Gas Leak Forces Evacuations in South Philadelphia

A gas leak forced several people to evacuate their homes in South Philadelphia Sunday afternoon.

Officials say a worker in the basement of a house on 10th and Christian streets struck a gas line, causing a leak. At least 19 homes along the block were evacuated as a result.

"So we ran out with what we had on," said Theresa Miraglia, one of the residents. "Because you know you get scared when you hear gas. There are explosions God forbid."

PECO and PGW crews were able to repair the leak and residents were allowed back inside their homes after several hours.

Eagles Defense Dominates in Win Over Vikings

$

Now that was the Eagles’ defense we saw at the start of the season.

And it completely wrecked Sam Bradford’s return to Philadelphia.

The Eagles didn’t get a ton going offensively Sunday, but they didn’t need to. The offense did just enough late, special teams came up big and Jim Schwartz’s unit was absolutely impenetrable as the Eagles’ beat the Vikings, 21-10, at the Linc.

With the win, the Eagles improved to 4-2 and prevented a three-game losing streak. They also handed the Vikings (5-1) their first loss of the season.

While Schwartz’s defense is predicated on the front four getting pressure without blitzing, he dialed up a ton of them Sunday and really seemed to get Bradford off his game in his return to the Linc.

After taking an 11-3 lead into the second half, the Eagles scored their first offensive touchdown since the Detroit game on the tail end of a 77-yard drive. Carson Wentz hit Dorial Green-Beckham for DGB’s first touchdown as an Eagle.

The Eagles also benefitted from four Vikings turnovers on the day. The Eagles had four turnovers too, but were able to overcome them.

The Eagles have allowed 10 or fewer points in three of their first six games. This is the first time they’ve done that since 2000 and the ninth time they’ve done it in franchise history. They would have held the Vikings to three points without a garbage-time touchdown with 34 seconds left.

Through six games, the Eagles have a point differential of plus-68. That’s the best point differential they’ve had through six games since 2004 (77).

Turning point
Josh Huff returned a second-quarter kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown to give the Eagles’ their first lead of the game. He flipped into the end zone for his second-career kick return touchdown.

This is the first time in Eagles’ history they’ve had back-to-back weeks with kick return touchdowns.

Key stat
The Eagles sacked Bradford six times Sunday and applied constant pressure from everywhere. Sunday was the first six-sack game for the Eagles since 2014.

First half
The Eagles took an 11-3 lead into the locker room after a bizarre first half. The first quarter saw six combined first downs and five turnovers for a 0-0 score after a long 15 minutes.

The second quarter finally brought some scoring. The Vikings kicked things off with a 48-yard Blair Walsh field goal.

The Eagles got on the board when Huff returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards. Then the Eagles added a field goal late in the second quarter.

While the Eagles’ defense blitzed and got to Sam Bradford in the first half, their offense wasn’t great. Carson Wentz completed just 45 percent of his first-half passes for 53 yards and two interceptions.

Still, the Eagles' defense allowed just a field goal and forced the Vikings into three turnovers.

Offensive stud
The offensive line, even with a couple injuries, had a pretty good day protecting Wentz, who wasn’t sacked.

Offensive dud
Wentz didn’t have his best performance. He had just one interception coming into Sunday and threw two in the first half. He did do enough to help the Eagles hang on for the win, though.

Defensive stud
Rodney McLeod had a big game. He had a sack, a forced fumble and an interception all in the first half. McLeod wasn’t the only one. Brandon Graham, Malcolm Jenkins and Connor Barwin also made big plays.

And Schwartz really deserves a game ball. He called an incredible game.

Defensive dud
No Eagle deserves this award from Sunday.

Injuries
Bennie Logan (groin) was inactive after missing practice all week.

The Eagles lost corner Ron Brooks with a right knee injury in the first quarter. It looked serious. Linebacker/special teamer Kamu Grugier-Hill hurt his hamstring and left early.

Brandon Brooks (ankle) left briefly but returned. Jason Peters (bicep) also suffered an injury, but it didn’t seem too serious; he never went into the locker room.

Up next
Two straight division games. The Eagles travel to Dallas next week to face the Cowboys and then drive to North Jersey to face the Giants the following week.

A vehicle carrying marijuana-laced candy caught fire on the Delaware Memorial Bridge Sunday, causing lane closures and a massive backup.

