What a Montco Library Wants on GoFundMe

$

When you’re in the midst of a $755,000 renovation like Pottstown Regional Public Library is, every little bit counts.

That’s why the library’s executive director, Susan Davis, decided to try out a $5,000 campaign on the popular crowdfunding website GoFundMe.

“Someone we hired as a marketing consultant recommended it,” Davis said. “This seems to be taking off.”

So far, 10 donors have pledged $1,130. The money will go to some new features, including movable shelving that can be arranged to accommodate events the library will host, Davis said.

The library, which is organized as a non-profit, is getting its first major renovation since it was converted from a post office in the 1960s. The demolition phase is underway, and the entire project is expected to be complete by September or October.

A $300,000 state grant is helping to pay for the project, Davis said.

Her assistant, Tracey Iezzi, said people are already marveling at what’s been uncovered during this first phase -- mosaic tile floor, marble trim, a glass ceiling pane.

“In the 60s, they painted over it,” Iezzi said of the marble trim. “There’s a purple color and a yellow color and we’re like, ‘Why would you paint over marble?’”

Broadway Star Leslie Odom Jr. looks back on his early years growing up in Philly as what eventually got him to Broadway.

“I didn’t know that going to Freedom was going to prepare me for Broadway," Odom said. "It was a great place to get some discipline and focus and that was the beginning.”

Odom grew up in Philadelphia before embarking on his career as an actor on Broadway.

“Philly was a great place to grow up. I am thankful to my parents who really let me go. From the age of 10 I was off and running. I went to the school at Masterman and I was at Freedom Theater and Philadanco,” Odom said.

Odom was introduced to theater when he got involved in an African American Oracle Competition that he eventually won. He then earned a scholarship to the Freedom Theater.

His training at Freedom Theater eventually led to various shows such as Rent before he took on the role of Aaron Burr in Hamilton. The show was nominated for 22 Tony awards and won 11, including Odom’s award for Best Actor in a Musical for the year.

Odom credits his inspiration for acting to the creativity and talent in Philadelphia.

“I was endlessly inspired by the talent in Philadelphia because that was the talent I could touch. There was genius all around me. The way I look and perceive at art comes from being raised as a young black man in Philadelphia. My earliest experience of taking in art at Freedom Theater and Philadanco is how I perceive art. It’s a good lens,” Odom said.

Odom will be a performer and emcee for the July 4th Party in the Parkway event at Wawa’s Welcome America! Festival.

“There is nothing I like more than hosting a good party," he said. "I like making sure people feel taken care of from the entrance to the exit. They have a good time, maybe learn a little something. To connect with people is my favorite thing. It’s why I do this. I’m going to bring a little bit of the party from the Richard Rodgers Theater which is about all connecting and joy to the 4th of July with Wawa.“

Heavy Rain Moves Through Region

Tuesday wasn't exactly the best day. It was overcast outside for much of the area, and the humidity was pretty nasty. Tuesday night, the Lehigh Valley, Berks County and the Pennsylvania suburbs all saw storms with heavy rain.

WHAT TO EXPECT OUT OF THE STORMS

The biggest threat from these storms was damaging wind, gusting to 50 miles per hour or more. There was also frequent lightning strikes. Because those storms came during evening rush hours, heavy rain and some roadway flooding was a concern. They didn't really move very fast. You almost never see thunderstorms move at 25 miles per hour (usually they’re moving at 40 miles per hour or more), so the concern was about roadway flooding as the rain sat over places longer than it normally does.

WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF US?

Some storms moved into Philly, Delaware and South Jersey late Tuesday night but they had weakened by the time they moved in. The rain moved out around midnight.

Wednesday will be mostly sunny with a high of 86 while Thursday will also be sunny with a high of 88. The next chance of rain we'll see is for Friday afternoon.

Bystanders Save Cabdriver Stabbed 7 Times by Passenger

Bystanders rushed to help a cabdriver stabbed seven times by a passenger in South Jersey overnight, saving the man's life.

Witnesses told NBC10's Katy Zachry that it was just after midnight Wednesday when they saw a taxi careen into the parking lot of their public housing complex, at State and Front streets, and heard screams coming from inside the cab. They went to help, and said they saw a man get out of the back of the cab and run away and found the driver, identified by relatives as Juan Fortuna, in the front seat, bleeding from stab wounds to his shoulder and chest.

A woman put Fortuna in her own SUV and drove him to nearby Cooper University Hospital. Authorities said he was in surgery at Cooper about 4 a.m., and relatives said doctors later upgraded his condition to stable.

On Wednesday morning, Fortuna's brother, Jose Fortuna, who also drives a cab for the same company, 5 Star Cab, told NBC10 that he's grateful for the woman and others who helped save him. Jose Fortuna said his brother gave the robber the money, but the robber attacked him anyway.

"He was giving him the money, but he didn't pay attention to the money. He just all of a sudden started stabbing my brother," Jose Fortuna said. "And from that point forward, my brother crashed into another car, and the neighbors started coming out and trying to help."

Police said the ordeal unfolded after the passenger flagged down Juan Fortuna's taxi at a 7-Eleven in East Camden. The passenger asked to be taken to the public housing complex at Front and State streets, and there, authorities said, the passenger robbed and stabbed Fortuna.

Jose Fortuna said that 5 Star Cab drivers try to avoid picking up random fares overnight in order to stay safe and avoid dangerous incidents like the one his brother faced. Instead, they stick to fares who call dispatch and request a taxi as much as they can.

Police continued to search for the driver's attacker Wednesday morning.

An unsuspecting Whole Foods shopper in Montgomery County fell victim to a wallet theft by people who police say later racked up more than $4,000 on her credit card.

Abington Police said the victim was shopping at the Whole Foods Market on the Fairway in Jenkintown on June 20 when someone stole her wallet out of her purse.

Police released surveillance video from the store showing a woman they identified as a suspect in the theft, as well as a man and a woman who they believe are accomplices. In the video, the man is seen placing something into one of the female suspect's bags. Police say they believe what he put in her bag was the wallet he just stole from the victim.

Police said the victim's credit card was used for more than $4,000 in purchases at the Willow Grove Mall Bloomingdale's store a short time after her wallet went missing. They are asking the public's help to identify the suspects in hopes of solving the case. Watch the video from Abington Police here.
