Bernie Sanders Campaign Denied DNC Rally Permit

Bernie Sanders supporters endured insult after injury this week.

First, they listened to their candidate declare defeat to Hillary Clinton on Tuesday. And now, they won't get to listen to their candidate speak at an outdoor rally in South Philadelphia on the eve of the Democratic National Convention.

The Sanders campaign got rejected by the City of Philadelphia in a request to hold a July 24 rally.

The campaign sought to hold a rally for up to 40,000 people on a baseball field at FDR Park, according to the rejection letter from a deputy city managing director.

In bold all caps, the city told John Robinson of Bernie 2016, Inc. that it was "DENIED" in its application to hold a rally at Ashburn Field because the field is not permitted for "non-recreational purposes."

"The City Property requested is a non-public forum that has not been opened for expressive activity to the general public," Deputy Managing Director for Operations Jazelle Jones wrote in the rejection letter.

Here is the letter in full:

RE:  “Bernie 2016 Future to Believe in Rally” Demonstration Application – 07/24/16

Dear Mr. Robinson,

Please be advised that your Demonstration Application for the above-referenced event has been DENIED.  The reason(s) for this denial is (are) as follows:

-          The City Property requested is a non-public forum that has not been opened for expressive activity to the general public. (See Permit Policy for Demonstrations Section 7, Subsection B, Paragraph 23).

Specifically, the property sought to be used for the Demonstration (Ashburn Field) is subject to a multi-party agreement that doesn’t permit usage for non-recreational purposes.

Due to the requested date, time, scope and location of the proposed activity, we do not have recommended alternatives to propose.  However, we welcome the submission of a revised application by your organization with a different staging area, time and/or route.

If you should have any questions or concerns, or feel that you are receiving this letter in error, please contact the Office of Special Events at 215-686-3488.

George Washington to Speak at RNC, Event App Says

Editor's Note: A list of actual speakers was added to the RNC 2016: Official App a few hours after this story was posted Saturday afternoon.

George Washington is scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland when the event kicks off in less than 48 hours.

In fact, he's the only speaker scheduled so far — if you believe the convention's official mobile app.

The RNC 2016: Official App, available for smartphones and tablets, features a map of the area where the convention will be in Cleveland, details of the venue, videos and a schedule of events for the gathering, which begins Monday and runs through July 21. The app, available for download on iTunes and Google Play, also includes a list of speakers.

But, other than Washington, the speakers list page remained "under construction" as of Saturday afternoon. Its schedule of events section also appeared to not be finalized, displaying "Official Schedule Coming Soon..." on the page.

A spokesman for the RNC said Saturday that the app will be fully updated and operational by Sunday night.

"We wanted to have it ready to go before the convention begins Monday morning and we're right on schedule," spokesman David O'Neill said. "We anticipate a glitch-free app tomorrow."

As for the nation's first president speaking, O'Neill said Washington isn't going to show up this time around.

"I've been asked that a couple times already," he said. "It's simply a placeholder."

The RNC is the first of the national conventions for the country's two major political parties. The Democratic National Convention will be held the following week in Philadelphia. That runs July 25-28.

Naked Woman Collapses, Dies of Stab Wound on Phila. Street

A naked woman covered in blood collapsed and died on a street corner in Philadelphia overnight, and police are searching for the person who they say attacked her.

Officers responded to the corner of Jasper and Letterly streets in Kensington about 11:20 p.m. for reports of a woman screaming, Capt. Robert Ritchie told NBC10. When they arrived, they found the woman lying naked on the sidewalk, dead of a stab wound to the right side of her neck, Ritchie said.

"She was bloody from head to toe," Ritchie said.

Medics pronounced the victim, whose name was not released but who police said was 35 years old, dead on the sidewalk.

Ritchie said that an initial investigation into the incident revealed that the woman was in a rear alley along Cumberland Street near Jasper when someone attacked her, driving a jagged object into her neck. The victim stumbled about a block to Letterly Street, where she collapsed.

The captain said investigators found about 10 surveillance cameras along the route they believe the victim took from the location where she was stabbed to where she fell. They were working on obtaining video from those cameras Sunday morning.

"We're going to hope that helps us in catching the person responsible for committing this act," Ritchie said.

Police have not said what they believe motivated the stabbing or whether they believe the victim was also sexually assaulted. No arrests have been made.

More than 350 people remained without power Sunday morning after strong storms swept through South Jersey on Saturday, leaving flooding and power outages in their wake.

Atlantic City Electric's website said that 375 customers remained without power about 7:15 a.m. Sunday, the bulk of whom are in Camden County.

The storms that blew through the area initially left about 2,000 people in the dark, an AC Electric spokesperson said, but the company restored power to most of them by morning. Other counties still seeing the most outages Sunday morning were Burlington, Cumberland and Gloucester, although AC Electric reported fewer than 100 customers with power in each of those counties.

There was no time estimate for when power may be restored to those still in the dark.

Nearly 2,000 people were left in the dark Saturday following severe storms in South Jersey.

The storms brought down wires and damaged trees due to high winds, heavy rain and lightning. A spokesperson for Atlantic City Electric said that nearly 2,000 customers were without power during the peak of the storm. As of 10:30 p.m., over 1800 AC Electric customers were without power.

The storms also caused flooding in parts of South Jersey, including Winslow Township and Atco.  Lightning also struck two women at Point Pleasant Beach, Ocean County. Both women suffered minor injuries.

A teen girl is in the hospital after she was shot while attending a Sweet 16 block party in the Oxford Circle section of Philadelphia.

The 15-year-old girl was attending a party along the 5900 block of Horrocks Street at 9:28 p.m. Saturday when a gunman opened fire, striking her in the buttocks. Witnesses told NBC10 they heard what they thought were fire crackers. They then saw the teen girl lying on the sidewalk.

“I said, ‘Do you know your name?’ and she said her nickname or whatever,” said Kai Braxton, a witness. “The paramedic said to put pressure on it. The lady was like, ‘Take my sweater off! Take my sweater off!’ So I took her sweater off.”

The teen was taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital where she is in stable condition. No arrests have been made.
