A ramp in New Castle, Delaware is closed after a tractor trailer carrying cows overturned Monday night.

The driver of a tractor trailer which was carrying an unknown number of cows was traveling on I-295 northbound under DE Rt. 141 (Basin Road) around 9:30 p.m. when the vehicle somehow overturned.

Treatment Program at School Closes After Teen's Death

The Residential Treatment program at a Philadelphia school geared toward students with behavioral challenges and disabilities closed more than a week after a teen died following an altercation with staff members.

Debbie Albert, a spokeswoman for Wordsworth Academy, located on Ford Road in Philly's Wynnefield Heights section, told NBC10 the school's Residential Treatment program is ceasing operations following notification by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services' Bureau of Human Service Licensing.

"Wordsworth has a long history in serving youth and families and we remain committed to our mission," Albert wrote in a released statement. "We plan to use this time to improve our Residential Treatment program by enhancing operations, staff training, and our residential facility. The Residential Treatment program currently serves 90 children ranging in age from 10-21, all of whom will be transitioned out to other facilities. All other Wordsworth programs continue to operate."

A 17-year-old student died on Oct. 13 around 9 p.m. after becoming unresponsive on the 4th floor of Wordsworth Academy. Philadelphia Police refused immediate comment but sources close to the investigation told NBC10 that the student -- who had an iPod that didn't belong to him -- began fighting with staff and became unresponsive as workers restrained him.

Medical staff and school staff were in the room as staffers administered first aid and called for Philadelphia medics, said sources.

At no point was the student left alone while unresponsive, said sources.

"Although we are shocked and saddened by this event, it is an ongoing investigation, and we are unable to comment further at this time," said Albert.

The school dates back to 1952.

"The mission of Wordsworth is to provide education, behavioral health and child welfare services to children and youth who are experiencing emotional, behavioral and academic challenges so that they are empowered to reach their potential and lead productive, fulfilling lives," says a message on the school's website.

Man Kidnaps Teen and Sells Her for Sex: Officials

A Trenton man was arrested after he allegedly kidnapped a teen girl with a mental disability and sold her for sex.

Breion Turner, 26, was arrested and charged with human trafficking, kidnapping and endangering the welfare of a child.

The investigation began earlier in October when a 17-year-old girl, who investigators say has a mental disability, returned to her home after running away a week prior. The teen told her mom she had been kidnapped and held against her will by a man who police later identified as Turner.

Investigators say Turner held the girl captive inside a vacant Trenton home for a week. Turner allegedly made the girl perform sexual acts with several men for money and made around $400 off of her. At least one of the sex acts was captured on video, according to officials.

Officials also say Turner drugged the girl with a drink that she initially thought was cough medicine. The girl told investigators Turner threatened to kill her whenever she tried to leave.

Turner, who has five prior convictions, was arrested and is being held at the Mercer County Jail in lieu of $300,000 bail.

Man Steals Car with Child Inside in Mayfair: Police

Police are searching for a man accused of stealing a car with a child inside in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia Monday night.

A 26-year-old woman told police she had parked her car in the parking lot of a bank on the 6500 block of Frankford Avenue shortly before 9 p.m. The woman got out of the car to go to the ATM and left her 6-year-old son in the backseat. That's when a thief ran into the car and drove off.

"While she was working on the ATM doing a transaction she heard her car speed off," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. "That's when she immediately screamed and notified police."

Sean MacCartney, who witnessed the theft, followed the suspect as he fled the scene. The suspect drove about two blocks before he stopped the vehicle on the 6400 block of Charles Street, let the child out and then fled from the scene on foot.

"The way he was driving I knew he was gonna wreck," said MacCartney. "So I figured I'd get him in five blocks. When I hit the car in gear and I went down Charles he already probably looked in the rearview, saw a kid and ripped it over to the side and jumped out. And I was right there, got the kid and ran him to his mom and [the suspect] went into the shadows."

