Hotels aim to make your stay memorable but sometimes it is other guests that make it memorable in all the wrong ways.

Americans at hotels are most aggravated by other guests who are “Inattentive parents," and "Hallway Hellraisers," according to a new study from Expedia.

According to the survey, 72 percent of Americans were most irritated when parents were lazy and didn't keep their children in line when staying at a hotel. 69 percent of respondents were irked when other guests made noise in the hallways. In-room revelers, hot tub canoodlers and "loudly amorous" guests also made the list of the 10 least popular fellow hotel guests.

Survey respondents also admitted some of their own worst behaviors in hotels. According to the survey results, 30 percent of Americans don't tip anyone during a hotel stay

A young man died after apparently shooting himself in the chest by accident at a Philadelphia gun range Tuesday.

Police said Wednesday the shooting, which occurred about 7:15 p.m. at The Gun Range, on Percy Street near Spring Garden just outside Center City, remains under investigation, but preliminary details indicate that a 21-year-old man at the range was handling a gun as if it had jammed at some point.

Not long after the gun appeared jammed, police said, the gun somehow accidentally went off, sending a bullet into the upper left side of the man's chest. Medics took him to nearby Hahnemann University Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 7:34 p.m.

Police have not yet released the man's identity.

Waiting for the football season can be long for fans -- and for players it can seem even longer.

Philadelphia Eagles’ tight end Brent Celek spent some of that wait working in a Philadelphia Wawa recently as part of an undercover prank video for Whistle Sports Network. Celek donned a Wawa uniform and spent a day working as a customer service associate.

The video shows the fan-favorite and all-pro tight end interacting with unsuspecting customers, and even sporting his bright red foam finger in the store. Some customers didn't even recognize the football star.

Others got a big surprised when they looked up and realized it was Celek pouring their coffee.

Video of Suspected Race Leading to Crash That Killed Toddler

New surveillance video shows a car suspected of engaging in a deadly street race in North Philadelphia, then leaving the scene when its opponent crashed into another vehicle, killing a 3-year-old girl.

The video shows the striking vehicle in the deadly crash, a light-colored Honda, speeding down 2nd Street alongside a darker vehicle. Police say the lighter car struck another Honda in which Esther Alejandra Palmer, 3, was traveling with her mother and grandmother at York Street.

Esther, in the back seat at the time, flew from the vehicle through a window on impact, police said. She landed on the sidewalk and died a short time later at a nearby hospital.

Police suspected the 17-year-old boy in the striking car -- which did stop at the scene -- of engaging in a street race. They said the other vehicle shown in the video that does appear to be racing struck a traffic light, then sped off.

Investigators hope the video will help them to track down that vehicle and find the driver.

Tipsters should contact Accident Investigation at 215-685-3180, the police tip line at 215-686-8477 or text a tip to PPD TIP (773847).

A 'Warrior from Birth,' Only to Die in Family Murder-Suicide

0
0

Willow Short lived as a "warrior from birth." Her older brother, Mark Jr., charmed people with a "contagious smile" and her older sister, Liana, devoured books as an "avid reader."

That's how the three children found dead along with their mother and father in an apparent murder-suicide at the family's Berks County home this weekend are described in heartbreaking obituaries published Wednesday memorializing them and their mother, 33-year-old Megan Short.

"She was witty, sassy loved school, art, dressing up, parties, Barbies, princesses and playing tricks on her family," the obituary says of Liana, 8, the oldest of the three siblings. Of Mark Jr., named for his father, it reads, "MJ's sweetness didn't overshadow his roughness. He approved of hugs, but kisses were out."

And for little Willow, who in her two years alive already survived a life-threatening congenital heart defect that required a heart transplant when she was days old, the remembrance reads: "Her second home for the first year was [Children's Hospital of Philadelphia], where she became an expert at putting on EKG stickers and other medical procedures. Yet, she loved life and was the happiest child ever.

"She was funny, loved Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse, dancing, taking walks, pulling all the tissues out of a box, opening the refrigerator every few minutes and opening the pantry," the obituary continues.

[[389410721, C]]

Megan Short's obituary described her as an "awesome mom" who "put her babies above all."

"She was sweet, caring, empathetic, forgiving, giving, accepting, helpful, real, strong, honest, an advocate for organ donation, intelligent and beautiful," the memorial reads.

As funerals for the children and their mother, 33-year-old Megan Short, were set Wednesday, the Berks County District Attorney's Office announced that officials plan to hold a news conference Monday afternoon to provide more details on the investigation into the family's tragic deaths.

Arrangements for Mark Short, 40, the husband and father, have not been announced.

Days after the parents and children were discovered dead of gunshot wounds in the living room of the family's stately Sinking Spring home, investigators have still not said which parent they believe pulled the trigger. There remain more questions than answers about what went horribly wrong.

NBC10 Investigator George Spencer delved into records in Berks County in search of any evidence that proved claims of marital issues, Megan Short's plans to leave due to alleged emotional abuse by her husband or "domestic issues" described by police in the wake of the family's deaths. But a records search in Reading turned up no protection-from-abuse orders and no filings for divorce on behalf of either the husband or wife.