The Weed World Candies truck was traveling from Washington, D.C. to Philadelphia when it caught fire on the northbound side of the bridge around 6 p.m. Two northbound lanes were closed, causing heavy traffic as firefighters responded.

Firefighters were eventually able to bring the flames under control and no injuries were reported, according to bridge authority officials.

Weed World Candies is an organization that launched in 1999 that uses tour vehicles to promote the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana. The company also sells marijuana-laced candy.

Man, Woman Rob Amputee During Home Invasion

Police are searching for a man and woman accused of robbing an amputee during a home invasion early Sunday morning in North Philadelphia.

The 61-year-old victim, who did not want to be identified, began using a wheelchair after his legs were amputated. He told NBC10 he was locking the front door of his home on N. Warnock Street at 1:40 a.m. when a man and woman in their 20s approached him from behind.

“He said he had a gun,” the victim said. “But I didn’t see no gun.”

The suspects forced their way inside the home and pushed the man out of his wheelchair and to the floor. The victim said they used a t-shirt to gag him so that he couldn’t scream for help. They then ransacked his home, stealing his television, cellphone, wallet and other items.

“All the way down to paper towels,” the victim said. “Toilet tissue.”

The suspects left the victim on the floor and then fled through the backdoor of the home.

“I drug myself to the door,” he said. “I opened it.”

The man said he crawled to the door and made his way outside. He then waited for an hour before someone passed by and helped him.

The victim told NBC10 he was also once robbed of his shopping bags before after leaving a store. He believes robbers see him as an easy target because of his disability.

If you have any information on the incident, please call Philadelphia Police.

UberX, Lyft vs. PPA Saga Could End With Senate Vote

$
0
0

The ongoing fight over who can offer people rides around Philadelphia could come to an end Monday as the Pennsylvania Senate considers legislation to permanently legalize ridesharing services like UberX and Lyft.

The Pennsylvania House already approved a change to state law that outlines regulations and taxing for the services.

Under the amended rules, UberX and Lyft will provide funding to the Philadelphia School District and city -- 1.4 percent of their gross receipts.

Ridesharing drivers will be subject to licensing and safety standards set by the Philadelphia Parking Authority. The rules will mimic guidelines taxi and limo drivers must follow.

The app-driven ridesharing services hire everyday people, who use their personal cars, to transport passengers to a destination. Taxi drivers say it's unfair that they pay the PPA high fees for licenses and carry large insurance policies, while UberX and Lyft drivers don't.

Legalization will end a more than year-long fight over the services.

The companies have been in and out of court, fighting the PPA to operate. At times, the PPA suspended the battle to ensure there were enough transports for major events like this summer's Democratic National Convention.

Drivers face heavy fines and impoundment of their vehicles without the PPA's blessing.

The senate is expected to pass the law change without issue. It approved an earlier version of the legislation last year.

4 Juveniles Arrested in Temple University Mob-Style Attacks

Four juveniles were arrested in a series of mob-style attacks on Temple University's campus this weekend that left students hurt, police and university officials said.

Between 25 and 50 young people were taken into custody by Philadelphia police on Friday night for the incidents that happened in the area of Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue, officials said.

The kids were acting rowdy, fighting one another and assaulting Temple students, police said.

Temple spokesman Ray Betzner said Friday the juveniles roved across campus for a few hours playing a "cat-and-mouse game" with officers over the evening. A campus alert warning students and staff was sent around 9:30 p.m.

On Monday, Temple officials said four kids were taken into custody for three incidents. Additional information was not yet available.

One student, who was not identified, told the college news site The Tab she was walking with her boyfriend near 16th and Oxford streets around 8 p.m. when they were attacked by two kids.

"My boyfriend ran and got away but the second I tried to run, they grabbed me by my hair and started beating my head and back," she said.

“I somehow got to the other side of Oxford Street by the time they got me to the ground. I remember shoes coming for my face and after that I heard other kids from the group saying ‘Yo chill, yo chill it’s just a girl’ and they pulled my attackers off me."

Joe Lauletta, a parent of another Temple student, posted an angry message to Facebook and shared with NBC10 about his daughter's apparent attack. She ended up in the emergency room because of the beating, he said.

