Kenny Chesney Calls Wounded Folcroft Officer to Apologize

Hours after mistakenly telling his Philly concert crowd an officer shot seven times Friday had died, country music star Kenny Chesney called the wounded officer at the hospital and did more than apologize.

Chesney told Folcroft Police Officer Chris Dorman he'd like grab a few beers with and watch an Eagles game together.

Saturday night's faux pas came after a day of pleading for the musician to give a shoutout to Dorman, who would have been at the concert had he not been shot Friday during an alleged drug bust in Folcroft.

During his concert, Chesney told fans, "Before we get going with the rest of the show, last night, a Philadelphia police officer was shot seven times. In the hospital on his bed... he passed away, but before he passed away he made a video that he wanted to come tonight so bad, and he said, 'Kenny, please don't forget me.'"

Dorman was struck in the face, neck and arm. The 25-year-old officer is recovering at Penn Presbyterian Hospital and has been in good spirits, according to Folcroft Fire chief Tom Weber, who has known the young officer for a decade.

Dorman is expected to make a full recovery and will be released from the hospital Monday.

Philadelphia's electrians' union, IBEW Local 98, apparently paid for several other Folcroft officers to attend Chesney's concert at Lincoln Financial Field.

Folcroft Officer Shot 7 Times Goes Home Monday

Folcroft police officer Chris Dorman, who was shot seven times Friday while on duty, is set to head home from the hospital Monday afternoon.

Police and fire crews will escort the 25-year-old patrolman home, with the motorcade passing under water jets as it rolls by the firehouse. Dorman joined Folcroft's force as a part-time officer last summer and has volunteered with the borough's fire department for 16 years.

After he leaves Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, he will take the 25-minute escorted ride to Folcroft Fire Company in the 1600 block of Delmar Drive. Friends and family are expected to greet Dorman there around 3 p.m.

Dorman was shot in the face, neck and arm while investigating alleged drug activity Friday morning. Police said the gunman was a drug dealer whose parole was supposed to end the following day. Donte Brooks Island surrendered after SWAT officers stormed an apartment building. He was arraigned Friday on attempted murder and related charges.

It's tough to imagine a time compressed with more drama for Dorman than the last three days.

After Dorman's condition improved from critical to stable condition, Saturday night during his Philadelphia concert, country music star Kenny Chesney mistakenly told fans Dorman had passed away in the hospital.

Chesney called the officer at the hospital on Sunday, apologized and said he'd love to catch an Eagles game and a few beers with Dorman soon.

Dorman is expected to make a full recovery.

Bon Jovi Surprises Fan Battling Cancer

A trip to dinner turned out to be the surprise of a lifetime for a New Jersey woman battling stage four lung cancer.

Carol Cesario has spent the last five months in and out of the hospital, her daughter, Rosie Skripkunis, said. Cesario, a lifelong Jon Bon Jovi fan, has always hoped she might one day get up close and personal with the singer.

“One of her biggest dreams was to meet him, ever since I was little,” Skripkunis said.

In an effort to cheer her mom up, Skripkunis made a makeshift sign on a piece of newspaper in May pleading for the singer to come visit her mom. With the help of friends, and lots of shares on Facebook, within an hour, Skripkunis was working with Bon Jovi’s team to make the dream a reality.

With June 25th picked as the date and Bon Jovi’s restaurant JBJ Soul Kitchen in Toms River as the destination, Skripkunis says she had no problem keeping the secret from her mom.

“I lied to her,” Skripkunis said, laughing. “I told her I wrote to his restaurant, that they said they couldn’t pass fan mail on, but that they had invited us for a free meal. It was a free meal, but it was a free meal with Bon Jovi there.”

At the restaurant, Cesario sat with her family talking as Bon Jovi snuck in the door behind her, then stood next to her without saying anything.

"Oh my God!" Cesario yelled out when she noticed exactly who was standing next to her. Bon Jovi gave an emotional Cesario a kiss on the cheek.

Cesario, Skripkunis, and their family spent the night with Bon Jovi, talking for hours and listening to some of the singer’s new music. Bon Jovi gave Cesario an autographed book and a guitar.

Skripkunis said since the dinner, her mom can’t stop thinking about it.

“She slept with the book he gave her,” Skripkunis said.

History of Domestic Violence Preceded Crossbow Killing

A man accused of killing his girlfriend Sunday night by shooting her through the chest with a crossbow had a history of domestic violence, police said.