The boy, who was not hurt, was reunited with his mother. Small said the suspect stole the woman's wallet that contained her ID and cash.

While the woman did not see the suspect, police say he was captured on surveillance video from nearby homes. The suspect is described as a white male wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, black pants and white sneakers. He was last seen running east through a driveway off the 6400 block of Charles Street.

"Not only is this individual looking at being charged with auto theft but due to the fact that there was a 6-year-old boy and he drove two blocks, he's also looking at charges of kidnapping," said Small.

If you have any information on the suspect's identity, please call Philadelphia Police.

NBC10's Beloved Sheela Allen-Stephens Dies

Editor's Note: We've lost a beloved member of the NBC10 family. Sheela Allen-Stephens passed away at Bryn Mawr hospital last week. Our Chief Meteorologist, Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz was a dear friend for years. He asked to write about the life Sheela shared with us, and so many of you -- her legacy of laughs. Services are public Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. at Sharon Baptist Church, 3955 Conshohocken Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa.

AN ORIGINAL: SHEELA ALLEN-STEPHENS

One of a Kind

She survived breast cancer, three heart attacks, brain surgery, and diabetes.

She told people that she had more than 25 surgeries in her life.

She was as happily married as any person I ever saw.

She would command any room she was in. People just gravitated toward her. And she could entertain them for hours.

She was the only person I ever heard of who won, time after time, playing video poker at the casinos. No one would believe it -- but I saw it myself.

She had one of the hardest jobs in TV and did it better than anyone: to make people smile and laugh ("Tragedy is easy; comedy is hard")

She was afraid of no one. Who else would yell at George Clooney loud enough to get him out of his trailer for an interview? She yelled: "They’ll fire me if I don’t get this interview!"

And it worked.

She wore more jewelry at any one time than most women accumulate in their lifetime.

She asked for everyone’s birth date. And remembered them all.

She made amazing predictions based on her belief in astrology (and believing she was psychic). Scientists don’t believe in that stuff, of course. But I was speechless after some of her predictions came true.

She was the most interesting person I ever knew. And the funniest, too.

And now she’s gone.

What a Life Story!

I wish I could remember all of the amazing stories Sheela told about her life, and all the amazing people she met over the years. Many of us were skeptical of some of her stories, and then shocked when we found it was true. Here’s an example…

Sheela was a very beautiful woman. When she was single, she was sought after by sports stars, celebrities, and wealthy men. One of them, she told me, was a member of the great Motown group, "The Spinners”. We wondered it was more fantasy than fact.

Years later, Sheela got tickets for us to see a "Spinners" concert in Atlantic City. First row, of course (I figured it was due to her big casino connections). Before the concert, she told me that "Harry" (the name has been changed to protect him) not only dated her, but had proposed to her IN THE MIDDLE OF A LIVE CONCERT. AND SHE YELLED "NO!"

Now, would you believe that?

But after the concert, she took us backstage. And right into the "Spinners" dressing room. One of them saw her, yelled: "Sheela!" and gave her a big hug. "Harry" was in another dressing room, and hugged her too, but he wasn’t enthusiastic about it. Decades later, he was still obviously hurt.

Story After Story After Story

No one could tell a story like Sheela. We sometimes went to her favorite restaurant, a soul food place called "DeBreaux’s" at the Overbrook train station. It was a tiny place, with only a few tables. Sheela commanded the table in the middle, and would tell story after story. We laughed hysterically. So did the complete strangers who came in the door, who were immediately asked VERY personal questions. And they would answer them! Even if it was related to sex. Then that person would sit down with us, continuing the conversation while waiting for their food.

I once had a Saturday lunch there that lasted more than FOUR HOURS! And wasn’t bored for a second.

And Then There Was Lonnie

Lonnie Stephens was a Philly native (Sheela was from New York City). He was Sheela’s designated photographer for all her stories and live shots. They got married in the 80s, and were together 24 hours a day for about 20 years! And they loved each other so much that they probably wished there were even more hours in the day, so they could be together longer.

