Modest Tsunami Strikes Jersey Shore, Delaware

A weather-related tsunami struck the coast of the Jersey Shore and Delaware beaches during severe storms Tuesday afternoon.

"The band of thunderstorms that crossed the Washington, D.C., area earlier today generated a modest meteotsunami off the coast of Delaware and New Jersey," said U.S. NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The peak of the event occurred right around 3:15 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and caused water levels to drop to around 0.5 meters, said the Honolulu, Hawaii-based Tsunami Warning Center.

So what’s a meteotsunami?

"A meteotsunami is generated when a high-speed straight-line windstorm (usually called a de recho) passes over shallow water," wrote the Tsunami Warning Center on Facebook. "The speed of a tsunami in deep water is hundreds of km per hour, but in shallow water it's much slower. If the water depth is 20 meters (as it is off the mouth of Delaware Bay), the tsunami speed is only 50 km/h. A low-pressure atmospheric system traveling at 50 km/h (or sustained winds of 50 km/h) can therefore kick up a "tsunami" (the process is called Proudman Resonance). So you can get a tsunami-like phenomenon generated not by an earthquake but by weather. We call these things meteotsunamis."

A similar meteotsunami along the Jersey Coast in 2013 impacted coastlines up and down the East Coast.

No word yet on any possible damage caused by the incident. It also wasn’t immediately clear if the event could have impacted the shoreline in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where a Delaware man was bitten by a shark around the same time.

A brush fire that started in the range area of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst led to the evacuation of homes in Pemberton Township’s Browns Mills community Wednesday afternoon.

The fire started on the ranges of Joint Base MDL and spread to the Browns Mills area off Pemberton Browns Mills Road. Officials evacuated a small number of isolated homes in the area as a precaution.

“Although the fire is still on the MDL range area, the decision to evacuate the homes was a precautionary measure taken by officials to ensure the safety of everyone in the area,” a spokesperson for the base wrote. “Joint Base officials are currently working closely with the New Jersey State Forest Service and the Burlington County Fire Department to contain and extinguish the fire.”

As of 6:30 p.m., officials had an estimated 25 percent containment on 40 acres. No injuries have been reported and so far there are no reports of structural damage. Pemberton, Browns Mills and Livingston roads are all closed as firefighters continue to fight the flames.

The first case of the Zika Virus in Chester County was confirmed on Tuesday.

The Chester County Health Department released a statement notifiying residents of the case, involving a woman who had recently traveled to an area affected by mosquitos that carry the virus. The woman was not hospitalized and has since recovered.

An alert was issued to all county heath care providers to remind them of the importance of following the testing and risk reduction guidance. Chester County Health Department Director, Jeanne Casner, reminds citizens that chances of contracting Zika in Chester County is minimal.

Zika Virus is mainly transmitted though the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, which are found primarily in warmer climates. The virus poses a larger risk to pregnant women, as the virus is shown to have a connection to birth defects.

To date, 23 cases of travel-associated Zika cases have been confirmed in Pennsylvania, but the health department said no locally-acquired cases.

For more information on the Zika Virus, residents can visit the Chester County Health Department website or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website.

Man Charged in Woman's Fatal Overdose: Officials

A Philadelphia man was arrested after he allegedly sold drugs to a woman that led to her fatal overdose.

Harold Burton, 36, was arrested and charged with drug delivery resulting in death. Police say Burton received drug-related text messages from Renee Winslow of Pottstown back on January 28. Burton then allegedly told her he would deliver four bags of heroin to her apartment on High Street.

Surveillance video showed Burton entering and leaving Winslow’s apartment, officials said.  Winslow was found dead inside her apartment the next morning.
The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office determined Winslow died from a fentanyl overdose. Investigators say drug baggies recovered near Winslow’s body all contained the synthetic opioid, which officials describe as “40 to 50 times more deadly than street-level heroin.”

“Fentanyl is killing people,” said Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele. “Addicts do not know that what they are injecting is the much more powerful fentanyl since it looks practically identical to heroin. But when it hits their system, the fentanyl shuts down their body, and they die."

"If we continue at this pace, we’re going to have one of the deadliest years for overdose deaths. We have to get the word out about fentanyl. This stuff is deadly for addicts, could be deadly for law enforcement and deadly for their K-9 partners. This is poison.”

In addition to drug delivery resulting in death, Burton is also charged with manufacture, delivery or possession of controlled substances and criminal use of communications.

“Renee Winslow’s death was not attributable to a violent crime,” Steele said. “This death is attributable to someone poisoning her, poisoning her with this very deadly drug fentanyl. Drug dealers beware – you give a drug to someone and they die, you are on the hook for Drug Delivery Resulting in Death.”

Burton was arraigned Tuesday with bail set at $1 million. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 6.

NBC10 explored the tragic world of heroin and opioid addiction earlier this year in a special investigation, Generation Addicted. The in-depth project highlighted people suffering to break free from the drug's strong and deadly grip as well as explore efforts by public health officials and law enforcement to address the growing epidemic.

Local Democrats Take Part in Gun Control Sit-In

Two local congressmen who are taking part in a sit-in on the House floor are speaking out about the protest and continued push for gun control in the wake of last week's mass shooting in Orlando.

Rep. Bob Brady of Pennsylvania and Rep. Donald Norcross of New Jersey are among the 168 House Democrats who sat down and “occupied” the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday. The democrats are demanding a vote on measures to expand background checks and block gun purchases by suspected terrorists. The lawmakers chanted, “No bill, no break,” and called on speaker Paul Ryan to keep the House in session through a scheduled recess next week to debate and vote on gun legislation.