"These sick animals held her down and kicked and stomped on her repeatedly," he wrote. Lauletta said his daughter and two male friends were exiting the subway, coming home from the Temple football game when they were attacked.

Temple officials didn't have an exact number of students who were injured early Monday, but said the investigation was ongoing.

'Suicide Scar' Makeup Kit Sparks Outrage

Outraged mental health advocates petitioned Walmart to stop selling a 'Suicide Scar Wound' Makeup kit offered on the retailer's website.

Walmart, one of the leading retailers in the United States, can be a one stop shop for Halloween necessities like candy, costumes, and decorations.

This year the site featured a 'Razor Blade Suicide Scar Wound' latex costumer makeup kit. The product, according to Walmart, was not something they put up for sale online, but rather a third-party vendor, that Walmart did not identify.

The title and photo of a razor blade with two bloody slash marks instigated outrage from the community.

One twitter user stated, "I would like to know which part of this is a suitable costume for anyone. Self harm isn't a "scary costume" for all to wear."

A group called Revolving of Doors launched a change.org petition.

"This is not just a disgrace to the sensitivity to those who suffer from self-harm, but a shame on Walmart for making light of the situation," the petition states.

"This 'costume' is real life for many people, many people who are contemplating volumes higher than self-harm," the petition added. "Suicide is not a joke, not a costume, and not funny."

The controversy prompted Walmart to remove the costume from their site over the weekend, telling Facebook followers they too thought it was "unacceptable."

Cops Probe Disappearance of Beyonce Backup Dancer

Police are investigating the disappearance of a 32-year-old celebrity backup dancer from New Jersey who has performed behind the likes of Beyonce and Rihanna.

Shirlene Quigley, who lives alone in North Bergen and teaches dance at Peridance Capezio Center and Broadway Dance Center in Manhattan, according to her Facebook page, was last seen getting on a bus at Port Authority around 1 a.m. Sunday, her father said.

Her father, who lives in California, said Quigley normally calls him every day around 6 p.m., and he became concerned when he hadn't heard from her.

"I just want her to come home, or if someone has her to let her be," the father said. "She's everything to me. She's why I live."

Rihanna called Quigley a "beautiful soul" in an Instagram post that included a video of the missing 32-year-old contemplating peace and love.

"Imagine if we treated each other like we all came from the same family," Quigley says in the video. "If you are in my life, I love you, whether it be 10 seconds or forever, because we're all family."

Missy Elliott posted a collage of Quigley to Instagram, urging people to call police if they have information.

Police say Quigley's phone was found at a bridal store in Chelsea; her father says she could've been there to pick up something for a show.

Quigley's father said his daughter made a strange comment to her friend recently along the lines of "Get ready, it's about to happen and I'm going to need you to sub for me."

Quigley attended Liberty Church in Brooklyn; her father says that she is very religious, and that lately she has seemed "euphoric."

Her landlord saw her leave her New Jersey home Saturday afternoon and later called a friend to say Quigley did not seem well, the friend said.

According to her personal website, Quigley's dance career launched when she was 18 and earned a role as one of the "uhh ohh girls" on Beyonce's "Crazy in Love" music video. She has performed on an array of awards shows, including the VMA's, Grammy's and ESPY Awards.

Quigley created the first high heel dance class at a studio in her hometown of Los Angeles and later brought the workshop to New York City. She has also taught at dance studios around the world, her website says.

Man Steals Railing Outside Union League Causing Collapse

A man ripped a railing off the staircase outside Philadelphia's historic Union League overnight causing a portion of the stone steps to collapse.

The theft happened just after 3 a.m. Monday in front of the private club's main entrance along Broad Street at Sansom, club officials said.

Erica Martin, the Union League's communications director, said the man was spotted pulling the brass railing from the curved stairs on the building's right side.

The theft caused the large stone banister and several balusters to topple over.

It was not immediately how the man was able to rip off the railing.

Martin said the club contacted Philadelphia Police and turned over its surveillance video to assist in the investigation.

"The steps are severely damaged and roped off for the safety of our members, employees and the public," Martin said in a statement. "We will work to restore the staircase to its original condition as soon as possible."

The iconic, eight floor brownstone structure was built in 1865 as a home for the political society founded to support U.S. President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War.

The building was designated a national historic landmark in 1979.