[[389659121, C]]

Megan Short's friends and relatives of Mark Short have said that Megan expressed plans to leave her husband on social media, and alleged abuse in the home. Police said in the days after the tragic apparent murder-suicide, which also left the couple's children, 2-year-old Willow, 5-year-old Mark Jr. and 8-year-old Liana, dead, that the murder-suicide appeared to be a "domestic incident" gone terribly wrong between . But they never provided any additional details on what the couple's "domestic issues" were or whether police had a history of responding to calls at their Sinking Spring residence.

Whatever tensions in the Short home existed, they apparently boiled over sometime over the weekend. One of Megan Short's relatives contacted police in Sinking Spring and asked them to pay a visit Saturday to the couple's stately stone-and-siding home on Winding Brook Drive after she failed to show up to a planned lunch.

That's when police made the harrowing discovery in the home's living room: Both parents, all three children and the family dog all lay dead of gunshot wounds. Police have said a handgun was found next to one of the adults, but they haven't said yet which adult they believe did the shooting. They did, however, say they located what appeared to be a handwritten murder-suicide note somewhere in the home.

In another unusual twist, authorities ordered an autopsy to be performed only on Mark Short's body. They have not yet revealed any results of that autopsy.

[[389726492, L, 275, 401]]

In the last two years, the Shorts struggled with serious illness in their youngest child, Willow, who was born with a congenital heart defect. She underwent a heart transplant when she was just days old and needed intensive follow-up treatment, which has been chronicled in both the Reading Eagle and the New York Times. Megan Short also wrote recently of her own struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder caused by grappling with her daughter's illness on the Philly at Heart blog.

Mark Short's relatives told NBC10 earlier this week that Megan Short had been planning to leave him and file for divorce. They described Mark Short as a family man who was desperately trying to keep his family together -- although Megan Short's claims of abuse, shared with the Reading Eagle by her friends, told a different story.

"Mark was really trying to make it work, and he took them to Disney World in February to try and bond the family together," Eleanor Short, Mark Short's aunt, said. "Evidently, it didn't work, because she still wanted to get out of the marriage."

NBC10 has reached out to Megan Short's relatives and friends, but has not received responses.

Funerals for the children and mother will be held for friends and relatives at Givnish Funeral Home on Academy Road in Northeast Philadelphia Thursday and Friday.

In lieu of flowers, the obituaries ask for donations to Gift of Life Family House or the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Cardiac Center.

Authorities in Berks County said until Monday's news conference, no more information about the tragic murder-suicide will be made public.

"There will be no further updates until that time, so that we may focus all of our efforts on bringing closure to this investigation," the office wrote in a statement.

Parasite Scare Closes Montco Public Pool

A pool in Montgomery County shut down after officials learned someone who contracted a parasite had been swimming there will likely be reopened tomorrow, officials said.

Crestmont Pool in Willow Grove, Abington Township, was shut down by the Montgomery County Department of Health Tuesday afternoon after officials say they learned someone diagnosed with cryptosporidium parasite -- commonly called "crypto" -- swam there. They shut the pool down out of an abundance of caution, Abington Parks and Recreation Director Douglas Wendell told NBC10, and no cryptosporidium has been found in the pool's water.

"Our pool is maintained very well. We have weekly water testing, which has not even shown any fecal coliform, let alone cryptosporidium," Wendell said. "We've had no indication there's any cryptosporidium in our water at all, so we suspect this is an incident where the person came in with it."

Wendell said that as soon as the health department notified staff at the pool of the infection about 3 p.m. Tuesday, they began treating the water with extra chlorine -- 10 parts per million, as opposed to the usual two parts per million.

That range will be maintained for 25.5 hours, then the Health Department is expected to give the OK for the pool to reopen. He said he expects the pool will be ready to reopen by 11 a.m., its usual opening time, on Thursday.

Cryptosporidium, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is a parasite that causes diarrhea, stomach cramps and pain, nausea, vomiting, fever and weight loss. Diarrhea is the most common symptom, the CDC says, and most people who contract the infection get better within a week or two.

Crypto is most often found in water contaminated with human or animal feces.

Teen Charged in Montco Murders of His Mother, Her Boyfriend

A teenager was charged Wednesday in the shooting deaths of his mother and her boyfriend at an Ambler home July 31, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office said.

Joshua Trunk, 19, will face two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Janice Trunk, 54, and Kevin Milton Smith, 44, at the Forest Garden Apartments complex on Forest Avenue.

Police found the couple dead in bed with numerous gunshot wounds to the head and torso, the DA's office said in a statement.

"When the officers entered the apartment, there were no signs of forced entry, no evidence of the ransacking common to burglaries and no indication of a struggle," DA Kevin Steele said. "The evidence pointed to the defendant and a family violence situation."

Joshua Trunk has been in custody since July 31. He faces drug possession charges in a separate case.

He recently received in-patient treatment for drugs at Eagleville Hospital, witnesses interviewed by Ambler police said.

One witness also told police that the suspect's mother "thought [Joshua] Trunk was going to 'do something.'"

Joshua Trunk is being held without bail and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 15.
