A woman is in custody after she allegedly set her baby's father's home on fire in West Philadelphia Saturday morning.

Three row homes on the 4900 block of W. Girard Avenue caught fire around 10 a.m. Responding firefighters were able to place the flames under control.

Police later arrested a 26-year-old woman in connection to the fire. Police say the woman went into the home where the father of her child lived, poured kerosene on the floor and then lit it on fire. Neither the man nor their child were inside the home at the time. The woman suffered burns to her hands during the incident, according to investigators.

The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment. She was then charged with arson, reckless endangerment of another person and risking a catastrophe. The woman told police she lit the home on fire because her child's father had stolen $1,000 from her, according to investigators.

A witness told NBC10 she spotted the woman leaving the scene of the fire. According to the witness, the woman said, "I set the house on fire because my boyfriend robbed me."

Police: Woman Who Killed Boyfriend Acted in Self-Defense

Police say a woman acted in self-defense when she stabbed and killed her boyfriend inside their home last month.

On Sept. 12 at 4 a.m., David Mathias III, 59, returned to his trailer on Foster Drive near Falmont Drive in Morrisville, Bucks County where he had lived with his 45-year-old girlfriend of ten years.

Investigators say Mathias, who had been suffering from intense mental health issues, had a related episode and began attacking his girlfriend, who was sleeping in the rear bedroom, with a kitchen steak knife. Police say Mathias’ girlfriend suffered several stab wounds to her hands but was eventually able to gain control of the knife. She then stabbed and killed Mathias.

The woman was taken to the hospital where she underwent surgeries to repair her hands. She is expected to fully recover after participating in a long-term physical therapy program.

An investigation from Bucks County Detectives and the Falls Township Police Department determined Mathias’ girlfriend was defending herself and that the murder was a justifiable homicide.

“This was a very tragic case which, at its conclusion, determined that a very well-respected, peaceful and generous man suffered from a rapid descent into a major mental health problem very late in life which caused the fateful encounter with the victim,” a spokesperson for the Falls Township Police Department wrote.

Investigators say Mathias had received evaluation and treatment for his mental health issues shortly before his death. They also say neither Mathias nor his girlfriend were under the influence of drugs or alcohol during their altercation. Prior to his death, Mathias had never been involved in violent incidents or threatened anyone, investigators said.

A woman was arrested after she allegedly threw Pine-Sol in the face of a responding police officer in Deptford, New Jersey Saturday afternoon.

Deptford police officers responded to Deptford Park Apartments on Pop Moylan Boulevard in Deptford at 2:12 p.m. for the report of a 911 hangup. One of the officers, Derek Mottershead, tried to speak with an apartment resident, later identified as Glynis Henson, 56, about the call.

After speaking with the officer for several minutes through the closed apartment door, Henson allegedly  opened the door and threw Pine-Sol cleaning solution into Mottershead’s face. Henson was then arrested after a brief struggle with the officer, investigators said.

Officer Mottershead was taken to Inspira Medical Center – Woodbury and later released after receiving treatment.

Henson is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. She was taken to Salem County Correctional Facility and lodged in lieu of $7,500 full cash bail.

“The officer responded to assist as a result of the 911 call and then becomes the victim of an unprovoked assault,” said Deptford Police Chief William Hanstein. “We will not tolerate any such attacks on our police officers who protect and serve the township. This will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

SEPTA Union to Vote on Whether to Authorize Strike

The union that represents more than 5,000 SEPTA bus drivers, subway and trolley operators will vote Sunday on whether to authorize a strike.

Members of Transport Workers Union Local 234 (TWU 234) will meet at 11 a.m. at the Sheet Metal Workers Union Hall at 1311 S. Christopher Columbus Boulevard in Philadelphia to discuss negotiations with SEPTA and vote on whether or not to authorize a strike.

The union’s current contract with SEPTA expires at midnight on Oct. 31. Negotiations with SEPTA began earlier in the year.

Outstanding issues for the union include the need for pension reform, maintaining affordable quality health care and addressing safety and fatigue issues for SEPTA drivers.

“We’ll get direction from our members on Sunday and proceed from there,” said TWU Local 234 President Willie Brown. “We’re not looking for a day-by-day extension and we’re not interested in working without a contract. We want an agreement that is fair to our members that addresses pension plan inequities between managers and frontline workers, while guaranteeing quality service to our passengers.”

If a strike is authorized, it would not start until Nov. 1 and would shut down SEPTA's bus, subway and trolley services in Philadelphia. SEPTA's Regional Rail service and service in areas outside of Philadelphia would not be affected.

If a deal is not reached, the strike could last through Election Day.

“Oh God, I don’t really know what to say about that one,” said Margaret Foote, a SEPTA rider. “How would people get out and vote?”

NBC10 reached out to SEPTA for comment.

“Taking a strike vote in advance of contract expiration is not out of the ordinary,” a spokesperson for SEPTA wrote. “We remain hopeful as we work to bargain an agreement in the best interest of our employees, riders and the public.”

A robbery led to a shooting at Lincoln University that injured a security officer.

Police say six to seven suspects in their early to mid 20s approached two 22-year-old men on the north side of Lincoln's campus on 1570 Baltimore Pike in Lower Oxford Township, Chester County around 3 a.m. Sunday.

At least one of the suspects took out a gun and the group began to steal jewelry from the two men. The victims tried to fight off the robbers but were physically assaulted. One of the victims then went into his vehicle and drove into several of the suspects, police said. The suspects then fired three to four shots, striking the victim's vehicle.

At the same time, a 20-year-old security officer from Philadelphia was inside a van that passed the suspects. As the gunfire continued, the officer was struck in the right arm. She was taken to Christiana Hospital where she was treated for her injury, which police say is non-life threatening.

The woman works for Imperial Security, an outside security team that was hired to help with Lincoln University's homecoming which took place this weekend.

Police have not yet revealed the conditions of the two men who were attacked and robbed. They continue to search for the suspects.

A statement from university officials said that no students were hurt or involved in the shooting.

If you have any information on the incident, please call Pennsylvania State Police Avondale at 610-268-2022 or Lincoln University Public Safety at 484-365-8139.