Police said Sunday night that officers have responded to the home, on the 3100 block of Willits Road in Northeast Philadelphia, at least a few times for domestic violence calls. They said on Sunday night, neighbors called 9-1-1 after 42-year-old Pamela Nightlinger, shot through the chest with a crossbow, stumbled to their home and collapsed in their doorway, bleeding profusely.

The bolt from the crossbow penetrated Nightlinger's body, then went through the couch and into the wall, said Philadelphia Police Capt. Anthony Ginaldi.

Officers arrived to find Nightlinger in a pool of blood. She was rushed to Aria Torresdale hospital where she died a short time later.

Residents of the area who knew the couple said that the man had been having issues lately.

"Neighbors say things for him appeared to go downhill recently, in the last month or so," Ginaldi said.

The crossbow was recovered at the scene. Ginaldi said it appeared children live at the house based on the way some of the rooms are decorated, and investigators believe the children were at a different location in another part of the state.

Charges were expected to be filed against the man, who was also not yet identified publicly, on Monday.

Big Week for Water Contamination Concerns in Montco, Bucks

0

Two important events take place this week as concerns grow over the health effects of water contamination on and near local military bases.

The first is Monday at 7 p.m. at Horsham's Community Center located at 1025 Horsham Road.

Township Council and Horsham Water and Sewer Authority hold a joint meeting about water quality. The topic's being addressed at the regular Council Meeting, which is open to the public.

In a notice posted late last week about the meeting, the public was invited to hear about the remediation options the township is considering to deal with toxic levels of PFCs or perfluorochemicals found in Horsham's water supply.

Water was contaminated by chemicals used on the Naval Air Base in Willow Grove. People who worked on the base and people who live nearby want to know if cancers and other illnesses are connected to the toxic water.

Township leaders say their goal is to "achieve a standard of water quality that far exceeds any other in the nation by the end of 2016."

Monday's meeting takes place one day before environmental lawyers from Weitz and Luxenberg come down from New York to meet with members of the community and military interested in learning more about the firm's investigation of PFOA and PFOS contamination. Those chemicals were used in firefighting foam on the base and have likely been in groundwater for decades.

That meeting is set for Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Upper Moreland High School at 3000 Terwood Road in Willow Grove.

Man Shoots, Kills Girlfriend's Ex After Break-In: Police

A man died late Sunday night when police say he broke into his ex-girlfriend's Philadelphia home and was met by her new boyfriend, who shot him in the head.

Police said officers responded to the home on Edgewood Street near Walnut about 11:45 p.m. When they arrived, they found a 24-year-old man shot twice in the head and twice in the arm.

Medics pronounced the man dead at the scene just before midnight.

Police said a preliminary investigation showed that the man apparently broke into the home, where his ex-girlfriend lived, through a window and that her new boyfriend caught him and shot him. Two children were home at the time, police said, but no other injuries were reported in the incident.

Police said the suspected shooter was taken into police custody at the scene, but it was unclear whether charges would be filed against him.

Petition for 2nd EU Vote Hits 3M Signatures: An online petition calling for a second referendum on Britain's exit from the European Union surpassed 3 million signatures Sunday, highlighting the tumult sweeping the country in the wake of the shock decision. The petition calls on the government to implement a rule stating that if the "Remain" or "Leave" camps won less than 60 percent of the vote with less than a 75 percent turnout, "there should be another referendum.” The referendum has been deeply divisive for the United Kingdom. The "Leave" campaign had racked up 17.4 million votes — compared to 16.1 million backing the status quo — giving "Leave" 51.9 percent of the ballot. The online petition site hosted by the House of Commons website crashed Friday under the weight of the activity as officials said they'd seen unprecedented interest in the measure.

TODAY'S TALKER

Dump Trump Movement Planning for Convention Floor Fight: The grassroots movement aimed at ousting Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention is planning for a convention floor fight, hiring staff, establishing a command center in Cleveland and rolling out ads in key states over the next week. Organizers of the effort held their second weekly conference call Sunday night. Former Bogota, New Jersey, Mayor Steve Lonegan, a Ted Cruz supporter and spokesman for a super PAC backing the effort, said he plans to hire East, West and Central regional field directors to begin building a "comprehensive list of every single delegate" to get to know their interests and issues. The group is also planning to hire a full-time executive director, because the current staff is working on a volunteer basis, Lonegan said. An advance team is heading to Cleveland this week to build a command center outside the convention center. Lonegan said the "most critical" step is airing ads for delegates who are "under duress" from state party officials or others for speaking out against Trump or in support of a change to the convention rules.

Violent Night Leaves 3 Dead, 4 Wounded in Philadelphia

0
0

Six separate shootings and a domestic killing involving a crossbow left three people dead and four others wounded across Philadelphia in just a few hours overnight.

