An explosion erupted Saturday morning near the boardwalk in Seaside Park, New Jersey, according to police sources.

It was initially reported as a pipe bomb that went off in a garbage can at D Street and North Ocean Avenue.

There are reports of another device as well, which have been refuted according to the attorney general. The FBI, ATF, and Homeland Security were reportedly responding to the borough. The local police department is checking garbage cans along the boardwalk for any other devices, according to sources.

Homeland Security and the FBI have expanded the search from 9th Avenue to I Street and along Route 35, also known as Central Avenue, sources said. Route 35 Southbound is open, but drivers are unable to turn towards the ocean front as of 2:15 p.m.

Ocean County law enforcement asked that everyone avoid the area while the search continues. There were no reported injuries from the initial blast.

"There is a report of at least one other device, which the NJSP will make safe," the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office released in a statement.

A charity 5K race was cancelled because of the explosion and subsequent search, according to the race website.

According to the police chief, possibly a second or third IED was found in the same area. They are starting to clear a couple more blocks.

"(The pipe bomb) could have really hurt or killed people," Seaside Park Police Chief Francis Larkin said.

Pieces were blown as far as 150 feet away from the explosion, Larkin said.

An elderly Arizona man died from his injuries following a boating accident in Delaware Saturday.

The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. at the entrance to the Pot-Nets Bayside community in the Indian River Bay in Long Neck, Delaware. Officials say a 78-year-old man from Phoenix, Arizona was riding a personal watercraft. As he returned to Pot-Nets Bayside he collided with the bow of a pontoon boat that was leaving.

The impact launched the man’s personal watercraft several feet over the pontoon boat before it crashed into the water.

The 78-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The operator of the pontoon boat, a 56-year-old Wilmington man, was flown to Christina Medical Center where he is currently in stable condition. Two passengers on the pontoon boat, a 53-year-old man and 10-year-old boy, were not injured during the accident.

Officials have not revealed the victim’s identity pending the notification of family members. Fish and Wildfire Natural Police are currently investigating.

Attorney Speaks on Slain Rampage Shooting Suspect

The attorney for the slain suspect in a rampage shooting that left a woman dead and five others, including two police officers, injured, spoke to NBC10 about his former client.

“You obviously never like to see anything like this happen,” said Anthony Petrone, the attorney for Nicholas Glenn. “A tragedy for the victims and Nicholas’ family. Not a complete surprise but nothing I could have predicted.”

Police say Glenn, 25, walked up to Philadelphia Police Sergeant Sylvia Young’s marked police cruiser on 52nd and Sansom streets around 11:20 p.m. Friday, took out a Ruger Model SR9, 9mm semi-automatic pistol and opened fire, striking Young several times. He then continued on Sansom Street and went on a random shooting spree before he was eventually shot to death by responding police officers, investigators said. A 25-year-old woman died while Sergeant Young, a University of Pennsylvania police officer and three civilians were injured during the ordeal.

After Glenn was killed, police found a note in his possession with the headline, “Doomed People.” It included rambling, unclear statements that implied a hatred towards Glenn’s probation/parole officers as well as police.

"It is rambling," said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross. "It would be very difficult to glean anything from that. It's more about himself than it is about who he wanted to harm."

Police sources told NBC10 Glenn had a lengthy criminal record and was arrested more than a dozen times. During an interview with NBC10 Saturday night, Petrone described his former client’s volatile time in jail.

“He had some prison infractions for fighting,” Petrone said. “So he was in solitary for most of his time during what I remember was seven months up on State Road.”

Petrone said he noticed a change in Glenn during his stint in jail.

“I did notice with him a serious change in his attitude and overall demeanor during the period of time that he was incarcerated up in the county prison,” Petrone said. “I remember visiting him frequently and he had to be pulled out of solitary and I remember he was having a very difficult time in dealing with the solitary confinement.”

Petrone said Glenn slowly became “more and more despondent.”

“I was having more difficulty communicating with him during that period of time he was incarcerated,” Petrone said. “I kind of saw a change in his demeanor.”