While Sheela had multiple health problems, Lonnie was always in perfect health. And amazingly strong. And always smiling. Always. But, in 2004, he was suddenly diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Lonnie, the love of Sheela's life, died only months later. Of course, Sheela was devastated. And even more than ten years later, she still told everyone: "I’m married -- just to a dead man!"

After having brain surgery in 2001, Sheela told a reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer, "I’m a dog person, but everybody keeps saying I’m a cat. I’m on my ninth life here." She managed to keep others entertained for another 15 years.

Sheela passed away late last week.

I miss her already.

Video Leads to Firing of Workers at Fast Food Restaurant

Employees at a Philadelphia Checkers restaurant were fired after a Facebook Live video showed them talking about having sex with customers at the restaurant and other unsanitary acts.

The video was posted over the weekend by workers at the Checkers restaurant on the 7000 block of Stenton Avenue. During the 44-minute long video, one of the employees claims that his co-workers have had sex with customers at the restaurant. At one point he also smokes a cigarette in the kitchen, describes how he sometimes handles the food without using gloves, threatens to spit in the food of customers and talks about “washing the floor with burger buns.”

The video went viral and sparked outrage on social media.

[[398269781, C]]

“I’m not gonna say it happens in every fast food restaurant but that one in particular, I wouldn’t eat there,” said Tyrell Beckett.

NBC10 obtained the latest city health inspection report of the Stenton Avenue Checkers. The report showed the restaurant was out of compliance on several cleanliness and hygiene issues.

NBC10 visited the Checkers Monday but the restaurant was closed and a manager inside would not comment. A spokesperson for Checkers later released a statement to NBC10 saying the employees in the video would be fired and the restaurant would be sanitized and re-inspected.

“The behavior of these employees does not meet our high standards for food preparation and guest service, and does not represent the thousands of Checkers employees who do an outstanding job every day,” the spokesperson wrote. “As soon as we became aware of the post, we immediately contacted the franchisee, who proactively closed the restaurant late last night. The employees involved will be terminated, the restaurant will be fully sanitized and re-inspected before it reopens, and all of the team members will be fully retrained.”

Richard Benson, one of the fired employees and the main person speaking in the viral video later spoke with NBC10 claiming the entire thing was a publicity stunt gone wrong. Benson, a local comedian and hip hop artist who had only worked at the Checkers for a few months, said he was trying to promote his music.

"I be doing little publicity stunts," he said. "There wasn't anything going on that I was saying but I was saying it because I knew it would draw attention."

Benson said he deleted the video but it was quickly reposted by someone else and went viral.

"She somehow downloaded the video, put the whole thing up and made it like we were nasty and doing this and we were doing this to their food," he said.

Benson insists the whole thing was a joke and he and his co-workers never did the things he described in the video.

"I wouldn't do that to my community," Benson said. "Now a lot of people don't have jobs because of me and I feel bad. Because it was all a joke."

"I just want to let people know that that's not what was going on. Nothing negative went down in that store. Whoever ordered that day, your food was properly cooked, properly made, properly prepared. We didn't do nothing. We didn't contaminate nothing. Nothing negative."

Kathleen Kane isn't having a good day.

As the disgraced former Pennsylvania attorney general sat in a Norristown courtroom Monday afternoon asking a judge to go easy when sentencing her for a perjury conviction, a meter maid hit Kane's car with a parking ticket.

Well, at least the black Land Rover, she arrived to court in.

[[398237851, C,640,480]]

The $28 ticket was issued for an expiring meter at 1:01 p.m. -- about two hours before she was slapped with a 10 to 23 months jail sentence.

Kane left court in a different black SUV, a Montgomery County police truck, which took her to the county correctional facility in Eagleville for processing.

If the ticket isn't paid in five days, the fine will increase to $38.

Philadelphia detectives have released a surveillance picture of the metal thief they say destroyed a staircase outside the Union League during the heist.

