does not easily waver.’

The Pumi is an energetic and lively breed that is always ready to work. The agile, medium-sized dog excels at herding and always holds a whimsical expression. The Pumi’s coat is a combination of wavy and curly hair and is never smooth or corded.

These breeds, along with the hundreds of others, will be on display at the National Dog Show on November 19 and 20 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania. Tickets to the shows are available online and you can read more about the show right here