In the earliest killing, police say a woman died after her boyfriend shot her through the chest with a crossbow about 9:20 p.m. inside their home on the 3100 block of Willits Road in Northeast Philadelphia. Police have said they responded to the home several times in the past for domestic issues.

In another domestic incident unrelated to that killing, police say a 24-year-old man died in West Philadelphia shortly before midnight after he broke into his ex-girlfriend's home on Edgewood Street near Walnut and came face to face with her new boyfriend, who shot him in the head and arm. Police took the boyfriend into custody and recovered the gun they believe he used, but it was unclear early Monday whether charges would be filed.

Also in West Philadelphia less than a half-hour later, a 17-year-old boy suffered a wound to his arm after someone shot him on Vine Street near 54th. The teen underwent treatment at Presbyterian Medical Center, where police say he was in stable condition. No arrests were made in that shooting.

About the same time in North Philadelphia, a 19-year-old woman sustained a gunshot wound to her thigh when gunfire erupted on Sterner Street near 26th, police said. The woman was taken to Temple University Hospital, where she was in stable condition. Police recovered eight spent shell casings at the scene, but reported no arrests or suspects.

In Mill Creek, gunfire wounded a 23-year-old man in his arm and stomach on Creighton Street near Wyalusing Avenue, leaving him in critical condition. That man remained at Presbyterian Medical Center Monday morning, and police did not say why they suspect he was shot or report any arrests.

Just after 1:30 a.m., another shooting in North Philadelphia, this time on Cleveland Street near Dauphin, left a 36-year-old man dead. Responding officers found the victim lying in the street suffering gunshot wounds to his chest, police said. They took the man to Temple University Hospital, where he died about 15 minutes later. Police said they found drugs and paraphernalia at the scene of the shooting, leading them to suspect drugs at the motive. At least 14 spent shell casings littered the block in the shooting's aftermath as homicide detectives investigated.

Elsewhere in North Philadelphia, a 31-year-old man suffered an injury to his leg when police say someone shot him at 6th and Clearfield streets, in the Fairhill neighborhood. That man was stable at Temple University Hospital, and police reported no arrests.

Police Commissioner Richard Ross said Monday morning that he doesn't attribute the weekend bloodshed to warmer temperatures, telling reporters there isn't really evidence that shows violence increases with warm weather.

"There are more people out, but sometimes we get violent weekends in January, so the bottom line is if it's violent, it's violent, it's something we don't want whether it's 90 degrees or 30 degrees," Ross said.

He said the police are out across the city working to keep the streets safe.

"To be honest with you, as sad as it may sound, I mean, six people shot is not a lot of people shot in Philadelphia, and that's a sad testament," he said. "Clearly we're never happy with that, but we're out there, and you can't ever, ever overlook the impact that we're having on what you can't measure."

Anyone with information in any shooting or homicide may contact Philadelphia Police at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or text a tip to PPD TIP (773 847). A $20,000 reward for a tip leading to an arrest and conviction is offered in every homicide case.

Radio Issues During Officer's Shooting Spark Investigation

0
0

An investigation into problems with police radio is underway in Delaware County after emergency communications ran into issues in the crucial moments after Folcroft Police Officer Chris Dorman was shot by a drug suspect on Friday.

Authorities in Delaware County confirmed that a police dispatcher's computer began to reboot without warning during Dorman's shooting as dispatchers were working to communicate with the wounded officer and others as they responded. The dispatcher quickly moved to a different computer and never lost communication with the officers on the street, officials said.

But computer issues aren't the only problem with emergency communications: Officials in Delaware County told NBC10's Cydney Long that sometimes, when the weather changes from warm to cool, radio frequencies go out for short periods of time.

"There are periods of time when the radio frequencies go out and they don't hit the tower, they don't hit the antennae," Darby Borough Police Chief Robert Smythe, whose borough neighbors Folcroft, said. He said the problem seems to surface when hot days transition into cool nights and the temperature changes.

"An officer gets out of the car ... he doesn't have radio contact, but he doesn't know that because there's nothing that triggered it. It's an act of nature," Smythe said.

Officials said the county installed special antennae called booster repeater antennae in the past to help mitigate the problem, but that it still surfaces at times.

Police radio recordings from Dorman's shooting captured the officer's chilling call: "I'm shot! I'm shot! I'm shot!"

In the wake of the shooting, the Delaware County Council called for an investigation into communications during and after it to identify and try to resolve any communication problems.

"The bad part is it's happening," Smythe said. "The good part is that the county is responding."