Several different security cameras captured the man walking around the neighborhood with the curved brass railing, which he ripped off the historic club's main entrance early Monday morning.

Police said the man pulled the railing from the front-side stone steps causing the masonry banister and balusters to collapse. Video showing the actual theft was not released.

Built in 1865, the Union League is a national historic landmark.

The man could be seen wrapping up the brass railing in a cloth tarp before wheeling it away on a cart.

A man possibly armed with a gun threw two bodies out of his motel room along a Maryland highway just south of Delaware and was in a standoff with law enforcement Tuesday afternoon, according to a witness.

A witness told NBC10 that she heard about 10 gunshots shortly before 10:30 a.m., which is when the two bodies were pushed out of the room by a man at New Eastern Inn along East Pulaski Highway in Elkton.

Police did confirm the standoff with police, but they did not confirm any fatalities.

Police did not say whether the suspect was alone inside his motel room. A very large contingent of law enforcement surrounded the motel and blocked off a large portion of East Pulaski Highway in the area.

The teenager who surrendered to Philadelphia police Saturday for the alleged robbery attempt and subsequent shooting in Rittenhouse Square has been identified as a nearby resident.

Mehdi Fraiji, 17, of South 15th Street near Christian Street, has been charged as an adult in the shooting of a 39-year-old bicyclist who tried to break up an alleged robbery in the center of the downtown park last Tuesday night.

He surrendered at 4 a.m. Saturday morning, police said.

[[397651321, C]]

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition for four bullet wounds to the mid-section, Chief Inspector Scott Small said. He was expected to survive, Small said at the time.

[[397570011, C]]

Police gave an updated account of the alleged attempted robbery-turned-violent in a statement announcing Fraiji's identity and charges.

The teen and at least one other male robbery approached two people in Rittenhouse Square and announced that it was a robbery. The victim then intervened. That's when Fraiji allegedly took a gun that another robber was holding and shot the victim.

The alleged robbers then fled without taking anything from the victims. They were last seen running toward 19th and Walnut streets.

[[397540561, C]]

Witnesses to the shooting, which occurred at the park along Walnut Street between 18th and 19th streets, took to social media to say gunshots could be heard from sidewalk cafes lining the park. Video from some passersby showed crowded dinner tables on the warm October night.

[[397533701, C]]

[[397533991, C]]

Police Lt. John Stanford said police issued a warrant for the arrest of a 17-year-old. Officials said the teen's parents cooperated in the investigation.

[[397532751, C]]

The robbery victims know each other and cooperated with the investigation, Stanford said.

Memorial Service for 'Intruders' Member Robert Edwards

Funeral arrangements have been made for Robert "Big Sonny" Edwards, one of the original members of the iconic Philadelphia soul music group the Intruders.

A service to celebrate Edwards' life will be held Saturday at the Kingdom Hall Jehova's Witness located at 19th and Somerset in Philadelphia at 1 p.m.

The family celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Olney Arts Center located at 1342 West Chew Avenue.

Edwards passed away Saturday, October 15 after suffering a heart attack on the 11th, his family confirmed with NBC10. Edwards was 74.

Edwards, along with Sam “Little Sonny” Brown, Eugene “Bird” Daughtry and Phil Terry formed the Intruders in 1960 as a doo wop group. They gained widespread fame when they worked with legendary Philadelphia songwriters and record producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff in the mid-60s, becoming pioneers in Philadelphia soul along with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and the O’Jays. The Intruders later signed to Gamble and Huff’s influential record label Philadelphia International Records.

The Intruders recorded several hit songs during their career, including their 1968 single “Cowboys to Girls” which reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The group disbanded in the 1970s and Eugene Daughtry later formed a new lineup in the 1980s without any of the original members. Both Daughtry and Brown passed away in the 1990s. With Edwards' death, Terry is the last surviving original member of the group.

"We love him, we miss him," Edwards' niece told NBC10, "He left a legacy for our family and the city of Philadelphia."