The protest is being staged in the wake of a shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando that led to the deaths of 49 people. On Monday four gun control measures were voted down in the Senate on largely party line votes.

“Here we are waking up this morning and obviously having been back in the district the last few days and listening to our constituents who are absolutely outraged over the lack of progress in congress, particularly after the murders in Orlando,” Congressman Norcross told NBC10. “They just can’t understand why we can’t get something done.”

The protest is being led by Rep. John Lewis of Georgia who was also a prominent figure during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.

“A group of individuals very simply got together to say enough is enough,” said Norcross. “We’re going to try to force this vote and this is where we are today.”

Norcross described the type of measures the House Democrats wanted to enforce.

“There are 32,000 people a year who are killed by guns in this country,” he said. “Unacceptable by any measure. If you’re on a terrorist watch list you should not be allowed to purchase a gun.”

“Simple background checks to make sure that those people who are convicted felons or have other criminal backgrounds aren’t allowed to buy guns. That’s a success but this is just a step in the direction of making sure we cut down on those 32,000 people a year who are being butchered.”

Congressman Brady said they’re not pushing to take away weapons from responsible gun owners but simply want more extensive background checks.

“We’re not trying to take anybody’s gun away,” Brady said. “Just an extensive background check. People have been killed and what do we do? A moment of silence? That’s not good enough. We can’t keep telling people that we can’t try to do something to control this gun violence and when it happens we’re going to give you a moment of silence. We’re just asking for some more.”

Brady urged Republican lawmakers to help them in pushing for the gun control measures.

“It’s a Republican bill,” Brady said. “Put it on the floor and let’s put a vote on it. Let’s see what happens. They don’t have the conscience to vote? I’m sure the Republicans have the conscience to take the NRA money! Let’s put a vote on the floor. That’s all we’re asking for.”

Brady said the protest will continue until they see some type of action.

“I don’t know what they’re going to do or what they can do but whatever it is, we’re committed to staying on the floor until we get some kind of bill or some kind of commitment to put on the bill on the floor that we can vote on," he said.

Man Receives New Prosthetic Leg After Theft

A local prosthetic company is helping out a Philadelphia father of six after his prosthetic leg was stolen earlier this month.

Michael Stauffer, 45, had his leg amputated after he suffered a bone infection that required 29 surgeries. Six months ago however, his insurance paid for a titanium leg, provided by Lawall Prosthetic & Orthotic Services, that allowed him to comfortably move around.

On June 7 at 2:30 p.m., someone stole the leg when it was inside a moving van that was parked in front of Stauffer’s house on the 4000 block of Shelmire Avenue in the Mayfair section of the city.

“I had it all in a duffel bag and it’s the leg, the socket, the sleeve and all the screws,” Stauffer said. “How can you do that to somebody that’s disabled? One leg?”

Stauffer was forced to move on his knees in order to get around.

“I just don’t like getting around like this,” Stauffer said. “This is pretty much embarrassing.”

Stauffer told NBC10 his insurance wouldn't pay for a replacement for the expensive prosthetic which is worth $28,000.

After viewing our initial story last week, Jack Lawall of Lawall Prosthetic, decided to help Stauffer out once again and get him a new leg.

"I just thought that people do not realize when they take something from somebody how traumatic it can be," Lawall said. "Like an artificial leg. This man has six kids. He has to get up and chase his kids around without a leg. They don't understand."

Stauffer was fitted on Wednesday and is set to receive the new prosthetic leg Thursday.

"They tried to stop me but they didn't," Stauffer said. "What they're doing right now, I'm very pleased. I'm very happy and I can't thank them enough."

Police continue to search for the person who stole Stauffer's first prosthetic leg. If you have any information on the incident, please call Philadelphia Police.

After a sunny Wednesday the stormy weather is set to return Thursday.

The heavy rain will move in mainly south of the Philadelphia area during the morning commute. While there could be a break during most of the day, models are showing another round of storms between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.

“Models are struggling on the placement of this area of storms,” said NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Sheena Parveen. “So we’ll have to watch for that update through the morning once that area forms. It’ll be moving in from the Great Lakes region.”

Some of Thursday’s storms could be severe with the main threats being damaging winds, lightning, heavy rain and possibly hail. Temperatures will also be in the low 80s for most of the area.

Once the rain moves out, we’re in for lovely weather again with a sunny and dry Friday with highs in the mid-80s. Temperatures will rise over the weekend with highs in the 90s and sunny and dry conditions once again.

A young black bear chased by police in New Jersey on Wednesday ran up a tree and lingered there before being safely tranquilized and captured by wildlife officials.

Authorities said the 119-pound male yearling had an injured leg and is believed to have been hit by a car several days ago in Saddle River.

The bruin has been spotted in several neighborhoods recently and may have been fed by humans, NorthJersey.com reports.

Police in Washington Township got a call about the injured bear Wednesday and chased it into Paramus, where it ran across a backyard and climbed up a tree, authorities said.

Video shows the bear hanging out on some branches, looking down at the people surrounding the tree, its tongue lolling out of its mouth.

The bear is expected to recover and be released into the wild at some point.

A Target store in New Jersey was evacuated Wednesday evening as police investigated a report of a suspicious package.

A shopper at the Target in Edgewater, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, tweeted NBC 4 New York to report police "just kicked all of us out and won't explain reason."

A photo showed Edgewater police vehicles stationed outside the store, and the entrance taped off.

Edgewater police later said employees called 911 after spotting a box near the security vestibule at the store.

Bergen County bomb squad and Edgewater police responded and found the box empty. They determined the store was safe and cleared it for customers to return.

Calls to the store were not answered.