Police continue to investigate Glenn’s motive in the shooting but say at this point they don’t believe he was affiliated with any group.

A day after a West Philadelphia shooting rampage left two police officers wounded, a woman dead and three other people injured, Philadelphia Police again found themselves facing gunfire late Saturday.

Officers stopped two men for investigation on downtown Philadelphia's South Street near 9th shortly before midnight Saturday, according to police, when they suspected the men of smoking marijuana. Police said when the officers approached the men, the pair fled, with officers on foot chasing them.

That's when police say at least one of the men pulled out a gun and fired at least four shots at the pursuing officers. Police did not return fire, and no injuries were reported. Officers managed to catch the two suspects and place them under arrest.

No official charges have been announced.

National Opioid & Heroin Epidemic Awareness Week Begins

As the deadly grip of the heroin and opioid addiction epidemic continues to hold in the Philadelphia region and across the nation, President Barack Obama last week declared this week, beginning Sunday, as Prescription Opioid and Heroin Epidemic Awareness Week.

President Obama officially proclaimed Sept. 18 through Sept. 24, 2016 Opioid Epidemic Awareness Week on Friday. White House officials said that as part of the week, Cabinet members and federal agencies will focus on working to address the epidemic across the U.S.

The federal government has taken many measures recently aimed at combating the heroin and opioid epidemic by increasing funding for treatment, helping to make opioid overdose antidote naloxone more readily available to citizens and police officers, and urging doctors to take care in how they prescribe opioid painkillers.

President Obama has called on Congress to approve $1.1 billion in new funding to fight the epidemic. That funding has not yet been approved.

As part of Opioid Epidemic Awareness Week, the White House will host parents who have lost children to addiction, and U.S. Attorney's Offices throughout the country will participate in more than 160 different events, according to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

NBC10 earlier this year aired and published Generation Addicted, an in-depth special report exploring the heroin and opioid epidemic in the Philadelphia region and beyond. Learn more about Generation Addicted here, and stay with NBC10.com and the NBC10 app for continuing coverage of the fight against addiction in our region.

The Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police is supporting Donald Trump for president.

FOP Lodge #5 President John McNesby confirmed with NBC10 they were supporting the Republican presidential nominee, following the lead of the National Police Union which endorsed Trump Friday.

Earlier this year, the Philly FOP slammed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton over the lineup for the Democratic National Convention because they didn’t see any widows or family members of slain police officers on the initial itinerary for planned speakers.

However, Wayne Walker, the mother of slain Philadelphia Police officer Moses Walker, ultimately spoke at the convention. After Walker’s speech, McNesby told Philly.com he praised the decision by the Clinton campaign and convention organizers to add family members of slain officers to the speaking lineup. He also claimed however that they wouldn’t have been added to the lineup if the FOP hadn’t made a statement.

Humpback Whale Likely Died from 'Human Interaction'

A young male humpback whale that washed ashore in Sea Isle, New Jersey Friday afternoon likely died from human interaction, according to officials with the Marine Mammal Stranding Center.

A necropsy completed Saturday showed that the approximately 33-foot-whale was entangled in a commercial fishing line due to the scarring on its body. Bob Scholekopf, the founding director of the MMSC, said the whale had a small amount of food in its stomach and likely wasn’t eating much because of its injury.

Officials say the 20-ton whale was extremely emaciated which they believe led to its death. While the whale was also hit by a ship, Scholekopf believes that happened after the whale had already died. He also believes the whale had been in the water for several days before it washed ashore near 20th Street in Sea Isle.

The whale was buried Saturday after the necropsy.

Eagles Players Visit Officer Injured in Rampage Shooting

A University of Pennsylvania police officer who was wounded in Friday’s rampage shooting received a visit from special guests before he was released from the hospital: four members of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Eagles’ players Jordan Matthews, Trey Burton, Zach Ertz and Jordan Hicks all visited Officer Ed Miller at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. The Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police tweeted a photo of the visit.

