NBC10 First Alert Weather: Heat Wave Scorches Region

0
0

You've probably noticed the scorching heat outside, and that's because our region is in a heat wave with dangerously high temperatures and humidity. NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Sheena Parveen has the forecast.

Forecast: Hottest Days Still to Come

0
0

We're into our fifth heatwave of the season and the hottest days are still to come.

We hit 97 degrees in Philadelphia on Friday, but that felt like 108 degrees. It was even worse in Dover, where the heat index flirted with 120 degrees.

Saturday will be a degree or two hotter, with a similar set up for afternoon storms. They will be isolated, and mainly confined to the Pennsylvania Suburbs and Lehigh Valley.

This weekend will be fairly stormy for the Poconos, so that may not be the best place to head to to duck out on the heat. Make sure you're weather aware, as the middle of a lake is the last place you want to be when a thunderstorm is approaching.

We will cool off by a degree or two for Sunday, but it will be just as sticky. Don't plan on any physical outdoor activities. Even at the coldest point in the day, just before sunrise, the temperature will be about 81 degrees in Philadelphia, which is about 4 degrees shy of the normal daytime high.

We're back into the low 90s for Monday and finally into the 80s by Wednesday. The humidity sticks around, however.

We've got a thunderstorm chance pretty much every day next week.

4 Killed in Shootings Over 9 Hour Span in Philly Friday

Gunfire claimed the lives of four people in separate shootings over a nine hour span on a steamy Friday in Philadelphia.

The first shooting claimed the life of a 52-year-old man along the 2300 block of N. 2nd Street in the city's Kensington neighborhood around 2:30 p.m., police said. Bullets pierced the man's chest, stomach, arm and shoulder.

He was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he died, police said.

Three hours later, on the other side of the city in West Philadelphia, a young man died in the street after being shot three times, police said.

The victim, believed to be between 18 and 20 years old, was shot in the face, wrist and chest along the 5600 block of Osage Avenue.

Around 10:30 p.m., two men were shot on a Frankford basketball court at Hawthorne and Meadow streets, police said. One man died from his injuries. The other is hospitalized in critical condition.

Less than a half hour later, the fourth homicide victim was shot and killed along the 200 block of East Collom Street in the city's Germantown neighborhood. This shooting happened about two blocks away from where gunmen had a shootout Thursday night, unloading as many as 40 rounds along Ashmead Street.

Bullets hit four people, the youngest being a 6-year-old boy who was struck 10 times as he rode by in his godfather's car. A $10,000 reward is being offered in that shooting.

A standard $20,000 reward is offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in all shooting death cases.

Homicide detectives are investigating all four Friday night shootings. Motives and descriptions of suspects were not immediately available.

The 'World's Fastest Woman' Remains in Jamaica

While Usain Bolt drew many eyeballs to the track on Saturday, fellow Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the woman lauded as the world’s fastest, was also expected to put on a show.

Fraser-Pryce has been unstoppable in her signature event, the 100-meter dash. But Voorhees, New Jersey’s English Gardner wanted to bring the title back to America in her first Olympics. She says her goal is to "shock the world."

They both would come up short as Jamaica's Elaine Thompson won gold with a 10-71. Fraser-Price took home the bronze while Gardner finished seventh with a 10.94.

1 Golden Eight, Not 2

Both United States eight boats – each with plenty of Philadelphia-area ties – went for gold Saturday morning in Rio with mixed results.

The dynastical U.S. Women’s Eight rowers – who train in Princeton, New Jersey – won every world championship and Olympic gold since 2006, and they lived up to the hype taking home gold again in Rio. The team's time of 6:01.49 easily beat Great Britain's 6:03.49.

This year’s team returned only two members of the gold-medal team in London: Meghan Musnicki, 33, and Elle Logan. Other Americans in the boat – Amanda Elmore, Amanda Polk, Tessa Gobbo, Kerry Simmonds, Emily Regan, Lauren Schmetterling and the coxswain, Katelin Snyder – took home their first golds.

Great Britain came in second while Romania took home bronze.

Just after the woman rowed, the U.S. Men’s Eight – with Philadelphia’s Glenn Ochal; Cinnaminson, New Jersey’s Steve Kasprzyk; and South Jersey coxswain Sam Ojserkis – tried to return to the top of the Olympic podium for the first time since 2004 but came up just short, finishing fourth in a time of 5:34.23 as Great Britain defended its Olympic gold with a 5:29.63.

Ashleigh Johnson, Women’s Water Polo Leaves Hungary Behind

Coming off of a dominant 12-4 victory of China, the U.S. women’s water polo team kept its winning streak alive against Hungary with an 11-6 win Saturday.

The win gave the dominant U.S. team, which is looking to defend its 2012 gold medal with Princeton’s Ashleigh Johnson in goal, the top seed after going undefeated in pool play.

Johnson and co. now face hosts Brazil on Monday with a spot in the semifinals on the line.

U.S. Women’s Field Hockey Loses

The unbeaten run for Team USA, with more than half the players from Pennsylvania or New Jersey, came to an end in a 2-1 loss to Great Britain on Saturday. The U.S. will still advance to the quarterfinals, as will the U.K.

Recap HERE.

Goodbye Mr. Phelps?

Is this really goodbye forever? Michael Phelps’ last Olympic swim in Rio, and perhaps last Olympic swim ever, is expected to be the 4x100 medley relay, as he put a golden finishing note to a legendary career.

But is this really goodbye for the most decorated Olympian? His mom is already talking about the 31-year-old returning for the Tokyo Games in 2020.

Police are searching for a woman accused of pouring bleach on a customer and a 1-year-old child during an argument at a Target store in Wilmington, Delaware.

Police say a 24-year-old woman was shopping at the Target Store on 1050 Brandywine Parkway in Wilmington around 5:50 p.m. back on August 4 when she was approached by another woman who was angry that she was blocking the aisle with her shopping cart. The 24-year-old victim told police she moved her shopping cart to the side to allow the suspect to pass. The suspect then struck the victim’s cart with her own shopping cart and the two women began to argue, police said.

The suspect then allegedly took out a bottle of bleach and poured it on the victim, according to investigators. Police also say the bleach struck a 1-year-old child who was inside the victim’s shopping cart.

The suspect then fled the store and was last seen entering a small white passenger vehicle with a man inside, police said.

The 24-year-old woman and the 1-year-old child were both taken to Wilmington Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police released a surveillance photo of the suspect. If you have any information on her identity, please call Corporal Michael Fiore at 302-761-6677.

Car Plows Into Temple University Frat House

A fraternity house on Temple University's main campus sustained serious damage overnight when police say a car plowed into the front of the building.

Police said a car driving down North Broad Street somehow lost a wheel then lost control and plowed into the frat house of Alpha Epsilon Pi, on Broad Street near Norris. AEPi is the university's Jewish fraternity.

The car's driver went to Temple University Hospital for treatment. There was no immediate word on the person's condition.

The car struck the house's front steps and a small porch in front of the house, causing the concrete and stone on the steps to crumble beneath it.

Police said they believe the car was involved in a hit-and-run crash elsewhere in the city, took off from that scene and then crashed at Temple. They were still investigating about 8:30 a.m. where that first crash may have taken place.

Police have not announced any charges.
