The president of the Point Pleasant Beach Little League faces charges that he stole $10,000 from the league via ATM withdrawals from its bank account.

Dectectives from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office arrested Vincent Cicalese, 57, at his home Friday morning. He faces charges of computer theft in the 2nd degree and theft in the 3rd degree. A judge set bail at $25,000.

Prosecutors opened a probe into the alleged theft after a report from the league's board.

Our New Home Page: What You Need to Know

$

0

Giving you the information you need as fast as possible — that’s the guiding principle for the new NBC10 home page, which has been revamped to highlight live video and the news you need to know right now.

The new design on desktop and mobile web highlights all the live video available on the site — everything from newscasts to campaign speeches to the latest episodes of "The Voice" and "Blindspot." A revamped "This Just In" module provides information you need to know from our reporters and social media. And our interactive radar is now available right on the home page.

So what’s new?

  • A sleeker header that follows you across the site. It provides easy access to live video as well as convenient ways to connect with us.

The header immediately highlights key sections like News and Weather, and when you hover over the “…” you can find all of the depth of coverage that our site provides.

The “Watch Live TV” nav item serves as a hub for all of our live video, including a 24-hour-a-day stream of what’s on our on-air channel via NBC.com.

The “Connect” nav item makes it easy to reach us. Use this nav item to submit breaking news tips, photos or videos, connect with us on social media or sign up for one of our newsletters.

  • A live video bar that highlights important live video that is happening right now, including our on-air broadcasts, news conferences and special events. These live video bars will provide a link to the coverage as well as a few bullet points with more information.
  • Interactive radar has been added directly to the homepage, allowing you to zoom in and out to track storms in your neighborhood and across the country. In times of severe weather, look in this area for the latest weather alerts and school closings.
  • A “This Just In” section that is constantly updated with the latest news and views, especially on social media. News updates happen fast, so this will be an area of focus during breaking news situations and severe weather events.

  • A “Quicknav” on mobile web that allows you to easily navigate between sections on your phone’s browser. Swipe left to see the main navigation items on the site. The “Quicknav” will follow you throughout the site for your convenience.

We hope you like the enhancements we’ve made to the site and mobile web experience! Have comments or suggestions for future improvements? Let us know by clicking here.

Hidden Philly: Taxidermy From the 1800s

$

Nestled among the cramped row houses, vacant lots and spray-painted walls of North Philadelphia lies an unlikely treasure from the Victorian era. The Wagner Free Institute of Science is a window back to the 1840s, with its aisles of glass cases containing hundreds of biological specimens from vials of squidgy sea worms in formaldehyde to toothy skulls and taxidermy of every description. The slightly macabre collection might even resemble the more famous Mutter Museum, if it were focused on natural history instead of medical history.

Philadelphia merchant William Wagner, the "gentleman naturalist," was known for his extensive natural history collection of fossils, minerals, and biological specimens and the free informal lectures he gave in his home during the mid-1800s. The Victorian building was built in 1865 to display Wagner's ever growing collection and also included a grand lecture hall on the ground floor for Wagner to continue offering free scientific education to the public.

Famed biologist Joseph Leidy took over the Institute after Wagner's death in 1885, and expanded and reorganized the collection according to Darwin's theory of evolution. The museum has not changed since, and the labels have not been updated for over a century. Outdated depictions of lumbering dinosaurs and classification errors abound, providing a rare glimpse of natural science during the Victorian Era.

The Wagner still hosts free guest lectures, as well as class trips and other educational programs where you can learn just as much about modern science as you can about the past.

The Wagner Free institute is open Tuesday-Friday 9am- 4pm

Pa. Woman Loses Wedding Rings Passed Down from Deceased Mom

Michelle Servey- Purcell thought she would have a regular night out last weekend but it quickly went awry when she lost her symbolic wedding rings passed down by her mother.

Michelle and Steve Purcell Jr. were married this past Memorial Day Weekend.

“It was 85 degrees, sunny, and a little humid. It was perfect. I could not pick one bad thing out about the wedding. It was barbecue style, 75 people, and I could have not imagined a better day,” Michelle said.

Her husband is an army veteran and just finished school to become a Philadelphia firefighter. The only things missing from this love story are Michelle's two wedding rings.

Michelle remembers losing them at the bathroom sink around 10:30 p.m. inside Via Marconi's Sports Bar and Pizza Pub in Hatfield, Pennsylvania on June 25.

Her rings were passed down from her mother who passed away when she was seven years old.

“I’ll do anything to get them back. Those rings are the only thing I have left of my mom’s. They are priceless and sentimental to my family. I can’t find them and I feel hopeless,” Michelle said.

Breaking the news to her dad that she had lost the rings was also extremely difficult.

“He was heartbroken," she said. "My husband told me I was being hard on myself but I am just devastated. I can’t even look at wedding photos because I have the rings on in the photos."

Purcell has since made fliers, Facebook posts, and filed a report with the Hatfield Police Department.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of Michelle's rings, email NBC10 at PhillyWebTeam@nbcuni.com.

Hillary Clinton’s campaign is holding a contest to select a supporter who will give a speech on stage at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia to formally nominate her as the party’s presidential nominee, NBC News reports.

Supporters have to submit a video explaining what Clinton’s nomination means to them and why they think she should be the next president.

Judges are looking for “comfort on camera, charisma” and “a compelling personal narrative,” according to the contest rules. The winner will be flown to Philadelphia to speak at the event and will receive one night in a hotel for an estimated value of $2,500.

The campaign has been holding a number of high-profile contests to inspire small-dollar fundraising, including dinners with Clinton and tickets to see the Broadway hit "Hamilton" with the former secretary of state.

Caught on Cam: Possible Funnel Cloud in Millville

A man recorded video of a possible funnel cloud in Millville, New Jersey Friday afternoon as severe storms moved through the region. Joe Lacivita said he spotted it near Route 49 and Sugarman Avenue around 4:30 p.m.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether a funnel cloud actually touched down in the area. NBC10 First Alert Weather chief meteorologist Glenn Schwartz says it’s possible however given the conditions Friday.

“In that area we did detect some rotation in the clouds on the Doppler Radar so it is possible,” Glenn said. “It was over a field so we don’t have any damage to investigate.”

The possible funnel cloud was spotted amid a stormy day in South Jersey in which several areas, including Vineland, dealt with flash flooding.