Miller suffered gunshot wounds to his hip and leg when he confronted a rampaging gunman, later identified by authorities as Nicholas Glenn, on 48th Street. Glenn had already shot Philadelphia Police Sgt. Sylvia Young, along with four civilians, one of whom died, according to investigators.

Glenn subsequently died in a shootout with other responding officers. Police found a note on him addressed to "doomed people" that they say contained rants and raves about his hatred for police and for his probation officer.

Miller, who served as a Philadelphia Police officer for 33 years before retiring as a sergeant and joining Penn’s police department, was released from the hospital Sunday.

Young, a 19-year veteran, remains in a local hospital in stable condition. She suffered numerous gunshot wounds to her left shoulder, arm and torso when Glenn approached her patrol car and opened fire through the window, police said.

Loved Ones Mourn Woman Killed in Rampage Shooting

Friends and family are mourning a woman who was shot and killed during a rampage attack in West Philadelphia late Friday night.

Sara Salih, 27, was sitting in a car with her boyfriend on Sansom Street when a gunman, later identified as Nicholas Glenn, approached their vehicle and opened fire. Salih was struck several times in the chest while her boyfriend was struck in the arm and chest. They were both taken to Penn-Presbyterian Hospital where Salih succumbed to her injuries. Her boyfriend remains in critical condition.

Before opening fire on Salih and her boyfriend, Glenn had already shot Philadelphia Police sergeant Sylvia Young in an ambush attack as well as a man and woman working at the Maximum Level Lounge on 5118 Sansom Street, investigators said. After shooting Salih and her boyfriend, Glenn continued his rampage attack and shot University of Pennsylvania Police officer Edward Miller. Glenn was then shot several times by responding police officers and later died from his injuries.

Salih is the only victim from Friday’s shooting who died from her injuries. Police are still unsure of Glenn’s motive though they found a raving, barely coherent note in his possession that was addressed to “doomed people.” Police described the note, written in the first person, as a “bunch of ramblings” in which Glenn expressed anger towards his parole officer as well as police.

Police believe Salih and the other civilians who were shot during the attack were random targets.

Salih’s uncle, Mohamednur Salih, told NBC10 his niece had just gotten home from a night out when the shooting took place.

“Sara was a very pretty lady and very young,” her uncle said. “Very beautiful. It’s unbelievable, the loss of life like this.”

Salih moved to America from Saudi Arabia when she was a young girl. She was studying fashion design prior to her death.

“She was eight years old when she came in,” her uncle said. “She finished high school and then she went to community college. It’s very sad to loss this way. And you try the best you possibly could. You always try.”

A University of Pennsylvania police officer wounded in Friday's shooting rampage that spanned four blocks of West Philadelphia is home from the hospital.

An official with the University of Pennsylvania's Division of Public Safety confirmed Sunday that Officer Edward Miller, who served as a Philadelphia Police officer for 33 years before retiring as a sergeant and joining Penn's police department, was released from Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Miller suffered gunshot wounds to his hip and leg when he confronted the rampaging gunman, later identified by authorities as Nicholas Glenn, on 48th Street. Glenn had already shot Philadelphia Police Sgt. Sylvia Young, along with four civilians, one of whom died.

Glenn subsequently died in a shootout with other responding officers. Police found a note on him addressed to "doomed people" that they say contained rants and raves about his hatred for police and for his probation officer

Young, a 19-year veteran, remains in a local hospital in stable condition. She suffered numerous gunshot wounds to her left shoulder, arm and torso when Glenn approached her patrol car and opened fire through the window.

Sara Salih, 25, whom Glenn also shot during his spree, died of her injuries, and a 36-year-old man she'd been in a car with who was also shot was in critical condition. Two other people Glenn also shot on his way east along Sansom Street, a 42-year-old manager and 41-year-old bartender from the Maximum Level Lounge on the 5100 block of Sansom, were in stable condition.

Investigators are continuing to try to pin down a motive for Glenn's rampage and figure out where he got the 9mm Ruger pistol with its serial number obliterated that he used in the shooting.
